Damn this video is a great one. I saw one with Roth a while back with his older Vegas clothes and most of the time he was watching Eddie play. Roth sang but he watched Eddie do his stuff and Roth kinda just pranced around. I just wasn't feelin' it, even though I know Roth is coming back or is back. His older singles are great, Panama, Jump.etc. Sammy Haggar does well here and Eddie is smiling and playing awesome. Mike sounds great and Alex 2. Good shit!
I was there! A couple friends and I setup about 10 feet from the stage 5 hours before the show. When Ed's guitar tech came out, all the thousands of fans pushed forward. I was literally swept off my feet. Scary as hell. But the show was friggin' awesome!
I remember taking my walkman to econ class at UNT. Red beard of Q102 announced the show, and I spread the word through the class. Literally 3/4 of the class walked out. Those were the days!
West End Market Place, Dallas....I keep looking for me in this vid.. haven't found me yet. great show. I took off work to do it. I also went to the TX Jam where Sammys voice went south and he promised another show for free. This was it...
I remember when this video debuted on CBS, I saw my first VH concert shortly thereafter in Sacramento, got kicked out of the house for watching "devil music," never spoke to my parents again since... and I don't regret it one bit!! Long live rock and roll!!!!
I was a video production intern at this concert, so I got to see the guys up close and back stage, the crown was a little scary, the barricade was all iron in front of the stage and I watched people getting crushed right in front of me. As thanks for helping out I got a copy of the music video on VHS , I still have it and it sits on the shelf right behind me as I type this. I can't believe that was 20 yrs ago. Wow, where does the time go?
@edbigtruck I know, on the reunion tour with Roth, they didn't even play songs from the Sammy era. Not that it would sound good anyway because no way could DLR sing any of those songs. But it's like the years with Sammy never happened.
@tk2aero Well the hell with them Sammy made some great music with them. The only reason Roth is back is because Vanhalen had no one else to choose from and Roth had nothing going on.
Awesomeness! I always loved this underrated song & am glad to finally hear it done live. Sounds almost exactly like the studio version but that's a good thing in my book.
@LastDom '91 Dallas West End Marketplace. Hagar promised a free show when his voice went out the previous year. This is the payoff. Great fun but we got crushed.
I wish they listed who would look up a video like this, then dislike it. I'd track em down and kick their ass. I mean I understand if you don't like this genera of music but if you're gonna go out of your way to look something up, then dislike it...shit just change the video assholes
Just when you thought it couldn't get any better you later realize it did'nt! Then you feel sorry for those having to think lady ga ga and brity speers are good, yikes!
People bash Sammy, but just look at the energy, funs and just downright good time the band and crowd had at this free show, which incidentally was to make a promise on a show canceled three yrs prior.
Say what you want But the band kicked ass with Sammy in the band the music was great to bad Roth refuses to sing any of the songs they did with Sammy.
@edbigtruck Thats cuz roth cant sing......Now hagar sings old vanhalen songs and kicks ass while doing it.Makes me mad everytime I think about how great this band used to be,now they suck !!!
@rattlinurcage3 You are so right Eddie needs to get his head on strait and realise that Sammy At this time is way better then Roth. to bad they couldn't work things out and have Roth and Sammy and Mike all together with them.
@rattlinurcage3 Dude so what, every band get's old and sucks eventially. Christ, look at Puddle of Mudd, they suck now too.The glory of having a great album after great album does'nt last forever and eventially comes to an end. But hey look at it this way, it lasted 20 yrs for these guy's with 20+ big hit songs.
@emello4you Yeah but why should one of the greatest bands of all time go down in flames !! They know what worked and didnt work.....Oh well it is what it is,and I agree with ya about puddle of mudd...Great debut album and then a steady decline after that.
@rattlinurcage3 Well, I dont know if you know or not, but they are working on an album right now and plan of releasing it sometime this year. We'll just have to wait and see how it is.
Me and my friend Cyndi went to that show. We stood in front of the old spaghetti warehouse until the show started, and then we jumped in the crowd. In fact I think I see myself in the video near the end. Never forget that day, the radio station Q102 announced it one time at 3:00 in the morning and 250,000 showed up.
I was at this show too. at 2:03 minutes into this song to the left of Sammy you can see this girl on my shoulders . I never liked Van Hagar until this show . He was fearless climbing on the amps and stuff I had the best time. . and you can't tell but the crowd was loud when he asked us to sing we brought it , but for some reason you don't hear it on here. thanks for posting this i had to wake my kids up to show them it brought back some great memory's
Holy Crap I go down there all the time and never new about this. To bad I was only 4 or 5. That must have been fun. The Marketplace with the arcade, shops, bar and golf course and movie theater was probably open around that time, well closed while the band was there.
For the curious, center stage was approximately at 32.7830667, -096.8072417. The West End was a happening place 20 years ago. Now it's kind of a ghost town.
Wow! I was in seventh grade and skipped school to go to this concert/riot. I remember just kinda being moved around with no real control. At one point I got 15 feet from the stage right in front of E. I remembered it as they never finished. DPD shut them down. Crowd was out of control. I loved that band. Unfortunately, this tour is really when they reached their zenith. Think of everything that has happened since then. Drama, drama, drama. Will VH ever be like this again?
compare the intro of this to the audio from the rough footage of this show (also up on youtube) _ this is audio from a different live show, pasted on top of the texas footage. You can tell in the real audio, this was the last song of the show and Sammy's voice was wrecked by then
@OrganicAudioRecordrs Good call....I was just watching this thinking to myself...."Sam's voice was gone on the bootleg I have of this show....plus no crowd mics on my boot".....nice catch.
@OrganicAudioRecordrs Good call....I was just watching this thinking to myself...."Sam's voice was gone on the bootleg I have of this show....plus no crowd mics on my boot".....nice catch.
My dad told me about when Van Halen played a free show at Dallas, back in the early 90's. Then I was born in the same city, a couple years later. Fun fact: On the exact day I was born, Van Halen played a show in Salt Lake City, where we moved to a few years later.
I was at the original show when Sammy's voice was completely gone. They promised to come back when he was better and do a free show, so voila'. I'm farther back in the melee, just underneath the guys climbing the light pole.
I was there! That was an amazing experience. I remember watching the tour trucks coming in the night before and walking around in West End...what a feeling of anticipation. Front row baby! I'm probably in this video somewhere. ;)

I was there. It was AWESOME. The idiot at 1:49 of the video sitting on top of the streetlight fell off when the glass broke. He was about 20 feet from me and got JACKED up. Good times.

Live at the West End in Dallas Alley. I too remember!! You know West End used to be a kick ass place to hang out with friends go to the Texas/OU weekend bash and see concerts at the bomb factory but now I guess it in the time we live in it is against the law to have fun now.
Yeah , that shit was crazy I remember working all night then me and a friend heard it on Q102, VH was playing free at the West End. We blew a bowl on the way and had a good time.
this song is nostalgic. i used to listen to them pretty much everyday back in 9th grade. 4 years ago now im bout to go to college. so brings up all the memories of high school
Alittle more backround on this show. The last Texxas Jam VH played (87 i think) Sammys voice was pretty ruff, sounded fine to me,but he kept apologizing and promised VH would come back and play a free show.If I remember right it was at least a couple months later when a rumor started round Dallas that VH was going to play in Deep Ellum. The logistics didnt seem to fit so it wasnt taken too seriously. This show wasnt announced on radio until a few hours before the show and look at that crowd.
Just checkin out all the fans in thi clip..everyone looks like they are ON TOP OF THE WORLD!!!!...Van Halen are masters of FEEL GOOD songs...no wonder we all love em...Fuck YEAH..VH RULES
ok from his mouth he said he had this piece just about written at the time jump was recorded- the rest of the band thought it wasnt strong enough to put it on 1984 so he held on to it-here it is.
I just read an interview where Eddie says he actually does not like this song, but everyone else did. I say, keep writing these awful songs Eddie! We love you and your genius talent!
Eddie didnt steal he wrote it, its his to use however. the stones did it on flight 505. the satisfaction riff except on flight 505 its on piano, Its no big deal there both great tunes.
@ect5150 ed tagged that riff to the end of jump so It was trademarked , that way he could use it later. I got the article where he talks about doing that.
Gene Simmons tried to cherry pick Eddie Van Halen from the band when the young band was just getting their legs under them. Van Halen was going to the top with or without Gene Simmons and whatever that piece of shit is on top of his head. You guys should read Dave's book.
Gene Simmons did have some involvement with Van Halen producing some demo tapes for them after seeing them play live. I have a copy of one of them somewhere around here.
In 1977 Gene Simmons, from Kiss, saw Van Halen at Gazzarri's and financed their second demo tape, flying the band to the Electric Lady Studios, New York City to record "House of Pain" and "Runnin' With the Devil". Eddie disliked the demo, because he was not using his own equipment and had to overdub guitar parts. Simmons wanted to change the band's name to "Daddy Longlegs" and had designed cover art but the band stuck with Van Halen. Simmons then opted out of further involvement.
He's right. Simmons did help the band with a demo tape that went nowhere. It wasn't until Ted Templeman and Mo Ostin (the head of warner brothers) saw them live that they got a record deal.
This a fabulous song with a legendary band & the phenomenal singer/performer that joined them, so many great songs, concerts. This song makes a great anthem for those needing something to give them the inspiration to achieve their dreams. Thanks Van Hagar and a big thank you to Gene Simmons, for discovering this band that is now one of the best ever!!
Those were some great days, indeed. Eddie on top of his game. Roth is back, and its really cool that Van Halen is back in the saddle. Ed is the greatest, but currently isn't up to his earlier standards. Just watch some of the current videos and compare to the older stuff. At any rate, Eddie redefined guitar playing more than anyone since Hendrix.
Yea, your're right but all problems they've had aside remember that they aren't getting any younger. If I was to make a bet even though I have no idea for sure just watching Ed's hands now I'd give arthritis a good chance in playing a part in his changes. He has been rough on his body over the years.
As you can tell, I definitely like Van/Hagar much better. I like his voice more, his showmanship and the hits they made as a band. I liked Van Halen when I was younger, but enjoyed them more in later years. Thanks for the great video...KZ
wow thanks for posting this. I saw them in 92' (could have been 93.. .I can't remember) at the Cow Palace san francisco, May 8. The whole gig was Gen-admission (!!!), we pushed our way up to the stage, I was ~25 feet from Ed the WHOLE NIGHT. Listening to his Peavey 5150 / Ernie Ball rig the whole time. Its safe to say the house PA was cranked, but I still could hear eds mic'd rig just a little... guitar-tone heaven!!!
r u kidding? his old marshalls were the real prize. his rig currently has way too much treble. if he would just go back to using the marshalls and his frankenstein guitar his tone would sound 100 times better.
Eddie should watch this to get inspired. Then, maybe we can hear something better than TATTOO TATTOO.

This show wasnt announced on radio until a few hours before the show and look at that crowd.

oops -also he said he threw it on the end of jump because he liked the riff.
devintacal 2 years ago
ok from his mouth he said he had this piece just about written at the time jump was recorded- the rest of the band thought it wasnt strong enough to put it on 1984 so he held on to it-here it is.
devintacal 2 years ago
I just read an interview where Eddie says he actually does not like this song, but everyone else did. I say, keep writing these awful songs Eddie! We love you and your genius talent!
mountainDreamer 2 years ago 2
yeah genius is the key word there- im looking forward to the next to the next recordings-hes a different dude now but the talent is still there

sgdlevh5150 2 years ago
it was an interview posted on AOL a few weeks back. Sorry dont have a link to it....although you might try searching you tube. ;-)
mountainDreamer 2 years ago
Eddie didnt steal he wrote it, its his to use however. the stones did it on flight 505. the satisfaction riff except on flight 505 its on piano, Its no big deal there both great tunes.
mattschabe 2 years ago
Eddie stole the starting guitar riff of this piece from the ending riff of his own song Panama ;-)
janecroft 2 years ago
Stole it from "Jump" actually...
ect5150 2 years ago 8
@ect5150 ed tagged that riff to the end of jump so It was trademarked , that way he could use it later. I got the article where he talks about doing that.
BioMess 1 year ago
ya and if you buy the album best of both worlds they put them back to back so you can hear the similarity
Jayd0wg319 2 years ago
How much of a genius must one be to be forced to steal one's own music?
One has to be like EVH!!!

I guess it's just two hands, dexterity and a quick release brain fire. I don't know how you do that. It's pretty cool to watch it executed.

Gene Simmons tried to cherry pick Eddie Van Halen from the band when the young band was just getting their legs under them. Van Halen was going to the top with or without Gene Simmons and whatever that piece of shit is on top of his head. You guys should read Dave's book.
zulubobo 3 years ago
I hear that's a good read for those interested in the band (although I have not read it myself).
ect5150 3 years ago
Gene Simmons?!! Learn your history of this band.
zulubobo 3 years ago
Gene Simmons did have some involvement with Van Halen producing some demo tapes for them after seeing them play live. I have a copy of one of them somewhere around here.
ect5150 3 years ago
In 1977 Gene Simmons, from Kiss, saw Van Halen at Gazzarri's and financed their second demo tape, flying the band to the Electric Lady Studios, New York City to record "House of Pain" and "Runnin' With the Devil". Eddie disliked the demo, because he was not using his own equipment and had to overdub guitar parts. Simmons wanted to change the band's name to "Daddy Longlegs" and had designed cover art but the band stuck with Van Halen. Simmons then opted out of further involvement.
jnig666 3 years ago

Saw them with both Roth and Hagar and thought they were both great but Hagar was better.
fins142 3 years ago
Those were some great days, indeed. Eddie on top of his game. Roth is back, and its really cool that Van Halen is back in the saddle. Ed is the greatest, but currently isn't up to his earlier standards. Just watch some of the current videos and compare to the older stuff. At any rate, Eddie redefined guitar playing more than anyone since Hendrix.
thoughtstreams777 3 years ago
Yea, your're right but all problems they've had aside remember that they aren't getting any younger. If I was to make a bet even though I have no idea for sure just watching Ed's hands now I'd give arthritis a good chance in playing a part in his changes. He has been rough on his body over the years.
wiljasele 3 years ago
As you can tell, I definitely like Van/Hagar much better. I like his voice more, his showmanship and the hits they made as a band. I liked Van Halen when I was younger, but enjoyed them more in later years. Thanks for the great video...KZ

Markii30SA 3 years ago
wow thanks for posting this.
MuvoTX 3 years ago
r u kidding? his old marshalls were the real prize. his rig currently has way too much treble. if he would just go back to using the marshalls and his frankenstein guitar his tone would sound 100 times better.
