I loved this movie. Russell's character, trained from birth to be only obedient, has to deal with foreign emotions--without direction--as he is first rejected and cast aside as irrelevant despite the fact he hasn't changed. He's still fit, still obedient.
Then he has to assimilate into a society that doesn't understand him or know what to do with him, and he doesn't understand the feelings their rejection has provoked. Russell doesn't talk much but speaks volumes. Great movie. Great acting.
Is it just me, or does this trailer give off the wrong vibe towards what the movie was really about? I saw this trailer (after already seeing the movie) and it almost felt like a trailer for a different movie.
well, this trailer doesn't bring the glory and the sharpness of the movie, the movie itself is brilliant, well played and nicely scripted. I like it, have it in my collection, I am a fan of movies about soldiers, not war, not the equipment but the mental point of view of a soldier, this movie has that and I love it for that, "But there is one thing that will never change": "politics talk, soldiers die..."
Great movie, what I didn't realize until watching it recently is that it's about post-traumatic stress disorder, the difficulty soldiers have with re-integrating with society, and how society treats their soldiers with disdain until they are needed. These themes were probably completely lost on the 1998 audience.
I think I got this for about 3 quid on VHS when I was 15, and I still felt cheated. And yes, Pal W.S. Anderson is allergic to success. He takes concepts that could be mind blowing and curns out something that's thoroughly terrible. Case in point Alien vs Predator, the movie geeks had been waiting twenty years for, what comes out is a 90 minute 15s rated yawn. Another; Underworld: Vampires vs Werewolves & Kate beckinsale in skintight leather, instead we get ~ 2 hours of depressing muddled story
Supposedly, this movie is supposed to take place in the same setting as Blade Runner, just much earlier. The space battle at the beginning of the trailer is the Battle at the Tannhauser Gate.
i remember watching a movie like this when i was young just found it now i hope this is it! i know it is lol well kurt russell was in it and when he was a good he had to go through intensive physical training to be a human weapon, then he escapes lol i just explained the trailer...
Ive read that this film is the "sidequel"/spiritual successor to Blade Runner. There's ment to be Tannhäuser Gate briefly visible as said by Roy Batty and the end of Blade Runner. As Todd has ment to of fought there.
We justify weapons, man or machine, until they become the enemy or fall into the hands of an enemy. The movie holds far more substance if you pay attention. Look at Behind Blue Eyes Soldier and see what two works of creativity do together even though they were never intended to substantiate each other.
God, I loved this movie, last of its kind old-school action shoot em up plus effective parallel on human emotion. too bad it didnt do well, this is one of my favorites
I don't understand how high-profile scripts can be rejected or altered all-together. Warner Bros. gave this Peoples script to Paul Anderson and Jerry Weintraub (The Avengers movie). Why? It could've been a thoughtful movie like Blade Runner.
alex, the reason this film was given to anderson is simple, favors. Favors count for everything in hollywood even when the studio heads that the wrong director coul sin the ship.
@jaymitch23 Just because a person writes something that someone else believes does not mean that the writer believes it. Think of all the books that include racial slurs for the sake of historical accuracy. Does that make the authors racist? You are an absolute idiot if you say yes.
@Beardie22 This was not about the movie, it was about his comment HazMatMedia made, that's why I dislike youtube sometimes, because people fail to think before they speak.
I assure you, it was not a comment I made before thinking. Its the 'Mathematics of Defeat' so loved by the military-political establishment. Generals and Congressmen have an easier time sending some poor kid from LA or Selma to die in some shithole then risking their million dollar toys. Doesn't mean I like it. At all.
@pitviper71 I hear the same thing being said about Starship Troopers (1997), however for this movie, op makes a solid argument with "Nukes are expensive. Troopers are cheap". Remember that this takes place in a dystopia where the earth is overpopulated and pulluted. Sending peaple to their deaths is not a big deal for that kind of gouvernment.
Suspension of disbelief. But plot-wise, the planet's people couldn't really pose a threat to the plans; the planet was needed. And it's always cleaner to kill with bullets than with nukes. At the end of the day, if you can keep the buildings intact and just drop some people there to keep them, all the better.
Popped in to see the "Tannhäuser Gate" - visible only in the trailer. A "huge wall of metal; an impregnable fortress bristling with futuristic weapons", apparently.
(TG quoted originally in Roy Batty's checking-out soliloquy.)
soldier is one of my favorite movies, although only russel said as 79 words, I love your interpretation! for me this film has a 10, is entertaining, good action, good visual for us girls (kurt's blue eyes are irresistible), a lot of blood and feeling. I love it!
i like this movie i think its good it has good acting(kurt russell could of had more lines but o well) and good action(witch is what i watched it for) but it could of had a better story line
that space battle at 30 seconds in is totally not in the film and that first clip of dead guy in space is that event horizon or sumthing, cos i know this film was made just after event horizon so it would give Kurt russel time to buff up.
