Um - I know I'm going to get mocked in here but i totally saw one of these off of M.City tower balcony. I thought it was a weather balloon at first but realized it had no string and wasn't moving at all. it just hovered 2000 ft off my balcony kind of between Cabrini Green and Streeterville. @Tubuletastic , I did consider that until I really focused and saw its steady shape of the body of it it was Pod shaped probably 40ft high 30 long and it flew at quite a distance maybe 1200 ft above at 3/4degrees angle in the sky my view was from the side walk and then from the edge of the street, from behind a building and they past out of my sight due to the buildings on the right of me. @Tubuletastic Winds have crosscurrents, especially at higher elevations... The pattern of movement looks so much like a baloon, I am pretty sure it is what you saw. The high speed climb could easily be due to the temperature difference.
