it's obvious he's just doing it to be funny people...you can relax with the male femininity bullshit. if he was being serious, i highly doubt 1. he'd make those facial expressions...2. he woulda wore boxers that were shorter than the dress rather than longer, and 3. wouldn't he look a bit more offput or upset if they were all laughing at him when he's trying to be serious? yeah...people really need to think before they come to irrational conclusions and open their mouths.
Imagine this whole performance except replace the kid with a girl, and try to see in what way they were making fun of Annie. And if your response is that it was funny 'because it was a boy' then you've proven my point.
@whyiaskyou79 The reason it's hard for boys and men to express feminine qualities is because being a woman/girl is still seen as negative, so for a man/boy to be "like a woman" is to be weaker, more emotional/less rational, and less capable.
However, I'm pretty sure he was goofing off for the strike party and wasn't being serious. He wanted to get laughs.
This kid is really talented, but I'm pretty sure he was playing it for laughs. It was at the strike party where everyone is goofing off, not at an actual performance.
id just like to make a point here, i performed in the professional show of Billy Elliot the musical in Australia and i played the role of michael, Billys FEMININE BEST FRIEND where every night i dressed in a dress and tutu. i played this role everyday performing to audiences and you know what, i got the reaction that this kid got and they were paying to see the show not one person/fan i ever spoke to said they were offended by the role or the way i interoperated it. as i theatre kid, good on you
Guys, guys! This was meant to be a joke! That is why they built it up so much at the beginning. This was a school production, and as a joke they got him to volunteer to put the Annie costume on! All those people laughing are his friends, he did this for a joke and I think he sold it great! Obviously if this was serious and he was actually playing Annie than it wouldn't be a laughing matter, but the whole thing was a big joke.
i do not find dis funny at all,i know i laugh at alot of stuff (ask my friends, even though u dont know them) but i dont find dis funny at all cuz my school is having the play annie and my friend(he's a guy) always gets laughed at when he sings,he's not annie but he's oliver, but there are people behind who always laugh at him,but now he just told me that he got in disney auditions,i feel happy for him,he's not on tv yet though, but once he will, those people who laugh at him will now be guilt
@whyiaskyou79 Have you ever been in theater? This was a strike party- which means the show is over. Everyone there knows each other. That whole performance was inside jokes, like the stage manager shooing the strikers off set, and the two girls who are right by her side. Inside jokes. Tomorrow is generally considered among theater ppl as being a very annoying song, that's why he is singing it. They are laughing because he is goofing off. You don't need to make politics about everything.
Yes, I was throughout high school and university. I don't make politics about everything. When I see room for improvement in the maturity level of people, such that others can be comfortable in their own skin, I think it's good to mention it. So that's what I did. Don't kid yourself that the audience is laughing because it's an 'annoying song'. You're telling me that if had sung it in a t-shirt and jeans, the audience would still be in hysterics? Get real.
lol. I'm actually regarded by most people I know to be 'the funniest person they know', but I doubt you'll believe that, and I wouldn't expect you to. Honestly, I don't mean to crap all over this video. I understand that this kid wasn't trying to be taken seriously. But it still does illustrate the current negative attitude toward femininity in males among the general population. A lot of guys could be more comfortable with who they are if these people grew up
@whyiaskyou79 why do you have to blow things out of proportion. they're are obviously laughing because they know the guy and he obviously doesn't normally wear dresses and anyway its mainly cheering going on and all the laughter sounds happy not negative. cool story about your life though..... try writing a book next time?
I'm not blowing things out of proportion. I feel bad for boys/guys who get mocked for being feminine. In this instance, yeah, the crowd clearly sees this as atypical for the kid. But it just sends a message that laughing at boys gender-bending is totally acceptable. And I'd bet money that any boy dressed as a girl, regardless of whether the crowd knew him or not, would receive a similar reaction.
Didn't give a life story..gave an anecdote to convey my point.
As I've already explained this before to xantoniaxxx below, the fact that it is considered a joke is what illustrates my point perfectly.
I've gone to plays where girls have played Peter Pan, Oliver Twist, and Pinocchio, and the reaction from the crowd was in no way similar to what you see here.
@whyiaskyou79 Yes but it is actually traditional for girls to play such roles as Peter Pan. It was originally played by a girl. Also like others have pointed out it is either a strike party or it is at the end of the show and is a joke. I don't think he was playing Annie throughout the show.
So what that it's traditional? That's a cop-out. On another note, the common practice in ancient Greece was for young men to play the roles of women in theater. As far as tradition goes, you could just as well say that it's 'traditional' in many cultures for men to only be masculine, and thus to ridicule men who are feminine is just a result of that tradition. Doesn't make it right.
@whyiaskyou79 true. but he's having fun! look at the kid does he look hurt or upset that everyones laughing at him? no he is enjoying it! he wants a laugh! I'l dance around and pretend to be a dude all the time because it gets a laugh! he's trying to entertain everyone and that's what he's doing!! I applaud him
@whyiaskyou79 Um... it was supposed to be a joke. That's why they were building it up in the beginning. He was trying to be funny. And the audience liked it.
Ok, you're like the third person who has responded saying it's 'supposed to be a joke'. The point I'm making is that MERELY a boy doing a girl's role was considered a joke.
It's not like he performed stand-up...and yet the audience had this reaction.
Not a good message for boys who possess feminine qualities and wish they could express them, in the same way that girls who possess masculine qualities (tomboys) can do so w/o being made fun of.
@whyiaskyou79 The audience had this reaction because they knew this kid and to see him performing ANNIE was funny to them. If this were Broadway, the audience probably would not have had the same reaction.
I think the root of your frustration is the fact that you think it's alright for boys to possess feminine qualities. Unfortunately you're taking this video out of context to bring conflict to an innocent matter.
I understand what you're saying, but I stand by my original point. I know that they 'knew' him, and that's why they had the reaction they did. I don't know how more clear I could be though...the fact that feminine males have the stigma to begin with is what I find unfortunate. Today an old friend accidently pushed my dog down the stairs and she broke her leg. We rushed her to the vet and she was given a big pink cast and was put on a bunch of medication. I have been crushed all day but this literally just completely changed my mood! I couldn't stop laughing and smiling
why do people judge on what people wear that should not matter if a guy is more comfortable in girls clothes then let him wear them like wise if a girl like to dress as a boy let them it not hurting anything or anybody just there alot of haters who cant understand what it feels to be that way

I felt the audience was really disrespectful.
Such a double standard. If a girl had played Oliver Twist, doubtful she'd be getting laughed at the whole song.
Granted, I don't know this kid. Maybe he was expecting the response he received.
He did a great job. The laughter just keeps alive the idea that it's shameful/ silly for boys to be feminine.
As a tomboy growing up, I had no such blatantly rude reactions from ppl.
I feel bad that it's harder for boys and men to express feminine qualities.

I don't think you understand what I'm saying.
The fact that it WAS meant to be a joke is exactly my point.
Boys being feminine is ridiculed. Girls being masculine, typically are not.
I will say that in uber-conservative areas, yes, both 'gender-bending' boys and girls are looked down upon.
But in Anywhere, USA, people view girls possessing masculine qualities as fine, and boys possessing feminine qualities as wrong and shameful.
Understand?

Today an old friend accidently pushed my dog down the stairs and she broke her leg. We rushed her to the vet and she was given a big pink cast and was put on a bunch of medication. I have been crushed all day but this literally just completely changed my mood! I couldn't stop laughing and smiling

why do people judge on what people wear that should not matter if a guy is more comfortable in girls clothes then let him wear them like wise if a girl like to dress as a boy let them it not hurting anything or anybody just there alot of haters who cant understand what it feels to be that way
