How about the 1973 Alabama "National Championship"? 'Bama claims despite lsoing in the bowl game to Notre Dame (also proclaimed the National Champion). I don't disagree with the 1966 argument per se, but the schedule strength of 'Bama vs. ND in 1966 is so vastly different. Notre Dame had a "'Bama 1966" year in '48 when they went 8-0-1 and lost the National title to Michigan despite having won the 1946, 1947, and 1949 titles. Would have been the only 4-peat in modern college football.
No team got cheated like Alabama of 1966. Undefeated, untied and the winners of the two national championships for the previous 2 years. In 1966, Alabama outscoured its opponents 267-37. Alabama led the nation in scoring defense with 6 shutouts and just 5 touchdowns allowed the entire year. Bama went on to play #5 Nebraska (9-1)in the Sugar Bowl beating them 34-7, to which Nebraska coach lamented, "They are better than the score indicates. They are the best football team I have ever seen."

But how about Notre Dame blowing out USC 51-0 the next week? Bear Bryant eventually got his chance at Notre Dame...but he lost.
