It's the only thing I could think of :-) It's certainly an unusual arrangement. Those days TOTP was almost always mimed. Any orchestral passages were retracked by the BBC's own in house musicians (union rules or something). There were a few live performances at times, but I've never seen what seems to be a hybrid mimed / live performance before.
@PatGleeson123 FWIW there are many TOTP performances from the 70s that used mimed/recorded backing and live lead vocal. Also, I'm not so sure that MO is playing live here. For one thing, he's using a pick (which he nearly always used for miming purposes) and yet he's getting the guitar tone he normally has to use fingerpicking to achieve. Plus there are moments where his hand movements don't match what we can hear.
Thanks for posting. Great audio on this track - and yes - it's a unique version that seems to be a live recording that Mike used for playback purposes - as the original single would have left him very little to do!
This is a weird one. It's not the studio track and there are enough fluffs to suggest that it was recorded AS live somewhere but the band are still miming to that recording. Most unusual.
Mike Oldfield goes DISCO !!

If MO is live then where is the guitar jacked in? MO is a genius in my eyes but he can't transmit his guitar input telepathically (yet)

@JeridanCork
I'd say that MO's solo guitar is live, and the rest is backing based on the 'Exposed' tour arrangement: i.e MO is live the band are miming.

@PatGleeson123 Oh, hey Pat. I recognise you from tubular.net - thanks for the suggestion.

I didn't know he had recorded it in studio. The only version I knew of til now was the one in "Exposed".

The 3 backing singers are the least glamorous chicks I've ever seen. Fantastic track tho, Oldfield is just amazing.
