I've heard many many many many interpretations of this aria and Callas is the only one who makes me feel the madness and despair of Lucia... her timbre, technique and diction, as well as her soul devoted to her interpretations, are beyond any 'nightingale-voiced soprano' to my heart and ears.
I think its like a..( I may sound idiotic right now) like a simple stone which was polished into a diamond. He had very bad vocal conditions and made simply the best out. I think its more hard work than talent.
@RomaN48000hz Wunderbar, you find it all in this aria? Sorry, I don't agree at all. In 1953 the conditions of her voice are very close to her best of 1949/50 and no other singer in the history of belcanto could obtain so magnificient results only with hard work. Here there are talent, genius, voice, acting and of course a lot of hard work to manage all so huhe qualities in only one singer. The best of ever!
@belcantismo belcantismo u r absolutely right. I thank God though for her schooling. This very approach to bel canto is, by all accounts, dead! Now we have bella voce.
The sound, the phrasing, the technique seems so alien whereas so many other persons trained in other ways produce other kinds of sounds which are sadly more common. No scooping or choppy passage work...just clean singing and dramatic, musical accentuation. I love this woman and thank u for posting the video.
@SkateNater To complete my opinion, I would remark that all the recordings from Callas was treated to magnify the presence of voice, letting in background the sound of orchestra. To give an example if you listen to Sutherland recordings, generally you can mark her voice is quite always in background mixed with ambient echoes and orchestra. I mean that if you put the voice under a magnifying glass it will possible to mark every weakness, even more the smallest one.
@SkateNater Sorry but I don't agree on 'terrible'. Coming from nightingale's voices somebody can name it original, different, strange. The definition of 'terrible' is unaccettable because that voice formed the complex of Maria Callas phenomenon and has special and original peculiarities. They joined with the wonderful acting are important to produce the uniqueness of the rainbow of emotion Maria Callas only was able to reproduce in definitve way for each one of her stunning interpretations.
@tamyrlin1986 "Her" timbre has been one of the most important peculiarity of the Maria Callas' phenomenon. I know that the personal taste is unquestionable but what I have just written is a statement of fact, not a simple or single opinion.
She was and is one the greatest ever..she is..yes, IS, because such divas live on in music,..Greek afrodite. When she died , her ashes were spread at the Aegean ocean..Back to Poseidon and Afrodite.Beautiful..SE AGAPAME MARIA MAS! GIA PANDA!
@JahPunKay, I think it's a good thing that people who are otherwise not exposed to this kind of music are introduced to this song, even if it is through the fifth element...That's how I found it and I think it's brilliant!
While reeling from that amazing performance thinks that MrMaz, should he feel so moved, simply buy it. Thank you belcantismo for sharing this wonderful piece!
Can't you post the WHOLE THING...from 'Il dolce ...' straight through to the end of 'Spargi d'amaro...' please!!!!??It's SO like being castrated to have it just suddenly 'end' at 'any old part'!!!!It makes the whole point of the two arias/the whole scena (from 'Il dolce' to 'Spargi') a waste of time if they're split up...it IS afteral a STORY and she IS ACTING that story with her voice...so it's akin to ending 'Hamlet' after he says "alas poor Yorrick"!!!!InSANE!!
Yeah...they SAY that but there are documentaries in here that are over two HOURS (see: 'The Falling Man')!!Please try at least...i'd LOVE to hear this all the way through to the end of 'Spargi...'...thank you!!!!XXXX!!
Lucia wasn't a "fragile woman"!!And when Callas sang THIS performance she was HUGE!!And anyway...beyond all of hat...the whole POINT of Callas is that she REESTABLISHED the CORRECT way that these roles (like Donizetti's 'Lucia') were MEANT to be sung...ie: with a voice with a 'great depth of tone'...a soprano sfogato singing the florid embellishments WITH that 'depth of tone' so making the embellishments MEAN something other than 'twittering like a bird' as singers had lapsed into doing!!
@yodavidnavarro just because you have a richer vocal texture doesnt mean you CANT play a fragile woman....in fact the best interpretations of fragile women are from sopranos with that richer texture because it conveys the emotion better :]
ASSOLUTA!

It's an astonishing performance. You can actually feel the craziness trough the voice. Her suffering is palpable. Such a mastery performance.

Бесподобна. Никакие новые "звезды" пока до ее уровня не дотягивают. Каллас поет сердцем.
