  • I'd only ever heard Iris do this song, and I've always loved it. Then I found this version - it made me weep. Thank you sooooo very much.

  • Some smart people out there, to put this together,,it is excellent, Thank you

  • Not forgetting Iris...who always delivers with that haunting voice. As a pairing it doesn't get much better

  • Iris DeMent is simply a musical Shakespeare with a voice that evokes all the happiness and pain we experience in life. And as for Jacqueline's rendition, well they've "done nothing wrong"...

  • Superbly crafted song

  • Iris Dement's lyrics so full of passion and honesty.

  • I agree with balmainguy's comment, just stumbled across this and was delighted. Thanks poster.

  • 2 excellent singers

  • love you Iris!!!

  • This is why I love YT.... You can ramble from one clip to another, then stumble upon something really great.... like this.

  • Somebody has TwoUselessEars and OneUselessHeart

  • bloody hell - knock out clip

  • Wow!!

  • one of my favourite Iris de Ment songs, even if it makes me cry everytime - beau

    tiful rendtion

  • Beautiful. Art at is very best.

  • Outstanding , totally faultless

  • Gorgeous...no other word. both the vocals and the woman. Come back Jackie we all miss your magnificent voice

  • @twouselesslegs she has only been making music for longer than you prolly been alive

  • Iris Dement is a national treasure. A voice that resonates with the joy and the pain we have all felt.

  • I never heard this before, Jacqueline Abbott go to America and the Opry is all your´s, what a fabulous country singer you are.

  • Did Iris DeMent sing a song called Walkin Home?? I hope someone can answer. Thank you.

  • Boy they don't half complement each other do they, beautifully sung Jackie

  • @TwoUselesslegs must be a Lady GaGa fan...

  • @TheMomob4 - Hardly a fan of music at all. Still, I find Lady Gaga does NOT sing through her NOSE. Which makes her infinitely more talented than the shrill and discordant Iris Dement.

  • @TwoUselessLegs Heh,heh......I beg ta differ......somethin wrong with yer ears.......

  • useless if you dont like her music stop by god watching her videos and let the rest of us enjoy it.If we wanted to listen to you we would watch your crap.

  • Twouselesslegs, you're one useless cunt. Now, Fuck off.

  • Ugh! That HONK of hers! Little wonder the Cohen Brothers lost the Oscar!

  • @TwoUselessLegs If God produced a team of assholes you would be on big wages for every game.

  • So THIS is the woman who single handedly ruined the Cohen Brother's fine film "True Grit"? My goodness, I've never known of anybody who sings from their NOSE who wasn't named Al Falfa.

  • @TwoUselessLegs ... sure that ID ain't "TwoUselessEars"? (c:

  • This is so special, Jackie Abbott and Iris Dement singing together, will probably never happen again.

  • thanks for this excellent upload.

  • Very beautiful and poignant - thanx

  • Perfect, yes, the best.

  • Shook hands with Iris at a Cardiff concert, lovely lady, would`ve hugged her, but I didn`t want her coming onto me....funny age!

  • @DOMINIC7726 one sentence from you and i can tell you are a huge piece of shit. Drop dead scumbag, fuck yourself with an ice skate.

  • Shook hands with Iris at a Cardiff concert, lovely lady, would`ve hugged her, but I didn`t want her coming onto me!

  • I like how Paul skeptically says "I wish you luck Jacqui" and then she more than knock it out of the park but into frickin' orbit!!!

Well done Jacqui... you melt my heart.

  • Something special indeed! Thanks for posting.

  • sad love song

  • these ladies are unknown in my country, but they are amazing.Regards from Buenos Aires,Argentina

  • has anybody got jacquie singing loving arms from this show it was later with jools holland and pauls liars bar blooper added a bit of realism to the song ha ha

  • @ayefondkiss Yes, Loving Arms was the best! I've got it somewhere.

  • Iris has the voice to tear you heart out when singing this song, Jacqueline although a great voice just cant put the emotion into this that it requires she just sings the words.

It takes something else , something special to get deep into the emotions of country lyrics.

  • Wow, beautiful

  • Thank you for this its so special beautiful vocals

  • Fantastic! Thank you SOOOOOO much!!!!

  • pure rubbish!!

  • i think Jacqui's has a fantastic voice. Wonder what she is doing now since she split with the band? She was the best female vocalist the band EVER had. To think she was at a party and the lead vocalist of The Beautiful South happened to be there and he heard her singing and knew right away she would be a great vocalist with the band - how right was he??

  • This is so bautiful fills the heart, wish Jacqui had more stuff available

  • Once again a thank you both Jacqueline, & Iris. I have enjoyed well sung Country songs all my life, and heard, and seen many performer's. In my book you are at the top of all. Thank's once again RockyDon H

Come on down to little New Zealand sometime, we'd love to have you for a song and a cuppa

  • great song! beautiful!

  • Great contrasting styles in these two artist! If one can appreciate both, then you have become a lover of music without a label. Great stuff from both these talented gals!!

  • @coleyman1

Well said - more or less what I posted - though mine has "a slant " towards Jacqui's style.

Watch for the drive by shooting artist known as ACEHOLE - he's a bit biased, and closed minded, this sort of thing happens when you never venture out of your own county, never mind your own country.

    Cheers coleyman1.

  • @Veee8 Thanks.. I find it almost insulting how some people care more about an artist's background, nationality, skin color, or their looks and then use those things to judge their art! The great thing about music is you can enjoy it with your eyes closed and never knowing the artist. Have a great day Veee8!!

  • I love them, the Song, Iris and Jaqueline

  • Iris's voice sounds formed from the Grand Ol' Opry with that distinct southern twang, almost cliche - it's nice in its own way but nothing compared to Jacqui's smooth velvety delivery, Jacqui's voice has a thick coat of butter all over it...hm, hmm, hmmmmmm.

  • @Veee8 Fuck jacqui. Where do you think she got something to rip off from? You're a fuckin Brit, aren't you. "Almost cliche," fuck you. Jacqui sounds like a million other bitches singing in American karoke bars. Big fuckin deal. Iris has a signature that no other woman could ever dream of matching. In America, we covet individualism, not popular perfection. You wanna talk "cliche" look up whatshername's vocals. Why does Europe fuckin BLOW so much? 'God kill the Queen, as long as you take Obama!"

  • @ACEHOLETHIRTEEN

Are you forming a new party?

I adore freedom of opinion - thanks or yours.

  • @ACEHOLETHIRTEEN

Sorry for the typo - you may have a hard time filling in the blanks....I meant to say "thanks for your opinion"

  • @Veee8 You must not be American or from the Ozark area of the U.S. Otherwise, you could hear that Iris' accent and voice are authentic and not some commercially developed artifact. Everyone has his/her rights to preferences, but Iris is an American original and, in my opinion, no one comes close to her interpretations of her own songs. I am glad to hear someone else try and Jacqui gives it a good shot.

  • @Veee8 ---Iris' accent is a particular accent, it is from Arkansas. The Grand Ol' Opry has no particular sound as many artists come from many parts of the Southland and sing. But if you listen there are particulars from different areas. What is gorgeous about Iris is that there is a quality of realism, pain and hope all in the same note with a sweet quality and deepness that no other artist can put forth. There is something about this woman that is amazing.

  • @aplainchristian

I agree, Iris has a realism to her singing and writing that is truly heartfelt - lovely all the same but not my preference...I prefer the smoky, sultry, breathy, buttery smoooooth delivery of Jacqu. Her style is far more "versatile" for Jazz, Blue, rock, pop, gospel, whichever she chooses, She is truly UNDERRATED. I like Gwen Farclas "top rated" comment for this post "This is a bit special, isn't it?...and that about sums it up.

    eom V8

  • @aplainchristian I agree , Iris has the ability ( as George jones sang ) to tear your heart out when she sings, and it seems to be intrinsic in her, built deep in her soul, she is amazing .

  • Dave here. While I find Iris adorable, I think Jacquie's voice would've sounded better on "Our Town." Mellower. Not so shrill. Still, the plaintiveness in Iris' voice did fit the final scene in "Northern Exposure" very well. Be well Dear Hearts.

  • Saw Iris in Denver once on Colfax Ave while going to Metro State - she's a treat for sure. Especially if you come from a little farm and relate to her lyrics.

  • Jackie Abbott is a very versatile singer. I love the way she beats Iris Dement at her own game, while still having to read the words from a sheet handed to her 30 mins earlier. Yet she always looks uncomfortable with her own ability.

I remember the BBC Jools Holland Special (from which this came) very well. Jackie did a great version of Loving Arms with a gospel choir.

Please post it if you have it.

    Thanks for this.

  • @Gangly1

Wonderful observation - Jacqui just started to hit her stride but it never quite came across as truly confident - you are so right.

From her killer glances at the camera in "Don't Marry Her" then she'd look away just "a beat" too soon, but it worked!... she is truly wonderful and I wouldn't have her any other way. Cheers.

  • @Veee8 I rarely make wonderful observations while playing Poker at the same time!!

I have huge respect for her unassuming nature and tremendous talent.

I just found Loving Arms (but the cd version) . Still v v good. It is in my favs if you can't find it.

    Cheers.

  • wonderful video and song !!!

    Thanks a lot

    God Bless Youi

    best greetings from Austria

    ~Ernesto...

  • fantastic song, jacque sings it well.....brings a lot of memories back....a real tear magnet this song love it.

  • iris makes everyone look good. not that this lady needs it. she's a real class act herself

  • my daughter loved this song and my little grandaughter, age 9 at the time, loved it too, cause her mom did. Now my daughter has passed away and my grandaughter was kidnapped at the funeral by an estranged distant relative.

And now i hear this song, i i feel, oh how i feel.

  • Reading your story and listening to this song at the same time brought a lump to my throat. The song has a history for me, too, but it's pathetic compared to your story.

I understand, not how you feel - I wouldn't be that patronising - but how this song must touch you. My heart goes out to you.

  • Z iris, you go Z

  • What a beautiful rendition, you can hear the great high lonesome "hill country" of Iris echoed in it perfectly...wonderful job.

  • Makes me lonesome for something I think I had...but maybe I didn;'t,

  • you dont want it beleive me...

  • What a Treat! I'm also facinated by Jools piano playing, possibly he's never heard the song before, but he gains in confidence as the song progresses and plays brilliantly! Thanks HiramHubbard for sharing!

  • I feel touched by this song. It reminds me of something that I lost along time ago, but can't place what it was. I just remember the feeling.

  • Where is Iris Dement from?

  • Iris was born near Paraqould, Arkansa but grew up in California

  • I'm not even breaking up with anyone but this makes me feel sad; it's beautifully sung and so touching!

  • What a beautiful breakup/divorce song. My wife and I both used to cry listening to it before we broke up without ever admitting to each other that it said what we couldn't.

  • flamencoprof: So sorry to hear that .. I've been divorced too .. and it hurt! But it was for the best and we've stayed good friends since .. I wish that for you too. Good luck and best wishes, Rosie

  • Iris's talent if recognised and promoted in the UK as a mainstream artist would make her a superstar. With due respect to Susan boyle and co shows how fickle the record (cd) buying public are today.

  • so true your sentiments we love iris in our house

  • This is just so perfectly beautiful......

  • @deadluvva

    Yes.....

  • :-)

  • Like the Beu_Sot and like Iris - think they could do more together ... what a nice sound :) 5*

  • I had forgotten how much I enjoy Iris DeMent--her CDs are in a case I've misplaced (duh). This is also the first time I've heard "Jackie" or The Beautiful South recording session -- amazing talent here!

  • the minute i seen this i had to watch it. although i dohnt like the beu south , but love iris .

  • Iris is such an unassuming, low key, non-threatening person always willing to play the supportive role. It is a wonder that she has survived so long in this egomaniacal industry. I love her voice. Looking forward to her show in Montreal on Sunday

  • What a beautiful sound girls :) 5*

  • This is a bit special,isn't it?

  • @GwenFarclas It certainley is,I doubt if it will ever be repeated. Jackie Abbott and Iris Demont doing a duet - WOW a moment to treasure.

  • @GwenFarclas It certainly is.

  • Can someone please post the link to an mp3 of this version? The album (Liar's Bar) is out of production. Thanks in anticipation! Rosie

  • This has to be one of my all-time favourite songs. Jacqui does a lovely job with Iris, in the wings but watchful and encouraging .. all understated and so sweet. Thanks to Marty and Del for letting me know that this track is on the Liar's Bar (blue) CD. I'm trying to buy it as we speak. Thanx guys!

  • Jackie is just fantastic, whatever she sings....

  • jackie also did "your loving arms" with the london gospel community choir in the same concert but i cant find it anywhere....:( anyone got it pls post

  • nice, shes so sexy and she got the best voice ever on any woman i`ve ever heard.

  • Jacqui did a lovely job on Iris' classic .. wish I could find a recording so I could listen on my car CD. Well done ladies and thank you Hiram for posting!

  • Its on the b side of whone of there singles

thats where i first heard it, will look up the single

  • Hey Del, replied to your own email but wanted to thank you for taking the time to look up the single - looking 4ward to hearing from u ..

  • Its the 'BLUE' cover version of a double single release of liars bar, with dumb and you've done nothing wrong taken from 'later with jools'

  • What a lovely voice. Beautiful song. Thanks for posting.

  • She could..and should...have showed Iris some respect by actually learning the song instead of reading the words from a crib sheet.

  • I,ve news for you friend IRIS sang the beautiful south song also from a song sheet as they probably only met on that one day so have some respect for all concerned especially as this was a live show on television!

  • This happens all the time, it is in no way disrespectful. If it were I would be the first to say so because I LOVE Iris and have been a fan for many, many years. peace

  • i believe she is

  • why would you even say that? What does that matter??????? Damn...grow up.

  • Anybody who would ask the question you would ask is inmature, thats all I'm saying, doesn't mean you're not a fine lad. You're very young I'm quite certain and you will grow up. At least you have in music. Peace!

  • Yeah, me too. I was wondering if there was any original stuff on from Greaves.

  • Jacqui Abbott is well hot. what a voice aswell

  • 2 beautiful voices

  • fine duet, i been listening to iris for a long time but my first time to hear jacqui, she is real good

  • Jacqui has such a beautiful voice. I am not partial to Iris' very branded voice, but she writes some wonderful songs.

  • this is what heaven sounds like

  • I would not go as far as that but Jacquiline Aboot sounds superb.

  • Iris also sang a song on this show called something like 'this is the game that you played'????????????? is there anyone out there that has it?

  • Hi - it's a Beautiful South song called "Bell Bottomed Tear" - Iris cleaned up the words a little!

  • Dont call them beautiful for nothing,Love them and Iris,Top of their game. Many thanks.

  • Had this taped also from original show and have checked over the years to see if it would ever be posted.. great song and 2 great singers.. Many Many thanks for posting.

  • Oh man, this is just beautiful! Two musical obsessions of mine from totally different genres coming together. Thanks for posting ths. By the way, what Beautiful South tune did Iris cover?

  • I accidentally lost this track from my computer, and it is sooooooooooooooo nice to hear it again, and not just that but see it!!!

  • Excellent, thanks for posting. Have not heard this one before. The Beautiful South are good, but Iris stands in a league of her own, that voice sends shivers down my spine. Thanks again

  • wonderful performance!

  • Hiram! i have been tryin to get this song for over 11 years i recorded the show on video at the time but lost the video and tried every imagainable for this song.how did you find it?? Thank you for posting this!!!!
