@tpstrat14 Gold leaf weighs almost nothing. It's only about 1000 molecules thick... millionths of an inch. Those scrapings were only worth a few cents, if that.
I do gilding with calligraphy, and the best, least expensive supplier of gold and other metal leaf I know of is called Art Essentials in New York City. I bought 40 books of gold for about $750 four years ago.

That is fascinating. I wonder if gum arabic is/was also used for applying gold leaf on other surfaces like stucco ornamentation, picture frames, etc.
