  • I have a question. This style of squatting is very hip and adductor dominant and I feel it has caused me to lose out on quadricep stimulation, particularly the vastus medialis. The issue is, since most explosive sports like rugby, basketball, etc require the knees to track over the feet and shins to move forward instead of "sitting back", shouldn't this style be alternated with the olympic style squat for equal quad and hip development and better carryover to explosive sport?

  • @BentropySS I dont think so. I am a collegiate long jumper, and my coach is extremely educated in athletics and he always says to sit back into the squat and has us box squat to get the form down first. I personally agree with this method because you still hit the quads hard and really any more pressure on the knees will just hurt you. The hips and butt are absolutely vital for explosiveness, which this style helps target

  • Great vid, very helpful

  • dam i did know half this shit iam learning it now :)

  • Already I'm seeing things that may have contributed to my back problems. For instance I would take the bar from the rack with split legs instead of having the legs even and put it back same way. I'm thinking that had I known the things I'm learning here I would never have needed to go under the knife, and even then still have tweaks and such years later. I hate having to waddle like a pregnant women for 2 weeks or so while I'm recovering.

  • You're talking about pressing out in order to use more muscles which makes sense. What I want to know is how your hips are affected?

It feels like a wider stance is better for lifting with a squat suit because it spreads out the force and is a little better for your hips.

Are your hips in any danger when lifting with a wide stance? If so, what to do to make them stronger and more durable?

Love the clips and elitefts.com !

  • why do powerlifters all have that 'look'

  • @alehax27

Cause thats what a strong man looks like. Body builders are not in comparision

  • @alehax27 Because they only care about strength and numbers. They eat big and everything but they will never go on a "cut" to lose body fat. They dont care because thats not their thing. I think most of it comes from the diet though.

  • @alehax27 Because they lift and eat for performance, not for aesthetics.

  • Nice tips!

  • Is this the black sweatshirt and shirt gym?

  • front squat next!

  • why is it, that rippetoe teaches somehow the complete different? head down, don't sit back, knees forward and so on

  • @pitkobj rippetoe is very good at writing books, but his live tutoring skills suck. He has no proven time "under the bar". Essentially he is really book smart.

  • @shawn06m1

    fail on all parts.

  • @hybridman It's ok, you'll get there one day.

  • @shawn06m1 Do you know anything about Rippetoe? Besides, many of the bets coaches in the world were never world class practitioners themselves

  • @vjohn82 Yes, I know about Rippetoe, he is a sub-par powerlifter and contributes to Crossfit injuries all over the world. I don't take advice from someone who isn't the best at something, and if you do I am sorry, I only strive to be better than the best. Like Dave Tate says "a good coach should make you better than he is", Rippetoe couldn't make me better than sub-par

  • The BEST squatting tutorial ever made. Thank you so much. Can you also do a video on how to do a hack squat?

  • When you say "Tighten Abs" does that mean flex ur abs? I understand everything besides that.

    thanks

  • @SvpremeProtein no it means to tighten your anus

  • @SvpremeProtein imagine someone is going to hit you on stomach and you put all your power in your stomach to defend it this what he is meaning tighten abs = squeeze your abs

  • great video, Matt! Very helpful...

  • great video Matt! Very instructive

  • good instructor, would love to train w/ this guy.

  • Amazing vid how you guys do so you think you can deadlift.

  • amazing teacher!

  • This guy is a great teacher. Helped me incredibly!

  • Great stuff once again!

    Looking forward to next part!

  • How come olympic lifters do NOT lift like this and still squat insane weights?

  • @ofnair I think once you gain enough strength the form changes, this video is for beginners.

  • come on guys its been almost a month, you have the series filmed, put it up already

  • are you guys ever planning on putting the rest of the series up lol?

  • Awesome video. Thanks so much. Need more of high quality teaching like this. Is there a third part? Thanks.

  • What I wouldn't give for this guy to train me. I can leg press an immense amount. Can't squat an anorexic cheerleader.

  • wheres pt33333333333333333333333333

  • awesome video. is there no third part?

  • best squat guide

  • So when can we be blessed with the rest of the videos? This can hardly be all of the videos in the squat series?

  • Excellent excellent

  • Awesome! Thank you!!!!!!

  • Excellent!! More please!!

  • Great info thanks....

  • at squat you pushing out only when you go down?or and when you go up?

  • @phleidhs yes as soon as you hit depth you push your knees out hard

  • great stuff thanks.

  • Thanks!

About the mirror... I agree completely but dislike the fact that so many gyms have mirrors right where squatting takes place

  • @saj3000 so far every gym I've been to and often use have mirrors infront of the squat racks

  • Great tips thanks a lot, cant wait squat again after watching!

  • Excellent !!

  • I have a question. I will begin with a quote "paralysis by over analysis"

In your experience when teaching people to squat or you yourself learning to squat had a problem with this? I mean where someone is about to squat, and they are going through the mental checklist you mention at 4:08, and during this checklist that the over thinking of it actually works to disrupt the actual learning of the form or the confidence to learn it. What do you do to fix this?

  • thanks for the video.very helpfull

  • Very informative. Keep it up!

  • Thanks guys! :)

  • Thanks! This series will help me immensely, even though my gym has a giant mirror in front of the squat rack. ಠ_ಠ

  • Really cool video. The "So You Think You Can" series is of great use to people who don't have the benefit of training with other knowledgeable guys. Wonderful contribution.

  • I realize I may get flamed for this, but can you guys also show an olympic style squat too? I want to train my power clean and part of that is the olympic squat which has a narrower stance than the powerlifting squat as far as I can tell (I cant fint a trainer around here whom can train the squat or any of the olympic lifts).

Also would you use box squats for training olympic squats?

  • Great video man, super informative, thank you! So thought you weren't allowed flipflops in the gym? haha, those Adidas memory foam flops are awesome!

    Thanks agian!

  • Is this for geared squating or just squating in general?

  • thankyou.

  • gold

  • this is gonna be good

  • Awesome..been waiting for this!!!! Excellent guys.

  • this is so good! thank you!

  • Thanks for the upload!!

  • thanks matt

  • You are a great teacher Matt!!

  • Great videos. It's nice to see things broken down like this; it helps develops cues to look for while lifting. Thanks guys.

  • You guys have the awesomest vids,I have have made the best progress in my lifts watching your vids. Thanks EFS.

  • Matt's awesome and a good teacher

  • I got a question. This is a high bar squat correct? It looks like the bar is on his traps.

  • i loved "so you think you can benc" and this kicks ass too!! keep it going like that. everybody can learn so much here...

    ok, i stop the ass-kissing now ;)

  • This is really good stuff! Very detailed and well explained! Cant wait for part 3!

  • Very informative. thanks

  • forgot to cover actual hand grip position. Limp noodle grip like he had is gonna let that bar roll forward when he comes down. Awesome video though.

  • Basic knowledge, but a lack thereof to most people. Nevertheless thanks for this amazing video and clear explanation and visuals for guidance. I was in the gym the other day teaching someone the same format. Then i look to the side of me and there is another guy beside me doing jumps squats with 315. I wonder where he'll end up soon.

  • awesome work bro - thanks much appreciated

  • great video!

  • perfect shoes to squat matt =)

  • very helpful thanks guys. These "so you think you can" series are also helpful to me in seeing how to better teach the the lifts. what cues work well, how to adress certain technique issues etc.

  • EFS RULES !!!!!!

  • Fantastic video, thanks

  • thank you

  • EFS you guys rock. And thank you Matt Wenning for taking the time to do this.
