Even if a game is in a beta, it's considered finished enough so that the game experience doesn't differ that much from the finished product. In the alpha stage, that's when the game either gets scrapped or changed in big ways, that change the release date. That's why Minecraft most likely wasn't nominated this year. Beta is usually just bugs to fix and small features to add, while alpha might be anything from a tech demo, to a barely playable game.
