@john11311 I have to admit it hurts every new album they put out, and every new concert I see. They look bored and trapped. Buffalo 2004 in the rain is, I think, the last real rock concert they played. I agree with Rzeznik, fuck off if you don't like his music--that's why I wish he would play his music--the old shit they makes your ears bleed. All bands go down, but hopefully the GGD will make one last stand and rock out. And hopefully I'll be there to see it.
Very well put. It is rare to see someone as yourself posting as you have, especially when 99.9 % of the people are never going to put their pride aside, and see things for what they are from a bird's eye, not just front row. I'd always envisioned the last concert they do, going through all the albums and putting on the show of their lives. And I'd hope to be there to see it as well.
And what sense is that supposed to make? In order to sell out you have to do the following: 1) do something you don't want to do and 2) be paid very handsomely for doing it.They sold out, its plain and simple. The Goo Goo Dolls want to rock, that is what they have always been about. Their ballads have always been great, and Name means more to me than anyone else but the band. Its the principle and acknowledgement, that the band all but directly admits to selling out.
among all this talk of them changing and selling out with dizzy up the girl, people forget that that album was their first without george tutuska, their former drummer, and for a drummer he contributed a lot to the writing process. some of the changes may be due to that, but even so john said in an interview that he had been getting tired of the stuff they were playing and wanted to do something deeper. either way, i dont think they sold out
So George was out and yes, or course, he was a MAJOR contributor to the songwriting process of the band; never argued that. But for you to proclaim that shit like "Better Days", "Sweetest Lie", and "Notbroken", etc., are deeper than the songs portrayed on SSCW, ABNG AND DUTG? LMAO! You're funny.
@bvpstereo96 he also said in an interview if you dont like my music fuck off so tbh if u dont like the music the goo's produce now as johnny said fuck off
The story is on a youtube comment on an older video; there was an apparent eyewitness encounter of it. I believe they were eating nachos? I don't think anyone can say for sure, even yourself. You or I weren't there. Bu a key statement "more than any other fucker". At least you admitted it is the truth.
@stringoflies Name of the game these days. Blame it on Steve Jobs, the Napster kid..there's no such thing as selling out anymore. War has been declared on musicians and they get their name/music out there anyway they can. For the record, if I saw someone eating out of a dumpster or whatever, I'd help them. Especially if it was someone who meant something to me like the Goo's do. I'd like to hear this account though.
Touché. However, IMHO, their musical output has devolved, rather than having evolved now that they're older. And you should re-read my comments. I don't think they sold out in a traditional fashion, but more in a personal way. They'll never admit it though. For the longest time they tried to defend their rock music, but after 10+ years, had to give up on their dream of being a great big rock band. Someone here mentioned seeing the band eat out of a trash can after a concert in '93.
@stringoflies Anybody who let them eat of the trash is douchbag and I don't think it's true as they've always had jobs until Name. They don't suck. They haven't sold out more than any other fucker doing Coors commercials and they're a great live band.
People that say someone sold out don't even know what the fuck sold out means. If you're doing what you enjoy, it's not selling out. If you don't like the new records, don't listen and shut the fuck up. They aren't in the business to please you, they are in the business to please themselves. They just happen to have fans that love the result.
That is NOT what is being implied here. They sold out by departing from a traditional musical influence they hung onto for over a decade. The problem was, NOBODY WAS WILLING LISTEN to them as a rock band. When Name became a hit, that was the bands epiphany. Iris was next, and then came sympathy and better days and it goes on and on. Not once after 1998, did they write a traditional rock song that resembled anything from their former records. Agreed about Offspring, 100% though.
@stringoflies They aren't in the business for you. You don't get a record deal by being a musician for everyone else. Trust me. You don't starve at times, work incredibly hard for decades, spend weeks on a bus only to unload gear and play for just a few hours. There's a load of shit you can't even fathom that goes into being a musician. They play whatever the hell they want to play. People that call a band sell outs are dumber than fuck. They have the right to evolve.
I dont understand the caption. They didnt sell out at all, they still play these songs. I saw them in Houston not to long ago and they played a bunch of their oldies. Even their bassist (i forgot his name all of a sudden) sang a couple of his songs, and those deffinately werent award winning songs. They were just being themselves and anyone who wanted to be apart of that was welcome to show up
The songs you saw at this recent concert was part of a "test", according to the lead singer, to see how the oldies would fare with the crowd after 10 years; it was merely a spoof... This band has been out of touch with its roots for just about a decade now.
Hey fuckfaces!Making a good album that is well recorded, packed with accesible songs and diffrent from the bands first album is not selling out.anyway their first album for the most part sucked so yeah its getting better. Its doing what they want to do.No band is truely a sell out until its been proven that they only wrote songs(or tried to) that people would like/what is trendy at the time and immedialtly become hits.See:Silverchair,Stone Temple Pilots,Kiss(Carnival of Souls),Bush and many more.
Oh come on... You guys must have changing tastes in music, right? In Middle School, I listened to Cradle of Filth and Iron Maiden, as a freshman, I listened to Avenged Sevenfold and Three Days Grace. As a senior, I listened to Muse, Opeth, and Third Eye Blind. Now I jam to Goo Goo Dolls, Lit, and other 90s.
It seems like they went from Punk to Alternative. It's who they are, and it's what they do. And they do it great. I jam Superstar Carwash and Dizzy Up the Girl. The 'Dolls just rock. Period.
Then WHY have they decided to not " jam Superstar Carwash and Dizzy Up the Girl" live for the the last decade? Clearly those songs/records make them no money and they choose to play these pussy ass tunes to keep the crowd coming and pay the bills. It is sad, indeed.
@ItsSomeDeadGuy heavier doesn't mean bter, i liked a boy named goo 2 but they evolved, it happens 2 all bands, at leas d gud 1's c Coldplay, U2, Muse, even Incubus, i'm a musician n i use 2 like heavy 2 but then i realized d more melody d better, only d bands dat refuse 2 change never grow musically.
@jepc92003@jepc92003 Funny, I liked Muse and U2 much better before they evolved. Melody is good and all, but when it's not supported by emotion or power, I have no use for it. For example, this is why I can't listen to 30 Seconds to Mars: their music lacks power of any kind. GGD's new stuff is pretty good (except Gutterflower, which was meh), but it's nothing compared to A Boy Named Goo.
alright obviously the person that uploaded this video has no fucking idea that they have been around for 25 years and people still pay to see their concerts, just because they're not making the same type of rock music that they started out making doesnt mean that they aren't still a great band... they have done more with their lives than you ever will so maybe you should get off of your ass and stop acting like the music critic that you are not.
@DahMasterDebaters Yeah...the Goos used to sound heavier and more punk. If you like this, I recommend you check out their early albums like their self-titled debut, Jed, Hold Me Up, Superstar Car Wash, and of course A Boy Named Goo. After that last album I listed, their sound changed.
i hate the term sell out, band's don't sell out, as Drumit22 said they evolved, hell they were playing on Letterman and already doing pretty well for themselves anyway, why would they NEED to sell out
Ive always liked this song. I had respect for this band after I heard this on the Twister soundtrack. Good soundtrack by the way. Couple awesome Van Halen songs on there.
i have a demo tape< yes tape. only has three songs on it. there first album had a cover of blue oyster cult's reaper on it, and lance diamond doing prince song on hold me up!!! i have really stuck with this band since the beginning will continue to do so, saw them at first ave in mnpls in '93, here in spokane in 2000. fun band love three piece bands.
warning to everyone who reads that caption under the video, the guy who uploaded the video has no idea what hes talking about, i come from buffalo just like the goos, and they sold out on a boy named goo, so get your facts straight bud lol.
So you're implying they sold out with 'Name'? That song was just another acoustic piece they always included on each album. Your theory could also be applied if 'We Are The Normal', Two Days In February and James Dean became hits. Difference is, Name was a REAL song and he wrote it in a depressed state, due to his failing career in music; ABNG was going to be the band's final album but then Name unintentionally became a hit. Get YOUR OWN facts straight, pal!
@stringoflies superstar car wash only had very little commercial success, they were lucky to even get a spot on conan o'brien back in 1994, john rzeznik even admits that name brought them to success, they were a hardcore punk band, and then they sold out on a boy named goo. they are nothing but a soundtrack band now.
@stringoflies Exactly. They released Only One as the first single I believe, and then they released Flat Top as the second single. A radio station somewhere picked up on Name, and it became a hit, then they taped and released the promo video for it. The Goo Goo Dolls hadn't even released it as a single yet, and it was already getting some serious attention. So you're right, it became a hit unintentionally. The Goo Goo Dolls never sold out.
@stringoflies Actually I saw them in Syracuse and Johnny actually admitted to the crowd that they sold out with Name...he told a hilarious story about hearing the song over the in-store radio while walking through a grocery store late one night.
@TrevorTime24 They had no hits and barely any commercial success up until this album, they went from a underground punk band to a rock band. They officially sold out on a boy named goo.
Feel like I stepped into a time machine...Letterman looks scary as Hell. As for selling out, it's the same with ALL bands in EVERY genre. Holy sheeet 15 years ago!
look the ggd's have evolved....there music was awesome in the 80's,90's,and today.....and yes they were a little bit harder way back when, doesnt mean they sold out by no means.......they have just grown up...and as they have grown, so has there music....and lets just pause and appreciate that......plz dont trash this band.....this band is why i love music....its why i want to be a musician.....this band makes me love living!!! why cant that just be enough.....
Robby was the main vocalist for the first 10 years and then John took over. I've noticed that with each album Robby get's less and less of his songs put on the albums. I bet with th next one he wont get any. Having said this, they've been together a long time despite this. Robby seems like a great dude (so does John).
wow! that's quite a pumping performance! I think that people may have possibly called this a nirvana rip off at the time. The were formed a year before Nirvana. I don't think they sold out. What the hell does that even mean anyway. Does it mean making your music more accessable to the masses to make money off? They have to survive somehow don't they? Who knows what goes on with a major label either. I'm sure you can't totally get your own way. Quite an interesting story this band. (cont)
Used to watch these guys in the mid 80s at the Continental in downtown Buffalo NY. They were more of a punk band then running around like idiots on the stage. Glad to see that they have become successful. Rob Takac is a great guy too as is his whole family. Graduated 2 years behind him at West Seneca East HS.
i wuddnt say they sold out but i agree that their older stuff is the best :)) but having sed that, sum of their new stuff is brilliant too so. i dont really care i guess, theyre still my fav band :)))
it doesnt matter what they play or write for that matter they still rock as a band i do agree they were better back then but they still rock to this day
I like them very much! I mean "Iris" and "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" are the songs that turned me over to Rock, but after going back to their first album and listening to their latest albums, the Goo Goo Dolls started off as a rock band and yes I would like them to do more songs like this every now and then! Great song this is!
I never have understood the term "selling out". If a band can make the music that they want to make and get paid for it, why not do it? I'd do it. Chances are, most people would. It's just human nature. To call that "selling out" is just ridiculous to me.
- they had sappy songs on this record too.. even from the start of the band.
- people just enjoyed the softer stuff from them in the early 2000's more.. taste buds change.. there is always a new "THING" to listen to in every erra.
whether it's called evolving.. or selling out.... it's their work... and if their work got some cash outta it... and alot of fans... they've obviously met the goal they set from the start..
I love whatever they do. Ballads, heavy stuff. I don't care. I love them. And Johnny Rzeznik can do whatever the hell he likes as far as I'm concerned!
I was only 1 when this song came out, but i appreciate all of their music. A true fan loves all of an artists music. There is one thing i can say though, about things which get better with age- Johnny Rzeznik! ;)
It's funny how Johnny Boy Rzeznik sounds so much heavier in this than he looks, isn't it? I mean he's got the "pretty boy" thing going on bad (intended or not) but there ain't nothin "pretty boy" about the music!
fuck, i miss the 90's and im only 23, and i dont care what the GOO used a a musical platform, Nearly all of their music is fucking awesome and riot inspiring, true to the heart and fucking bold.
- they had sappy songs on this record too.. even from the start of the band.

@stringoflies I agree, GGD took a turn around the mid 2000's. Their last CD I bought was Gutterflower around 2002, only for the hit "Here is Gone". But yeah, A Boy Named Goo was a good album, IMO Dizzy up the girl was their high-water mark for music.
@stringoflies Because you're allowed to go back listen to the old music too, just because they evolved and we like the evolved music as well, doesn't mean we can't go back and listen to the older stuff too.
look i dont like their new stuff. but they didnt sell out. they got older. they also wanted to make music for as their job not say alright weve stuck true to our roots but were 35/40 playing punk music, weve been doing bullshit jobs to keep playing music. it took me a long time to realize this. people also grow out of what they do
just got home from Greensboro NC Goo Goo Dolls concert 4-23-2010 fuckin amazing they know how to put on a show but they didnt play this song, other than that it was great
@420Grunge, I went to Greensboro too. What a great show!! Saw them in Wilmington too . Wish they would be in NC again! Love how they sound great live! Got some great pics as a nice souveneir!
@stringoflies I think the same about the GGD. I cant stand their recent songs. I kept with Flap top, naked, slave girl, burning' up inside, aint that unusual, you know what i mean, million miles away, on the lie, we are the normal. But for me ABNG is the best album, i just cant get tired of listening.
if any one has anything COHERENTLY negative to say about john or the rest of the goo goo dolls , come leave me an email , and ill respond to u accordingly
Its funny cause until recently I found out that The Replacements were a huge impact on them. And now everytime I hear the GOOS I hear that "replacements" sound.
lol i don't know why this was recommended for me when i listen to slipknot, snot and Lamb of God... but i guess its ok... better than other stuff on the radio
The Goo Goo Dolls blow away all other power pop rock bands because they're honest and actually struggled against all odds to make it on sheer talent and undying will....unlike the corporate fake bands like Nickleback and Matchbox 20.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
dude you must do alot of drugs because Nickleback is one of the best bands out there right now! Have you heard Dark Horse yet? I diud'nt think so loser!
I can't beleive it took them 10 years and 5 albums to just get on national TV, also Robby was really chubby back then, he really shed off the pounds over the years. There old old stuff when Robby was then lead singer, they were pretty much early grunge/punk, nothing like they are now.

warning to everyone who reads that caption under the video, the guy who uploaded the video has no idea what hes talking about, i come from buffalo just like the goos, and they sold out on a boy named goo, so get your facts straight bud lol.
MIKEJSCHERRER 1 year ago 2
@MIKEJSCHERRER
Get YOUR OWN facts straight, pal!
stringoflies 1 year ago 15
@stringoflies Actually this is 100% true. I don't know much about Goo Goo Dolls but this is correct.
redbulletlive 11 months ago
@stringoflies superstar car wash only had very little commercial success, they were lucky to even get a spot on conan o'brien back in 1994, john rzeznik even admits that name brought them to success, they were a hardcore punk band, and then they sold out on a boy named goo. they are nothing but a soundtrack band now.
MIKEJSCHERRER 11 months ago
@stringoflies Exactly. They released Only One as the first single I believe, and then they released Flat Top as the second single. A radio station somewhere picked up on Name, and it became a hit, then they taped and released the promo video for it. The Goo Goo Dolls hadn't even released it as a single yet, and it was already getting some serious attention. So you're right, it became a hit unintentionally. The Goo Goo Dolls never sold out.
Marshallsg 9 months ago
@stringoflies Actually I saw them in Syracuse and Johnny actually admitted to the crowd that they sold out with Name...he told a hilarious story about hearing the song over the in-store radio while walking through a grocery store late one night.

@TrevorTime24 They had no hits and barely any commercial success up until this album, they went from a underground punk band to a rock band. They officially sold out on a boy named goo.

look the ggd's have evolved....there music was awesome in the 80's,90's,and today.....and yes they were a little bit harder way back when, doesnt mean they sold out by no means.......they have just grown up...and as they have grown, so has there music....and lets just pause and appreciate that......plz dont trash this band.....this band is why i love music....its why i want to be a musician.....this band makes me love living!!! why cant that just be enough.....

To call that "selling out" is just ridiculous to me.

i love this video.. but not to be a dick..

The album containing this song is called 'A Boy Named Goo', and it was released on March 14, 1995. The movie 'Twister' was released on May 10, 1996.

The Goo Goo Dolls blow away all other power pop rock bands because they're honest and actually struggled against all odds to make it on sheer talent and undying will....unlike the corporate fake bands like Nickleback and Matchbox 20.

I can't beleive it took them 10 years and 5 albums to just get on national TV, also Robby was really chubby back then, he really shed off the pounds over the years. There old old stuff when Robby was then lead singer, they were pretty much early grunge/punk, nothing like they are now.
