Iris DeMent is simply a musical Shakespeare with a voice that evokes all the happiness and pain we experience in life. And as for Jacqueline's rendition, well they've "done nothing wrong"...
@TheMomob4 - Hardly a fan of music at all. Still, I find Lady Gaga does NOT sing through her NOSE. Which makes her infinitely more talented than the shrill and discordant Iris Dement.
Twouselesslegs if you dont like her music stop by god watching her videos and let the rest of us enjoy it.If we wanted to listen to you we would watch your crap.
useless if you dont like her music stop by god watching her videos and let the rest of us enjoy it.If we wanted to listen to you we would watch your crap.
So THIS is the woman who single handedly ruined the Cohen Brother's fine film "True Grit"? My goodness, I've never known of anybody who sings from their NOSE who wasn't named Al Falfa.
has anybody got jacquie singing loving arms from this show it was later with jools holland and pauls liars bar blooper added a bit of realism to the song ha ha
Iris has the voice to tear you heart out when singing this song, Jacqueline although a great voice just cant put the emotion into this that it requires she just sings the words.
It takes something else , something special to get deep into the emotions of country lyrics.
i think Jacqui's has a fantastic voice. Wonder what she is doing now since she split with the band? She was the best female vocalist the band EVER had. To think she was at a party and the lead vocalist of The Beautiful South happened to be there and he heard her singing and knew right away she would be a great vocalist with the band - how right was he??
Once again a thank you both Jacqueline, & Iris. I have enjoyed well sung Country songs all my life, and heard, and seen many performer's. In my book you are at the top of all. Thank's once again RockyDon H
Come on down to little New Zealand sometime, we'd love to have you for a song and a cuppa
Great contrasting styles in these two artist! If one can appreciate both, then you have become a lover of music without a label. Great stuff from both these talented gals!!
Well said - more or less what I posted - though mine has "a slant " towards Jacqui's style.
Watch for the drive by shooting artist known as ACEHOLE - he's a bit biased, and closed minded, this sort of thing happens when you never venture out of your own county, never mind your own country.
@Veee8 Thanks.. I find it almost insulting how some people care more about an artist's background, nationality, skin color, or their looks and then use those things to judge their art! The great thing about music is you can enjoy it with your eyes closed and never knowing the artist. Have a great day Veee8!!
Iris's voice sounds formed from the Grand Ol' Opry with that distinct southern twang, almost cliche - it's nice in its own way but nothing compared to Jacqui's smooth velvety delivery, Jacqui's voice has a thick coat of butter all over it...hm, hmm, hmmmmmm.
@Veee8 Fuck jacqui. Where do you think she got something to rip off from? You're a fuckin Brit, aren't you. "Almost cliche," fuck you. Jacqui sounds like a million other bitches singing in American karoke bars. Big fuckin deal. Iris has a signature that no other woman could ever dream of matching. In America, we covet individualism, not popular perfection. You wanna talk "cliche" look up whatshername's vocals. Why does Europe fuckin BLOW so much? 'God kill the Queen, as long as you take Obama!"
@Veee8 You must not be American or from the Ozark area of the U.S. Otherwise, you could hear that Iris' accent and voice are authentic and not some commercially developed artifact. Everyone has his/her rights to preferences, but Iris is an American original and, in my opinion, no one comes close to her interpretations of her own songs. I am glad to hear someone else try and Jacqui gives it a good shot.
@Veee8 ---Iris' accent is a particular accent, it is from Arkansas. The Grand Ol' Opry has no particular sound as many artists come from many parts of the Southland and sing. But if you listen there are particulars from different areas. What is gorgeous about Iris is that there is a quality of realism, pain and hope all in the same note with a sweet quality and deepness that no other artist can put forth. There is something about this woman that is amazing.
I agree, Iris has a realism to her singing and writing that is truly heartfelt - lovely all the same but not my preference...I prefer the smoky, sultry, breathy, buttery smoooooth delivery of Jacqu. Her style is far more "versatile" for Jazz, Blue, rock, pop, gospel, whichever she chooses, She is truly UNDERRATED. I like Gwen Farclas "top rated" comment for this post "This is a bit special, isn't it?...and that about sums it up.
@aplainchristian I agree , Iris has the ability ( as George jones sang ) to tear your heart out when she sings, and it seems to be intrinsic in her, built deep in her soul, she is amazing .
Dave here. While I find Iris adorable, I think Jacquie's voice would've sounded better on "Our Town." Mellower. Not so shrill. Still, the plaintiveness in Iris' voice did fit the final scene in "Northern Exposure" very well. Be well Dear Hearts.
Saw Iris in Denver once on Colfax Ave while going to Metro State - she's a treat for sure. Especially if you come from a little farm and relate to her lyrics.
Jackie Abbott is a very versatile singer. I love the way she beats Iris Dement at her own game, while still having to read the words from a sheet handed to her 30 mins earlier. Yet she always looks uncomfortable with her own ability.
I remember the BBC Jools Holland Special (from which this came) very well. Jackie did a great version of Loving Arms with a gospel choir.
Wonderful observation - Jacqui just started to hit her stride but it never quite came across as truly confident - you are so right.
From her killer glances at the camera in "Don't Marry Her" then she'd look away just "a beat" too soon, but it worked!... she is truly wonderful and I wouldn't have her any other way. Cheers.
my daughter loved this song and my little grandaughter, age 9 at the time, loved it too, cause her mom did. Now my daughter has passed away and my grandaughter was kidnapped at the funeral by an estranged distant relative.

What a beautiful breakup/divorce song. My wife and I both used to cry listening to it before we broke up without ever admitting to each other that it said what we couldn't.
flamencoprof: So sorry to hear that .. I've been divorced too .. and it hurt! But it was for the best and we've stayed good friends since .. I wish that for you too. Good luck and best wishes, Rosie
Iris's talent if recognised and promoted in the UK as a mainstream artist would make her a superstar. With due respect to Susan boyle and co shows how fickle the record (cd) buying public are today.

Iris is such an unassuming, low key, non-threatening person always willing to play the supportive role. It is a wonder that she has survived so long in this egomaniacal industry. I love her voice. Looking forward to her show in Montreal on Sunday
This has to be one of my all-time favourite songs. Jacqui does a lovely job with Iris, in the wings but watchful and encouraging .. all understated and so sweet. Thanks to Marty and Del for letting me know that this track is on the Liar's Bar (blue) CD. I'm trying to buy it as we speak. Thanx guys!
jackie also did "your loving arms" with the london gospel community choir in the same concert but i cant find it anywhere....:( anyone got it pls post
Jacqui did a lovely job on Iris' classic .. wish I could find a recording so I could listen on my car CD. Well done ladies and thank you Hiram for posting!

Oh man, this is just beautiful! Two musical obsessions of mine from totally different genres coming together. Thanks for posting ths. By the way, what Beautiful South tune did Iris cover?
Excellent, thanks for posting. Have not heard this one before. The Beautiful South are good, but Iris stands in a league of her own, that voice sends shivers down my spine. Thanks again
Hiram! i have been tryin to get this song for over 11 years i recorded the show on video at the time but lost the video and tried every imagainable for this song.how did you find it?? Thank you for posting this!!!!
I taped it at the time. The whole show was released on vhs 'Much Later With Beautiful South' unless I am mistaken it includes Iris singing 'Bell Bottom Tear'.
I'd only ever heard Iris do this song, and I've always loved it. Then I found this version - it made me weep. Thank you sooooo very much.

Excellent, thanks for posting. Have not heard this one before. The Beautiful South are good, but Iris stands in a league of her own, that voice sends shivers down my spine. Thanks again

I taped it at the time. The whole show was released on vhs 'Much Later With Beautiful South' unless I am mistaken it includes Iris singing 'Bell Bottom Tear'.
