  • 1:48 double doses chip in his verses? huh?

  • to catz that dont understand music cant understand quest........meth siad no cause he wanted the show the highlight and of course as close to the record as it could be. ITS MONEY! A-yo is a type of beat that totally fits in to a live band! and i can tell you.....They would have taken all the show with that.... Meth and red is jus to highlight money junkie nowdayz. they cant swallow that they are not the number ones on the chart. its straight business... money...thats all....!

  • meth said he dont rock with bands it muffles his voice, plus they were trying to promote the song so they wanted it as close to the record sound as possible

  • love the roots but folks out to be more like 1994

  • Method Man and Redman feel they represent their music they are selling better with a DJ. They like to keep it simple and straight hip hop.The Roots are great, but Questlove sounds a little up himself here and needs to stop bitching and respect people's creative decisions.

  • ?uestlove's hair is one of the most fascinating things I've ever seen.

  • All i wanna say is...PETE ROCK made the beat. Doesnt he deserve to get some damn shine for producing a hit record? So you want Red & Meth to snub the producer of the song, so they can let you guys try to emulate the song? Pete Rock needs to eat too Quest. Stop whining! Still got love for you tho PEACE

  • ?uestlove looks vulnerable here.

Not what I expected. But then again I don't know much about ?uestlove. Love this guy. I'll rap for you!

  • ?uestlove is butthurt.

  • man...why is dude trippin?? thats his ego speakin.....not everybody wants to rock with a live band......maybe they got their own set all planned out with their dj........ Roots are the shit, but some peps want to hear the beat like it was produced, not a live version..... ?uest needs to stp dickriding himself and let niggas do what they wannna do...its their career, not his...smh

  • @626SupremeLogic You right about that. Dude is complaining because he didn't want to give him burn? C'mon son, FOHWTBS. Meth tryin to get people to hear the SONG, not a live COVER. It's a sharp difference.

  • @Jajais4u feel u player....roots are the shit though.. Black Thought is mad underrated

  • Ha Right! True Some Rappers are Trapped in a Frame of Fear!

  • "whats he think, I'm gonna make it sound like american idol or something??"

    hahaha classic shit

    hip hop genius right there.

mad respect for method and red too, shame a few heavyweights couldn't lay it down together.

  • Haha, ?uestlove look so high

  • The Roots is legendary and Meth/ Red are also heavyweight legends from the golden era of real hip hop still carrying the torch today! Wow. Much respect for both crews forever and ever!!

  • he said "I could see Conway Twitty or Steven Bishop being like 'nah, we'll do our own beat."

    lol

  • The roots bang anytime live....

  • live instruments and hip hop don't mix to me.

  • @groalerable have you seen the roots live? its wild.....

  • @mikkyochimp well yea they're good for thier own shit but sometimes it's not right, like the video of lose yourself at the grammy's- that sounded bad. and when jay z does dead presidents now with a real piano it sounds whack

  • @groalerable

then you've never heard the roots preform with rappers.

  • so what? move on..don't dwell, love. Don't be negative. Its too small of a hip hop world to keep the division. One Love, it's all hip-hop

  • Redman trippin...

  • never heard a black man say "stellar".

  • @RyanSk8r99 that mean ?uest is one of the small percentage of black people who speak with proper grammar

  • @RyanSk8r99 hilarious

  • You do realize we're talking about Meth and Red, right? Chances are that whenever they were proposed the idea of playing with the Roots, both of those dudes were stoned out of their minds, writing rhymes about sliding up into a Portugese Princess, lol. You have to learn not to take those guys seriously lol. Anyways, The Roots are legendary and Red & Meth are legendary, hopefully a collabo can come soon...

  • "I dont want it to be pick on methodman week... joe budden is allready in the lead" lol

  • @BizDaExecutioner I actually do not like the roots at all. I just like ?uestlove

  • @BizDaExecutioner Yes it does say alot about The Roots. For Meth to use him for so long and then all of the sudden decide "Nah nvm" is fucked up. The Roots got popular because of member like Questlove. Coming from another professional musician, I would be upset too. So until you get in HIS shoes, I don't wanna hear it fag.

  • A live band makes everybody sound better. Screw a lone DJ (backing track).

  • Maybe they liked thier dj and had good chemistry? i lik ethe roots but its wierd that he get cranky when someone dosnt wanna play with him. Plus he say wheres the love? maybe he got ove for his dj?

  • at 1:10 what did the jew say? "Red Mether Gray?"

  • @OriginalSituation calling him a jew was really fucking unnecessary. Troll.

  • @OriginalSituation red and meth are great

  • @3dakainsane thanks, that makes more sense ^_^

  • ?uest gets it in....it would of been nice to see them back Meth and Red...sometimes middlemen get involved and screw a good thing bad

  • It seems a lot of people commenting especially "The Roots" fans seem to be more fans of the music, and instrumentation and live band aspect, they obviously can't relate to being a Hip Hop Emcee/Lyricist/Rapper whatever you wanna call it. At the end of the day ?uest is a dope drummer. Method is a true emcee. In my personal opinion the Wu style sounds whack with live instruments, I want that gritty high pitched staticky turnatable scratching raw shit!

  • @fernandoiscrazy

I disagree. Rapping is just as much an essence of the roots as the live instrumentation. Black Thought is one of the best and most underrated MC's in the game.

  • ?uestlove looks like Mr. T in his younger days, minus the Mohawk.

  • This dude is over the top

  • As an artist you evolve, all hip hop is samples from live instruments and Meth has been doing this a long time by now if he cant perform to a live band like ROOTS especially like ROOTS its a shame. I get on Jay Z's case a lot because of his music sometimes but give him credit he rocked out to a rock band, btw my beef with Jay Z is I think because he doesnt write his lyrics down his music is all over the place sometimes good sometimes not so much.

  • I think that stupid redman changed method man!! meth..back to old school !

  • he wants to keep to the original sound of the song which hes trying to promote what the fucks wrong with that?

  • Some Mc's have a hard time rapping to a live band cause they are used to the absolutley perfect timing of the programmed drum beat.

This could maybe have been the case as well they just use the excuse of wanted to keep it close to the album versions. I have seen it first hand. As soon as the drummer drops the beat even a teeny bit ( and human drummers always do, their timing is not computer perfect) The Mc loses his phrasing and fucks up the timing of his rap.

  • In defence of Meth maybe he's not used to being backed by a live band or maybe he has and had a bad experience. No doubt The Roots are a tight band I've seen them live and they put on a great show but if that's how Meth wanted it then so be it. I don't think it's fair to insult the MC with just a DJ format that's how Hip Hop started.

  • It's unbelievable that there are people out there who can say Rappers Delight used a sample of Chic when all you gots to do is LISTEN to the 2 tunes, available at the click of a mouse. All this bickering - let's have some Hip-Hop unity people. Who cares about 1 little show, this is WORLDWIDE, go find out.

  • The Roots band could bring sooo much to any song. Meth & Red's loss really.

  • Its obvious that ?uestlove feels insulted by Meths decision.

  • so is there any respond from meth or red about this?

  • I would give my life to rock with The Legendary Roots Crew!!

  • i dont know i dont care whats going down if the roots wanta back me any day iam down.the roots are amazing.....

  • pretty obvious he wanted to do what he felt would make him shine more. dont take it personal

  • Don't kiss ass. No band can make beats sound better. I can see how Quest might feel that way. But no one can recreate a beat. Fuck a band. Remember These are the Breaks, Rappers Delight? We left bands in the80s because that was not what Hip-Hop is about. Argue all you want Roots or not they are not SP 1200s or MPC 60s. They can't do the same job. Hip-Hop music is big beats, not 10 piece orchestras.

    Koo-C, S.F. U.Z.N.

  • True but Jay-Z's band is fuckkkking MEAN. Plus its a different feel. Hip hop music is also about negging culture barriers 'n thangs, so I suppose it depends on the artist. Maybe he/she doesn't want to be alone on stage, maybe they get tired of hearing the same song and want a live interpolation? You gotta point though, youngin.

  • The Sugar Hill Gang didn't use a band to record Rapper's Delight. They used a sample from Chic's "Good Times." Most Hip Hop groups used samples back then. Samples, synthesized sounds (or "beats"), and studio musicians are no more important than the other. They're all different ways for the artist to achieve the sound they want. If Method didn't want to use a band, more power to him, but you don't have to slag ?uest (or any other live musician.)

  • It is a well known fact they uesed a live band for Rappers Delight. Dumb ass! Don't ever talk about Hip-Hop history to someone who knows it.

Sample tech was not even avalible unless you had about $5,000 for a frig size sampler. Back in 1979 the Suggar Hill Labe would not have enough for one @ that time. Watch your mouth when you talk to me!

    Koo-C

  • You don't know much do you? Positive Force is the in-house band credited with the music parts. Doug Wimbish, Skip McDonald and Keith Leblanc were also part of the in-house SugarHill musicians who played on "The Message" among others. And as far as "samples" go w/ "Rapper's Delight", there were no commercially available samplers around back then. The only "samplers' in the late 70's were multi-tape decks used by Chris Carter from Throbbing Gristle and The Cab V..

  • @Cryptographer12 You are wrong do you homework.

  • I would jam with them any chance I could, besides method man's career is not exactly stellar we now know he needs the cash to pay his taxes

  • Method man didnt want to jam with the roots? thats crazy its his call but a chance to jam with the best pure hip hop/rappers around would be to good an oppertunity to miss up.

  • red and meth should be honored to have a chance to rock with the legendary roots crew!! seen them 3 times in vegas and NOBODY puts it down live like the ROOTS!!!

  • i like roots music but he seem abit up his own ass.

  • well put. thats how i feel.

  • honestly i think this dude should stop crying its not up 2 him if meth didnt want him then thats it end of story meth said he didnt want 2 rock with them cause his voice gets drowned out his voice aint loud enough

  • Its always fly seeing multiple talents performing together... everybody has heard 'a-yo'.. why not spice it up with the Roots!

  • xtrawalk is clearly a douchebag. The Roots are the shit.

  • I don't recall your mom saying that when I sprayed her face!

  • your a fuckin tough guy, the roots are still the shit.

  • Shit is an adjective I would never use with my favorite group.....but that's a "Roots" fan for you!

  • Your so clever man, im just gonna admit defeat. I hope you enjoy being the coolest kid ever

  • oh shit! there's 8 year old in the housseee.

  • Oh shit!........There's an asshole who wants to crack jokes....but can't spell.

You're so stupid...you could throw a rock on the floor and miss.

    Beat it, douche nozzle!!!

  • I don't usually pick fights with strangers over youtube, so I'll make this quick. Firstly, don't criticize my spelling if you are going to punctuate incorrectly. "!...." is not a thing, and never will be. Maybe you got away with it on your To Kill a Mockingbird book report, but that's dumb luck kid Secondly, I didn't spell anything wrong, I spelled the word "house" phonetically. Advice; if you're trying to illustrate someone else's stupidity, do not use the dumbest sounding expression possible.

  • What the fuck is your malfunction....dick-nose???

You said there was an 8 year old in the house while omiting the word an.

    Case fucking closed...Ivy-leaguer!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fuck Method Man and Redman, I used to like them but fuck that shit

  • Because they didnt want the roots, you dont like them any more all it is is that they preferred a DJ ... no big issue. Why should he use him any way is it by force ... when method man said he didnt want rza to produce T2, JUDGEMENTDAY did you say you didnt like him no more ..rza is still cool with Meth ... no big deal ... why are the roots so upset are they looking for shows to get paid or what... im sure method man turning him down was not personal

  • fuck a dj i would have got down wit the roots u crazy??????

  • QUESTLOVE IS BOSS!

  • Can't go wrong wit the Roots or a DJ.

  • Be Easy Y'all He Aint Talkin Shit He's Just Disappointed. And He Aint Talkin To Meth So Meth Cant Give Him His Reason Personally. But I'm Sure They Both Got Madddddd Respect For Eachother

  • Play your position Questlove?.....not every dude wants a band...so musicians now want the work of the DJ? You play every weekday...live...so you can sit this out...Red and Mef need no co-stars!!

  • shut up!

  • I wish your bitch-ass would jump from behind the keyboard and step up so you can be seen.

  • be quiet!

  • Stop with your homo banter.....The Roots have never been relevant.

  • and you dont know shit bout music let alone hiphop dumb fuck!

  • Battle you anyday.......anytime!

    Can't fuck with my knowledge..kid!

Thought you knew.......but that's why I work in the biz......and you most likely do not!

  • stop frontin! talkin bout you wrk in the biz.....lmao! we can battle knowledge tho...get at me anytime that's real talk.

  • So you want to come to any one of a number of shows I work on per week?

Are you in the NYC area? Can I slap the shit out of you after you're proven wrong?

Do you want me to drop names like most chumps do?? Should I list my peeps who are on Amalgam Digital and Benchmark music? I'm not a fan...not a dick rider....and again...The Roots are irrelevant...why do you think they play for the "Jimmy Fallon"...because they were not profitable.....they couldn't even afford their instrument techs.

  • I'm in Los Angeles sorry but you and all your peeps can eat a bowl of dick! I could give a fuck who you know nigga your wrong and i'm right!!!!! ha ha ha ha!....lmao! LOL! punk!

  • Inviting another man to eat other men parts.......think you've been hanging with too many homos....clouds your thought paterns!!

How are you right? You got scientific evidence? Cause I personally know the techs that got layed off from the Roots....and by the way....NBC is not happy with the ratings....so the entire show might get canned.....not that you would or could know...cause...you're doing your fag thing.

  • they said that bout conan when he started mr. i know the techs! lol! ur a funny dude you aint gota front yo! keep it real sonny peace love and hiphop i ain't fuckin wit you anymore.......eat a bowl of dick bitch!

  • Says a lot about you...when you still......in ernest..must reply in a homo type fashion....so keep talking...you're slaying yourself........gaylord!

  • Well said .. why is he moaning is he an unemployed artist out of wrk or something they dont owe him anything.. red n mef jus like the whole dj b boy vybes for their show thats all.

    big up!!

  • why are you so butthurt quest?

  • That was lame of Method . The Roots is one of the greatest groups and I agree 100% even 500% with ?uest . I mean has any one heard Jay Z's MTV's Unplugged album it was The Roots backing him up the entire time, so on that note ENOUGH SAID .

  • i feel u, but u can't compare jay-z situation with meth/red's situation because jay-z was performing songs w/ the roots that people already know. now if meth and red was to do "how high" w/ the roots instead of "a yo" (a song that a lot of people STILL don't know about), then i would agree with you. like babybark2 said, if the roots could make it sound better than the original, the downside is that most people are gonna to expect how the roots did it instead of how it actually sounds.

  • just to make quest happy does Method man have to accept even though thats not what he wants but just to be polite he should say yes right!!!

He is just being true, do you think he went out of his way to hurt ques ... he hollard at Mef ... if Mef wanted him he would have used him time ago... Nothing Personal, im sure meth doe not think he is wack but thats not what he wants.

  • Lame because he didn't want a band? tell Quest to stop bitching

  • Cover your mouth with your hand

    2. Make a wish

    3.Close your hand (fist)

    4. Hold your hand at heart for 5 seconds

    5. Send this to 3 more videos

    6. Tommorrow will be the best day ever

  • I respect if meth and red dont want to have a band on their song, but I dont understand it. The Roots is an amazing live bang and kills it everytime they go on stage.

  • The funny shit to me is ?uest's disposition, like

"How Dare He!!!", I feel what Red & Meth were sayin regarding letting the public hear the song as is 1st. Let's imagine what ?uest said is true, they make it sound better than the original, the downside of that is people are gonna go out &cop & get disappointed it doesn't sound like they heard it on Fallon.

  • Forget that ish check out this dude

H2boss Don't Back Down dudes the next ish

  • Can someone please tell me what type of shoes are those in the top corner

  • ?uest is real cool, but stop crying..

  • I love The Roots, but ?uesto needs to fall back on this one. Where is it written that EVERY hip hop act that appears on Fallon MUST use The Roots as their band? Come on now... ?uest would never let another artist dictate how his music should sound... so why should Meth and Red let ?uest dictate how they should sound?

  • Excellent ... well said ... couldnt have put it better myself

I guess Meth should make quest happy by being polite saying yes and be upset with himself . knowing that having a band at this paticular time was not where he wanted to go.

    Well said fam!!

  • was that Asher Roth in the backdrop when you turned the cam to yourself @ Rosenberg??

I loved hiss performance with the roots..it was hot!

  • how lame. that is sooo '96 indeed. smh

  • smh ( sucking my hose ) ayo!! u know what artistic disposition is ?? the theme of the album was retro ?? two mics and a dj ?? u get how that works ?? mungkey

  • OHH BY THE WAY WISE ONE . THE ALBUM IS SUPPOSED TO BE RETRO . SUPPOSED TO BE 94 .THATS WHY THEY TOOK IT TO TWO MICS AND A DJ . FEAR ?? QUEST U SHOULD SIT UR NAPPY HEAD DOWN. AND PETER ROSENBURG BITCH !!! THEY HAD A DIRECTION FOR THE ALBUM AND GOING THE MAINSTREAM WAY OF USING UR BAND . (ITS MAINSTREAM EVERY FUCKWEED IS DOING IT ) DOESNT MAKE IT MORE OR LESS AUTHENTIC . these officianados need to SHUT THE FUCK UP ..

  • gr8 .. this is exactly what REDMAN SND NETH NEED . MORE B.S from guys who think theyre real hiphop .. HIP hop was here before 1978 .. its not urs or mine . sit ur ass down

  • I'd rather be back in 1994, musically. So being "very 1994" isn't an insult.

  • 5***

  • why didn't questlove ask why eminem didn't want the roots to back him up? i don't remember the roots backing up em when he did 'we made you' not so long ago

  • Comment removed

  • i remember them backing em up on some awards show. lose yourself

  • cause eminem sucks ass!

  • omg dramaz

  • Wow, so they wanted something different. Big deal. The Roots need to get over themselves, they got some egos.

  • Ah that sux! Why the fuck Meth is trippin. That would have been a great performance had Meth climbed off his high horse. I love both of these artists, but too bad they couldn't work on this one together.

  • this could have been another good look for hip-hop...just like when PE and Luda was there.

  • Nah, Stephen Bishop would welcome that ship. WELCOME THAT SHIP!!! Meth and Redman are mufalakas because of this. Radio single. Hell, I want The Roots to jam with Black Moth Super Rainbow, Sweetback (for the inevitable Maxwell appearance) and I also want saxophonist Tom Scott to jam with them for a performance of "Today". Make that ship happen, MAKE THAT SHIP HAPPEN!!!

  • You must be Johnbook lol.

YES on the Maxwell performance. Have they performed with any non hip-hop acts yet on the show?

  • Their performance they ended up doing was alright but I won't remember it tomorrow. I barely do now. Just like the all of the Hip Hop performers on LNWJF who aren't backed up by The Roots.

  • follow up on this pete!

  • fuck that bs! as a fan of both id wanna see them rock with the roots!

    roots are the best LIVE!

  • He didn't want to falsely advertise the song. It makes perfect sense. Why make the song sound different than it will when people actually pay money for it?

  • Ummm... C'mon... It'd have the same hook and it really wouldn't sound THAT much different. I seriously doubt someone opens their new brand new red & meth CD, pops it in the stereo, and goes:

"WTF HOW COME THIS DOESN'T HAVE GUITAR AND TUBA AND AND AND EXTRA PERCUSSION. FUCK METHOD MAN & REDMAN I WANT MY MONEY BACK"

    really? That'd be real dumb.

  • Man please, the Roots relevant. They are to people who love real hip hop

  • Comment removed

  • Meth is severely sleeping on ?uestlove. That's a real scaredy cat move on Meth's part.

  • So Meth has to be polite and say yes even if he does not want to because he didnt want a band!!!

  • I think they should look at the track record of the show's performers, The Roots backed Luda, Ross, Asher, and Public Enemy. That was all awesome.

This shit sucks, A-Yo is a great track and I can't imagine it being anything short of awesome with ?uesto and the Legendary putting work on it.

  • all due respect to The Roots and all live bands, but i PREFER when artists use their DJs. that's the proper way to do it

  • Sorry, at this point in Hip-Hop, only using a DJ for every performance is too limiting. So, there is no single "proper" way to do it when cats have been killing stages with the Roots for a decade now.

  • Comment removed

  • no need to apologize Bridge. De La Soul uses live bands, i've seen live bands w/artists i like do it well. but i'm cool with just the DJ cause i like that dynamic best. please note: i went to Temple Univ. in Philly during the 90s so i knew about Roots before rest of world did. peace!

  • But thats what red n Mef prefer

whats everyone problem why should they feel guilty for not saying to drugs like everyone else

  • Thats just real hip hop fam. the formula mic n decks

    well said!!

why are people against them for saying no to something they not 100% into

    Preferrence!!!
