The game only sold as well as it did because it was almost 5 years since a last FF game. People were drooling in anticipation for anything, as long as it was Final Fantasy. I even bought the game myself and did not even remotely enjoy it. I have high hopes for 13-2, but am a little weary of Square-Enix these days...

Evidently, my promotion didn't help much. Final Fantasy XII sold 6 million copies on PS2 alone. FFXIII sold about 2 million less than that across all platforms.

Where on earth did you get those numbers? Last numbers I see, which are admittedly old but still, XIII has sold more than 6.2mill to XII's 5.2 mill. t actually broke a franchise sales record for the first week. Without a doubt the game was flawed, and you nailed the big ones. It was entirely too linear and the battle system was frustrating at times, but you not being able to figure out the battle system doesn't make it bad. It was without a doubt the best part.
Without using a catch-all generality like 'horrible' or 'stupid' or 'doody-head'... explain even ONE THING about the review that was factually inaccurate.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the pre-roll advertisements that ran before every video on GameTrailers, IGN, GameSpy, etc. prior to the game's release. Or the fully animated half-page FFXIII ads on said sites. Or the fact that review sites who give games a good score are more likely to receive more of these ad campaigns, which serve as the core financial support for review websites.

Destructoid is a professional review site. And they provided the following quote: "...this latest addition to the Final Fantasy series is a pompous and masturbatory affair, created seemingly to promote the developer's ego first, and the player's enjoyment second." Then gave the game a well-deserved 4/10.

I don't think think it's a bad game but it's not really that great either. It's just alright. The battle system isn't nearly the best in the series and it was quite linear, but my main problem with the game is that it just doesn't really feel like a Final Fantasy game to me, it's just a slightly below average rpg with the Final Fantasy name. XIII's story was just boring and not very interesting and it seems like Square focused more on how good the graphics looked and less about everything else.

Whatever skill past titles had was more than 13. 12 was all about moving around and pick your attacks (whether you change the battle options or whatever). But it at least had more skill than 13.

And 12 having character development? Pull the other one. None of the main party except maybe Basche or Gabranth developed at all.

because you have to use the right shift at the right time and upgrade each shift to your playing style. In which, you can use the shifts properly and possibly defeat an enemy thats more powerful than you are. else wise, you couldnt defeat before with just all out attack
@nathanexplosion94 So.. it basically has the same strategy as a game as any of the Call of Duty games: if you're getting your ass kicked, change to a different class? Because if I recall, the game does involve lots of hitting the Auto Attack button. (Aside from boss fights, and first time encountering new enemies, and discovering their weaknesses.)

umm strategy and rpg go hand n hand. You cant always just attack them with guerrilla tactics. you have to weaken them with certain attacks and sometimes you have to use the right boosts on yourself to defeat them. Last time i checked that is definately a strategy.

Although I hated 13 (it didn’t actually get interesting until post story), and agree with his points, I’m getting 13-2. I’m not in denial about anything. However, the fact remains that not everybody wants to play FPS war games and alien shooters. And also don’t want to be a knight slashing goblins through a viewfinder. I like the bright, colorful style of JRPGs just as I grew up playing them. So I’ll take what I can get when my major consoles are basically for viewing movies nowadays.

I hate when your controlled character dies, it's game over even when your other 2 characters are still alive. I stopped playing this game and put in SquareSOFTs Final Fantasy 6. Why did SquareENIX do this? Probably because of ENIX. Final Fantasy turned to SHIT after ENIX took over. I don't even consider SquareSOFT and SQEENIX as the same company. I've played every Final Fantasy(With the exception of 11 an 12) when they were released and I have to say that FF4-9 happen to be the best.
This game was the worst FF ever, anyone who says otherwise is just stupid and any dunce who buys ff13-2 is just in denial about the decline of RPG's in the next generation consoles. Replacing speed for intelligence was not the way 2 go. Lost Odyssey was one of the last real RPG's. Even Skyrim which is sweet is not really an RPG but rather an action based world simulator, If tomb raider does not go well for them sqaure enix will go bankrupt and they deserve to.
I have not played a Japanese game in 9 years. I got tired of hacking and fucking slashing when i was 13. I can't believe people actually still buy Japanese games, i mean... wow. Part of the reason the game sucks is cuz square wanted to appeal to a western audience aka xbox 360 users. It doesn't excuse square but that's part of the reason it's so linear.
If they wanted to tell the story, why do they make you read the text log shit they dump on you to even vaguely understand what's going on (especially early on)? As Yahtzee once said, "This is not good story telling! You're suppossed to weave exposition into the narrative, not hand the audience a fucking glossary as they walk into the theatre!" I also heard there's a way to exploit the paradigms by making copies and switching after using one is used to instantly fill half the cooldown bar.
I just bought the game yesterday on Amazon for like $25 brand new (including shipping) for my 360. Despite what many are saying, I'm still gonna play it, and I'll probably even enjoy it. Linearity doesn't bother me that much at all, since most games I play are mostly linear anyway.

This game does leave a bad first impression, and the linearity sticks out like a penis that was severed after going into the glory hole. Reason for this? You're held to the story too much, and have nothing to distract you on the side to give you extra stuff to do on your way through.
I had assumptions for 13's battle system when I first played it as well, but then I realized the battle system is way too fast to allow you to control your whole party at the same time. It would be chaotic. Understanding roles will allow you to manipulate your partners better through the paradigm shift. The only thing I really don't like is getting game over when only the character you're playing as dies, and not being able to switch the character you're controlling.
This game fucking suckd, i fell asleep a couple of times. To how boring and how the lame the characters were. Plus the battle system was shit, at first glance it looks ok. But like Razor said, it plays itself. All you have to do is use Libra, and then press XXXXXX over and over for auto battle. I dint even finish the game, and i playd up to were you get to chapter 11. Dint feel epic at all, and its on my shelf collecting dust. Guess all sell it to some fan fanboy that dosent have taste in games.

I know why you think SOMETIMES!! You see, when you choose 2 commandos (Com) and a Raveger (Rav), You (COM) and the (Rav) will fight the same monster, but the othe (Com) will fight the other monster. If you choose 1 (Com) and 2 (Raves) you'll all fight the same monsters. The Ravegers follow you, but the (Coms) don't fight the monster that the leader (You) do/does. But the (Ravs) always fight the same monster that you do. I hope that helped :)
I also mention the absurd corridor-like linearity, the fact that the story gives the player no reason to care about the characters' predicament, the lack of control of your character and party, the fact that one character dying means an instant game over... and that's just from memory.
Just because you fixated on one thing to better wrap your meager intellect around a more nuanced problem the game has doesn't mean that's the only grievance I itemized.

@chickmcjr I was being sarcastic about character development, but really, this game presents the characters that has the majority of gamers hating them. Seriously, all this game cares about is to tell the story of the characters that is the main characters.
Whatever skill past titles had was more than 13. 12 was all about moving around and pick your attacks (whether you change the battle options or whatever). But it at least had more skill than 13.

Like come on, finding weaknesses in your enemies doesn't take skill it takes mild intelligence. And let's be reasonable here, I fucking hated FFXIII but saying FF1 had better character development? lolwut. FF2 did. FF3 didn't.
And 12 having character development? Pull the other one. None of the main party except maybe Basche or Gabranth developed at all.

I question if you really played this game, Serah was made into a Lac'ie after the engagement.
Also you got the combat completely wrong, it is very well designed and you clearly just suck, in fact my biggest problem was that it was to easy, and before anyone accuses me of being a fanboy I admit the game isnt the best and I have only played 3 FF games, but this guy clearly just hates JRPGs in general and the game does open up a lot before the end.

because you have to use the right shift at the right time and upgrade each shift to your playing style. In which, you can use the shifts properly and possibly defeat an enemy thats more powerful than you are. else wise, you couldnt defeat before with just all out attack

Because if I recall, the game does involve lots of hitting the Auto Attack button. (Aside from boss fights, and first time encountering new enemies, and discovering their weaknesses.)

umm strategy and rpg go hand n hand. You cant always just attack them with guerrilla tactics. you have to weaken them with certain attacks and sometimes you have to use the right boosts on yourself to defeat them. Last time i checked that is definately a strategy.

Although I hated 13 (it didn’t actually get interesting until post story), and agree with his points, I’m getting 13-2. I’m not in denial about anything. However, the fact remains that not everybody wants to play FPS war games and alien shooters. And also don’t want to be a knight slashing goblins through a viewfinder. I like the bright, colorful style of JRPGs just as I grew up playing them. So I’ll take what I can get when my major consoles are basically for viewing movies nowadays.

@TowelTroi i forgot to mention that also in tales of graces f, you can bring your friends to play the game together in same time (in battlefield to be exact). so, if you get more from this game than FFXIII-2 can ever have. but you have to wait a little longer to come out (in march to be exact if you live in US. but if you're from UK, you'll get it in summer)

I hate when your controlled character dies, it's game over even when your other 2 characters are still alive. I stopped playing this game and put in SquareSOFTs Final Fantasy 6. Why did SquareENIX do this? Probably because of ENIX. Final Fantasy turned to SHIT after ENIX took over. I don't even consider SquareSOFT and SQEENIX as the same company. I've played every Final Fantasy(With the exception of 11 an 12) when they were released and I have to say that FF4-9 happen to be the best.

Replacing speed for intelligence was not the way 2 go. Lost Odyssey was one of the last real RPG's. I have not played a Japanese game in 9 years. I got tired of hacking and fucking slashing when i was 13. I can't believe people actually still buy Japanese games, i mean... wow. If they wanted to tell the story, why do they make you read the text log shit they dump on you to even vaguely understand what's going on (especially early on)? As Yahtzee once said, "This is not good story telling! You're suppossed to weave exposition into the narrative, not hand the audience a fucking glossary as they walk into the theatre!" I also heard there's a way to exploit the paradigms by making copies and switching after using one is used to instantly fill half the cooldown bar.

You know, I was expecting this review to be 1 that I was gonna completely disagree with but surprisingly, I do agree with alot of this.
Yes, I will admit, this game did fall flat on alot of areas but I can say I did enjoy this game same as I enjoyed FF7, 8, 9 and 10.
10-2 was ok but 12 was complete utter nonsense.
People may say "How can I like FF13 and hate FF12?" well I guess I just hated the story for FF12 and found it to be un-interesting and plain rubbish while FF13 I found enjoyable.

i think the blame should be on both the fanboys and squareinx. It would have been much more beneficial for them to release quality, sure you have the fanboys who will fork over their life savings for that exclusive Lightning figurine. But that isolates casual gamers, the game is currently in the bargain bin at most/all game stores going for 15$ brand new.

This game does leave a bad first impression, and the linearity sticks out like a penis that was severed after going into the glory hole. Reason for this? You're held to the story too much, and have nothing to distract you on the side to give you extra stuff to do on your way through.

I had assumptions for 13's battle system when I first played it as well, but then I realized the battle system is way too fast to allow you to control your whole party at the same time. It would be chaotic. Understanding roles will allow you to manipulate your partners better through the paradigm shift. The only thing I really don't like is getting game over when only the character you're playing as dies, and not being able to switch the character you're controlling.

This game fucking suckd, i fell asleep a couple of times. To how boring and how the lame the characters were. Plus the battle system was shit, at first glance it looks ok. But like Razor said, it plays itself. All you have to do is use Libra, and then press XXXXXX over and over for auto battle. I dint even finish the game, and i playd up to were you get to chapter 11. Dint feel epic at all, and its on my shelf collecting dust. Guess all sell it to some fan fanboy that dosent have taste in games.

@xRazorFistx I'm playing FFXIII right now,and one thing that really pisses me off is that i can't even tell my characters to all gang up on 1 enemy.This fucking system gets me killed sometimes because sometimes if i could tell my characters to kill specific enemies,i could save my goddam ass,instead they hit random enemies on the screen.
Earlier,i was killing a king bahamut and constantly died cause my character would hit the other enemy instead when i wanted them to gang up on king bahamut.

I know why you think SOMETIMES!! You see, when you choose 2 commandos (Com) and a Raveger (Rav), You (COM) and the (Rav) will fight the same monster, but the othe (Com) will fight the other monster. If you choose 1 (Com) and 2 (Raves) you'll all fight the same monsters. The Ravegers follow you, but the (Coms) don't fight the monster that the leader (You) do/does. But the (Ravs) always fight the same monster that you do. I hope that helped :)

I also mention the absurd corridor-like linearity, the fact that the story gives the player no reason to care about the characters' predicament, the lack of control of your character and party, the fact that one character dying means an instant game over... and that's just from memory.
Just because you fixated on one thing to better wrap your meager intellect around a more nuanced problem the game has doesn't mean that's the only grievance I itemized.

I can't name 1 good newer game but I can name off many great older games. Especially PC games. They were much better then any games out today. Diablo 2, Might and magic 5, 6, 7, and 8. Daggerfall, Darkstone, Baldurs Gate 2, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale 2, Neverwinter Nights. And there are many more. I want 1 more great rpg in my life
