I saw this movie yesterday. For me it was a way too much directed to the US-Americans. They never spoke about saving the environment, nature, planet, humanity... Just about saving the USA and its environment and nature. I think that environmental pollution and destruction doesnt matter to most of the people in the movie, if it occurs somewhere outside the US borders...
@pwd92 Because the movie is set in America and about the community. The only reason we want to live with zero footprint and protect nature is so we aren't fucking wiped out, smart guy.
@rdboy10 how can you say this is a libertarian business climate? Are you insane? This kind of shit is pretty much the exact opposite of what you stated, I've never seen such a political business structure in all of my life as I have in the last ten years. Mainly in part to Clinton signing his free trade agreement while in office.
Thanks to the libertarian business climate, companies are happily moving jobs abroad, lowering wages, worsening working conditions
Since natural resources are accounted as free gains and pollution isn't counted against the bottom line, business on its own will grab resources and pollute till an environment is destroyed
The food business, on its own, will put filth in our food and lie about what it's made of
Business will create unsafe goods, endanger workers, profit in times of crises
For another documentary that you can watch online and that tackles Massey Energy and Mountain Top Removal watch Recreating Consciousness - Coal Consciousness - Part 6 it deals with the same issues and is really compelling.
@theliberator1: The US IS a very intelligent country...The fact that corporate greed choose not to apply those intelligence is another question all together. And sadly the mantra of "Drill Baby Drill" is sipping in faster than any environmental movie can be made (I guess it is in the tea serve by the party :D ).
the company, massey, has been taken over by alpha. i don't know don blankenship's role in this new company, if any, but it will stay mostly non-union.
the situation is still horrible and needs continuous investigation.
@TheLegendOfTroll no u fckn idiot its not just about coal. its about wats right, this doc is about our present n future, its about breaking down big companies that think they can go out rape the environment, break laws, cause illness to many people and think they can get away with.
It's not just about the environment at this point. It is about the health of our people, the safety of our kids, and the fair treatment of citizens of this country.
Ths is a powerful story that is both disturbing and inspiring. Bravo to the fil makers and the people of West Virginia for having the courage to stand up to Massey Coal and their short term profit motives at the expense of everything else. I highly encourage you to watch the trailer to see how moving it is (we just watched it twice!) then find out where it is playing and bring your friends to learn about this modern American tale which can end in tragedy or glory.
ive lived around coal all my life. glad to see somebody is finally speaking up about it (with a voice loud enough to be heard that is). no surprise its a Kennedy. the Kennedy's have done a lot of good for this country.
all the stuff mentioned here is stuff that i already knew though.
i hope you can put a stop to it. somebody needs to.
@Dahak753 That "somebody" who can put a stop to this is us. The problem is that people want democracy...and democracy is something that should have faded away centuries ago. The solution is simple, but requires drastic changes in our society. Watch this video, an interview with Jacque Fresco: watch?v=4qlgzTlAvOo
Great Movie. One quick quesstion for Mr. KENNEDY: HOW DID YOUR FAMILY GET THE PLANNED WIND FARM OFF THE COAST OF HYANIS PORT STOPPED SO THAT THE KENNEDY'S PRISTINE VIEW OF THE OCEAN WOULDN'T BE DESTROYED??????
@oberonave Sadly, some of the Kennedys did try to stop Cape Wind, but thankfully it is happening - thanks to the tenacity and willingness to invest in a dream that Jim Gordon has shown for over 10 years!
EXTRAORDINARY. This movie is extraordinary. But I'm not sure people WILL stand up and do something while Nature is ripped to shreds by the soulless corporate dead things. A corp is a dead thing. Not an individual, but the law treats the corp as a person with rights. It has no right to take away every good thing from every American. Sad. Until brave people step forward. Like the people for this mountain.
If you've never seen this film from 1941, it echos in time. It's not up to "the government" to stop this monster. WE are "the government." WE let this happen.
WE'VE been complacient, disconnected. It is OUR responsibility-NOT that of others to make the calls, write the letters. Find your Reps and bug the hell out of them!
If the coal companies were forced through legeslation or judicial decree to have to build a mountain in place where they took one away, their operation would not be so profitable and soon they would decide to conduct business in a new field. i know this only addresses one of the many problems of coal mineing, but rain water is manytimes dependant on the mountains acting as a big condensor for moisture in the air, without them rain fall can be reduced significantly, your best bet is in courts.
i know know most people are generally against violence but as we've asked them to stop their violence against us continually and they're killing us and poisoning the wells, destroying mountains it took millions of years for earth to make... would it not be unreasonable to kill them? to shoot the CEO, and board members? what else are we supposed to do? lose our lifetimes buried in paper work to no effect? protest? write letters? i've done that all my life. game over. fuckers must stop. thoughts?
Let me guess? THe United States is the bad guys, just like every other docu'fckn'mentaries that's I've seen. Jesus fckn christ, why not just kill every congressman for crying out loud. God.
"the United States is the bad guys" isn't that helpful... but yeah... it would appear all the people at the top are all corrupt... otherwise you can't get to the top. and yeah... we may have to kill them. we've spent decades 'asking' them to do right.
@caseyforever They're all corrupt. These are the people that you guys elect (wethered be democrat or republican). Instead of just bitchin' all the time(which obviously won't work), why not just kill em' all, no?
i don't disagree but at the same time there needs to be some mentality around what we want instead. i'm actually working on that. may i suggest you look up Derrick Jensen's 20 premises. it's for the book 'endgame' (two volumes). you can read a lot of it online. but check out the premises and tell me what you think... then check out derrick on youtube. i'm mentioning him because he's the only person we've found so far with a lot of info already out about the subject.
kill them and then we'll get who instead? Your predecessors worked to create institutions that avoid corruption, represent you and facilitate good decision making. Their job's not finished. Buy you can do something.
those mother fucking son of a bitches the lord should punish those who destroy what we love most and thats mother nature we all love mother nature even in the deepest of those whos hearts are as cold as stone there is still love
We live in an intelligent country? Now that is lack of self knowledge if anything. Also, wind power is by no means a realistic alternative, the mountains you need to disintegrate just to make the concrete I suppose is someone elses back yard...

Its CEO should be tried for manslaughter and crimes against humanity.
