You seem to fail to understand that Mark Hamill's performance was very subtle compared to Haydn's. It's like every other scene in the prequels we see what a whining little pansy Anakin was... But in the original trilogy Luke really doesn't whine that much, but even when he does, it is far more subtle, FAR more subdued than Hayden Christensen. There's also something else important contrasting the two performances. There IS a reason for Luke to whine because he has an actual burden on him.
Red Letter Media, those guys are geniuses. Those guys have analyzed the hell out of those prequels, so unfortunately for you sir, I'm afraid they know what they're talking about far better than you. Sure, their argument is an opinion too... but their opinion seems far more solidly based than your own. Believe me, I understand your desire to defend something you care about, but you need to try and look at the prequels from the opposite side of the fence.
Philosophy and Film majors could look at Sesame Street and claim it is inspired by ancient epic texts such as Beowulf or The Divine Comedy and say the creators were geniuses for coming up with it. In reality, Lucas had no idea about any of the references you claimed he did. I enjoy watching the prequels but there are flaws and plot holes. Even the original trilogy has its problems. But its great enjoyment.
Wait, you actually wrote all of your bullshit down on note cards? HA! I agree with the other posters. Red Letter Media has made a hell of a lot more than your three lame ass response videos, Mr. "I Go To Film School." Let me know when you've made something worth while and has more views than just ONE of Red Letter Media's videos.
I can’t believe that you didn’t learn in your “film school” that the script plays a big part in conveying the film. Attack of the Clones had terrible dialogue that not even the actors could save. James Dean’s performance compliments the well-written script for Rebel without a Cause, while Hayden Christensen’s performance reflects the terrible script.
Luke acted that way because he was anxious. The reason we hate the way Anakin was portrayed was that in A New Hope is because Obi-Wan spoke very highly of him and it made all the more shocking when we learned that he was Darth Vader. In the prequels, there are no scenes that made me think that he was “the best star pilot in the galaxy and a running warrior,” along with being “a good friend.”
Bravo! Love your video! Great insight. I am also in film school and appreciate all types of art. The world has become angry and hateful. No matter what Lucas does there are those that just spew negativity at anything he makes. YOU haters have destroyed your own childhood. Isn't that the way it goes now. Humans take a positive thing & mutate it into horrible negativity. It's just so sad to see my generation giving up their idealism & youth. Now it's all about complaining, stress & anger. How Sad.
He's a filmmaker best known and most popular for tearing down other peoples' work (Not only with STAR WARS but also STAR TREK, AVATER, etc), not actually for any of his own material which quite honestly isn't that grand from what I've seen. I'll be the first one to say his reviews were well thought out, executed, and at times even entertaining. But I watched them and didn't find them to be inarguable and Earth shattering. The opinion's fine of course, but it's been vastly overrated
Overrated in your opinion is something that other people like that you despise. Yes RLM are more known for there reviews, but have made dozens of short films as well as producing three feature films. The fact of the matter is that the retard in the video above hates RLM because they gave an honest, true, factual review of something he loves and tore it a new asshole. The Star Wars prequels are crap and if you think otherwise you are a total fucking idiot.
Wow, it almost took you a week to respond to me this time. Usually you guys are all over me within a matter of hours. And did you read my post, or better yet read it thoroughly before going on your moral tirade? I outright said I thought they were well put together and pretty entertaining to watch. I don't despise them, I just don't wholeheartedly agree with them. In the end, IT IS JUST A REVIEW. It's his fans who have become bullheaded elitists that bother me.
@SLPIFan I'd agree more with what RLM says about the prequels than the idiot in the video above whose just making crap up with no basis of fact. Anakin is supposed to be James Dean? Bullshit!
I think Lucas actually did say that in an interview somewhere around the time the film came out, and I don't think it's beyond the grasp of reason. That doesn't really change my view on Christensen's weak performance though, but I think it's obvious that that's what they were going for. This guy presents some interesting stuff that I don't think is particularly baseless, but he isn't really presenting it in the right way.
Your opinion is justified because you took some film classes at what is probably a third-rate junior college and read some books on mythology and philosophy? You're opinion of the so-called themes of the prequels is nothing more than an interpretation, not fact. Besides, there are many other films that hold the same themes and are much more engaging and well done than the sh*t that is the Star Wars prequels.
Another brainless Lucas-apologist moron trying to defend cinematic diarrhea. You are no different than the other whiny Star Wars geeks who go and make hour long rants about how stupid everyone is because they don't have the same opinion as you...
@nmoravec1 Whoa! Hold on a minute. Double Standard Alert!! You just called him stupid for not having the same opinion as you. Doesn't that make you a brainless geek? This is a great series of films. All six are worthy of the Star Wars name.
@THXLUH1976 Just because it's Star Wars does not mean its good. You prequel apologist have no real opinion. You think because it's Star Wars, you have to like it otherwise you're not a true fan. The prequels are complete crap. Horribly written, poorly acted, and too relient on CGI. If you morons looked at footage of how Lucas made these movies, how rushed the scripts were, and how he acted on set, I think you would open your eyes and stop being blind...
We're so glad you enjoy a saga that tells the story about an asshole kid that grows up to be a leader of an army for an evil galactic empire, and goes to Jedi-Heaven when he dies. Too bad a story like that can't bring out the inner child in all of us, but hey, I'll keep looking. Maybe I'll find one that does.
@NiteMovesyahoo and a farm boy that becomes a jedi from standing around in 2 years time that goes on to rule the jedi council and republic after hooking up with his sister makes more sense right? The OT encourages incest
@NitroSlol If you'll recall, Luke and Leia don't even know they are brother and sister until Return of the Jedi, but then you'll say "but Leia said somehow I've always known", but even then... EVEN THEN one kiss is a far cry from actual sex. And even then, that still does not condone the practice of incest. As Leia said at the end of ROTJ "It's not like that at all.. he's my brother"... END OF STORY, YOU FAIL.
Anakin never once showed another side of himself besides the whining self-centered punk. If he did, maybe I could believe he could turn from the darkside at the end of episode 6. Now what about the major inconsistency of having Padame die during childbirth? We have to assume the woman Leia thought was her real mom, was her step-mom. This makes Star Wars the most miserable saga I ever seen. At the end, Luke & Leia have no idea who their real mom is, but Vader gets to go to Jedi-Heaven.
I challenge any Star Wars prequels hater to give an educated opinion like this guy's. Based on facts and on research (and no, I don't count RLM reviews as a respectable source). I'm pretty sure the only thing I would get is some ass cursing me out and trying to bully me into hating the prequels, and that's why they'll never get my respect. Thank you for this response, and thank you for stating the truth: The prequels were part of the childhood of many, including me.
You are hateful! I don't care about CGI but i don't feel anything for the caracters in the prequels. I,ve got to say i am not a Star Wars fan, i just like to watch a good movie and the original Star Wars movies (and Indiana Jones movies) where masterpieces.
You know if you actually were calm, I MAY have taken your points seriously, but you come across as far more of a complainer and whiner than Hayden Christensen in either of those horrible prequel movies. People don't have to have the same opinion as you; the world ain't perfect buddy and neither is Star Wars.
@TheInstantClassic1 That's exactly how the fanboys are acting. Wake up and smell the deathsticks, there are more haters acting like this than the guys who like the prequels.
The Star Wars prequels were praised by the actual top critics like Roger Ebert (the best) and they made a shit load of money and they became the highlight of a new generations childhood. OH BUT WAIT! All the old Star Wars fans hated them and got like have the fan base to go with them. So they're like total failures! Who cares about critics, money and the other half of the fan base!
How many people do you know that like the teenager stereotype in all honesty? And people complain about Hayden being a whiny little bitch because if he was actually a good actor his whining or whatever would have actually been better.
@RPGgamerVII You do know he's a Golden Globe nominee right? And you do know that Mark Hamill and Carry Fisher were never considered even good. Especially Carrie Fisher. At least Mark Hamill became a descent voice actor. Just leave it alone man, let it go. The movies got great reviews by the actual top critics. Like Ebert and Roeper. If you don't like them it's okay, but common, stop ruining it for all the kids who grew up with them.
@RedDadaFilms Hey, I grew up with the prequels. I liked Revenge of the Sith to a certain extent. I'm willing to bet though that the reason Hayden was awful in the prequels was probably George's fault.
"Alright, Hayden, here's one of the most emotional lines in the movie. Say it monotone."
@RPGgamerVII Lol, I like your theory. But, I think he was like that because Jedi are supposed to sound kinda woody as you may have noticed by listening to Luke in 6, Darth Vader and Obi-Wan. I mean, I think it's because he was such a passionate character and so young that he sounded like that. I think the only thing about him the critics had an issue with was the dialog and it's been that way since the originals, so I've never had an issue with it. Plus, George is a 4 time Oscar nominee so...
@RPGgamerVII Plus, he's not that monotone. I that scene in episode II wasn't so monotone and if it seems that way to you, then I guess it's just his natural disposition.
@RedDadaFilms Eh, maybe so. It just seemed like some of his lines in Revenge of the Sith had no emotion. "You underestimate my power!" sounded kind of cheesy. More anger and yelling would have made that line a lot better. The only line that really sticks out for me in RotS is when he yells "I HATE YOU!" to Obi-Wan after he gets burned.
@RPGgamerVII Lol, ya, you know, as much as I appreciate all six films. There really are some lines that I kinda think like, "huh.." when I hear them. Ya, that line kinda went to me like that. Also "I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board" and a few others that escape me. I mean, when I think about it, I think that was the best for someone with his voice, It's not bad, it's just not great. Doesn't bother me really. It was still an epic and dark, and emotional film.
Besides, Plinkett (from RLM) even stated in his reviews that he consider people that says "the prequels killed my childhood" to be idiots. You can feel whatever you like about his sense of grotesque humor, but under all it, he contributes with questioning Hollywood franchises. And I do feel that franchises of all kinds can sometimes corrupt the the original concept, as with the SW prequels. So yeah I do have an own opinion, it just happens to be voiced byt RLM.
@Concretshky I guess you have a point ,but SW actually is acclaimed by a lot of people into english and literature to be great pieces of modern myth including the prequels. I don't think Lucas was milking it. Even if you read up on why he made them, he said he stopped because he had a family to watch and finally when he had the chance, he chose to finish it because he was passionate over the story. it's his life's work. Now he's going to personal movies. I don't think Lucas is corrupt.
Haha, you're pathetic. You say Star Wars fans take the concept too seriously? Have you thought about the possibility that you take the critique too seriously? Red Letter Media's reviews are meant to be ironic. Maybe you're too dumb to get that. I think his reviews are quite refreshing, because they speak about what he generally consider being the problems of modern film making, and the milking out of franchises. It's not just about Lucas and SW, far from it. Where are your sense of humor? (cont)
You've found someone else who thinks like you. I LOVED the prequels even more than the originals! And what you just said about them makes perfect sense everything people are criticizing. I loved the original films too, BEFORE I saw the prequels, and it proved that I can still enjoy all six films for what they are. I hope more people manage to see this: especially that F***er RedLetterMedia!
Finally, I find it ironic that when Peter Jackson released the Theatrical editions of LOTR they were rated one star to oblivion because people wanted the Extended Eds. But when Lucas releases the SW saga on Bluray, people freak out about the Theatricals!! Make up your flippin' minds!! Even if he releases Bluray Theatricals, they'll still have to clean them up, then uh oh! They've been altered - defeating the purpose! WHY would you want an out of date version of something?!
@BLAMcamp because people prefer to see the version they grew up with in the exact quality as it was seen in theaters. Sure, they're already available to watch on DVD, but since they were straight rips, there's a risk that someday, should there never be a respectful release, future generations won't be able to watch the originals in the highest quality anymore.
Also, you're totally right in that it's easy to hate and hard to create. Total props for being honest and I wish a hundred thousand views upon you - then again, if just talking kept me entertained for 45 mins I would hope your success comes from your own films rather than this.
I totally get the film school thing. I was a student myself and the problem I would find is that people who hate refuse to watch them I - VI. How can you hate something when you haven't even seen the story straight?!
Travel to the furthest corners of the internet no further. I watched every second of your 'trilogy' and 45 mins on Youtube is a tall order. I flippin LOVE the prequels.
What I've found is that the appreciative fans gather on starwars.com and the haters gather pretty much everywhere else. I love it all. Even Greedo shooting first doesn't bother me, sure it's not exactly the same but it doesn't really change Han. He still almost bailed on the entire Rebellion for money.
You ,sir, are positively brilliant, and I heartily salute you. :) Total, ardent, passionate agreement from me here, on each and every point - and as someone else mentioned below, it really is like you're reading my mind, too, just speakin' it aloud, right here. Fabulous work, so glad it's out there - you're a wonderful voice for the fandom, and I can't wait to see and hear more. :D
@BrickUnit who doesn't have memories of good friends that were little brats as well? Anakin was bratty at times but he was also a loyal friend until it all went to hell.
@BrickUnit The third act of Attack of the Clones where Anakin goes out of his way to travel to Geonosis and save Obi-Wan, the beginning of Revenge of the Sith where you can really feel their cameraderie and the scene later on where Anakin apologizes for his lack of patience to Obi-Wan. Anakin is a hard character to pull of because of his duality. He is constantly walking a thin line between two extreme personalities. As corny as the dialogue IS (I'll admit that) it conveys the message well...

The PREQUELS RULE!

Luke was also a whiny bitch! That is quality that all lead good characters in SW possess! :D
The Villains is what SW is most famous about...

only difference between James Dean and Hayden Christensen is the acting and dialogue.

If Charlie Day was talking about the Star Wars prequels this, this right here, would be it man.

in A new hope obi wan tells the audience how anakin was a good friend, but yet in the prequel trilogy he comes off as a little brat

@BrickUnit who doesn't have memories of good friends that were little brats as well? Anakin was bratty at times but he was also a loyal friend until it all went to hell.

@StendarSteelhorns what was an example of anakin being a loyal friend?
BrickUnit 6 months ago
@BrickUnit The third act of Attack of the Clones where Anakin goes out of his way to travel to Geonosis and save Obi-Wan, the beginning of Revenge of the Sith where you can really feel their cameraderie and the scene later on where Anakin apologizes for his lack of patience to Obi-Wan. Anakin is a hard character to pull of because of his duality. He is constantly walking a thin line between two extreme personalities. As corny as the dialogue IS (I'll admit that) it conveys the message well...
