does anyone know why maiko kikuyu wasnt there at the time of filming becuase she is a fully fledged geiko now but in this documentary she isnt there ?
@kirstyana It is the same this Kirstyana, so you are right. hanafusa is the okiya hanagiku is the studio. This lady runs them both and they are connected...probably the stuff they dressed dawn in is from the studio side though (considering that she steps on the hiki etc)
Such a pity Dawn Porter didn't simply ASK the okaasan about sitting seiza (kneeling). "Kneeling is the traditional geisha posture, symbolizing subservience"? Sorry, but that's rot. Until the Meiji restoration, all Japanese sat seiza because their homes had tatami-mat floors and they didn't use chairs! Seiza is still used throughout the traditional arts, including tea ceremony which is completely dominated by men at the uppermost ranks. Porter is just projecting "subservience" on her hosts.

@marinawha She looks like a giant monster. For the first time, I think I'm afraid to visit Japan.

Maybe she means subservience towards showing respect toward one another, not necessarily toward men or clients.

I think that's really smart marketing. That okaasan knows how to make money and how to keep interest in the Geisha tradition alive.
