hey guys, about a month ago I saw a longer clip to the osoto variants shown at the end of this clip, can I be directed to that please? great stuff youre doing
i just realised that this is the move i got hit with on the mat, im 55kg, my opponent 83kg. in 3 seconds i went from standing to literally flying away and hitting my head on the side of the dojo, and that time was including his run up and me flying away and realising what happened.
@useless241 They aren't allowed in Judo, but they are in catch wrestling and Sambo. Paulson, an expert in all of these arts, is just showing how to combine the different moves for MMA.
@D26808 true, people in mma are not used to people trying to throw them down standing. They're used to BJJ or wrestlers going for the legs. Judo is underraed in mma and I'm glad Ronda Rousey is kicking ass in womens mma. It would be awesome if she wins he title fight with the little experience she has in MMA.
@D26808 agreed. I think Judo/ Greco Roman is the next wave of takedowns in MMA. Now that everyone defends the single and doubles (especially with the cage), throws are a great counter. Just look at Jon Jones.
@D26808 those are called armchair wrestlers. fan boys with no expeirence other that talking about the last fight taht was on UFC. when u ask them if they do bjj they go OH OH OH I WAS TOTALY GONNA DO IT BUT (Insert excuse here) :D
@Shonem no, you don't need much momentum at all. Barely more than you would be using to punch them anyway. Also, often if you're skilled, the opponent will give you opportunities by being off balance themselves when they attack or they are not aware of the risk when you close the gap.
UFC Jon Jones, Jimy "The Kid" Hettes, Hector Lombard and Strikeforce Ronda Rousey are particularly pro at this type of takedown.
@Shonem It is actually quite effective, it is all leverage, he is demonstrating a running form of the move or a modified form, this move is commonly done by shifting all the weight onto the leg that is being hooked. It is a very simple and high scoring takedown.
@Shonem Also, most of the time in non-street fights you do want to take yourself down too since you not only land on top of them, using them as your cushion, but also almost certainly be able to achieve a dominant position immediately after.
@albate Absolutely he is. I've seen these "runing judo throws" for decades now as a practicing judoka and hapkidoka/hapkidoist. Interestingly, these same throws are in capoeira gungfu shiau chiao and other African martial arts. I suspect that many systems have these throws in them.

Fedor did this all the time. He would get in close from his punches and secure takedowns like this. Watch the noguiera fights

I began with Judo and got my brown belt before I started BJJ... you would be amazed at how easy these throws are to pull off in a bjj tournament.

Looks like you would have to have some good momentum to get someone down with those first two, and most likely take yourself down with them. lol
Not at all a bad thing though,.
Great video.

@Shonem absolutely. Judo is about balance. Keeping yours and disrupting your opponents. Speed and timing play a big role in that.

@utubesqueeze
The takedown at 0:20 though is what I was referring to.
You would need to have the worst balance in the world to fall to that, or the other person would need to be practically charging you.

buffmedic01 1 month ago
@buffmedic01
In that position with just one leg being hooked, I've seen someone pulls a lateral drop off on the person with the hooked leg.
I mean, the shove move that gets the take down done would not be very easy to do while in the clench hooked up.
Not as to say it wouldn't work just fine without it.
Shonem 1 month ago
@Shonem many people who start fights in the street (and he does say this is for street) stand square on and have shit balance. Especially when drunk.
