I'm not sure what you mean by a death aria. The poetry reflects her broken heart. The theme is used throughout the opera whenever the nosegay of flowers is mentioned. I know the score very well, and I don't need a translation. I was just pointing out that she is not yet sick from the poison in case you were in some way confused.
Scostatevi, profani!!!!! This is simply exquisite. The only pianissimo that's not traditional is the one towards the end in "senza ritorno," and she more than makes up for it in sheer intensity. The tempo is quite self-indulgent, yes, but when one can spin out that endless, impeccable line, who cares? seriously.
but this IS a "death" aria! Here is my poor translation: "Poor flowers, gems of the fields only born yesterday and today dying- like the oaths of an unfaithful heart! Last kiss, or the first kiss, here I imprint, gentle or strong, kiss of death, kiss of love. All is finished! With the scent of death, despised; with you one day without returning, end of mistakes- ALL IS FINISHED!" These are poisoned flowers that her rival sends to her to kill her that she thought Maurizio sent- it's a death aria!
you r right it 'is' her last will and testiment. For someone who knows the score so well you would think that 'esultat' knew what the composer meant. ha!
I would agree that Mirella's is better. This is a "death" aria, but there should be some power to certain parts of the phrases. While I simply adore, love and worship Caballé's pianissimos- they don't belong everywhere. She takes the beginning of the aria so slowly, the orchestra/conductor almost don't know what to do. The sounds & pianissimos are lovely, but not for this aria. Liù- now THAT is Caballé's crowning role. It was written to have her sing it. I never sing those arias because of her.

I absolutely agree. She overexplotes her very strong side - pianissimi - and the tempo is annoyingly slow, the orchestra is alsmost lost. The tearing dramatism and dispair are blurred due to lack of dynamic variations.
Well I'm pleased to see that 1) someone agrees with me and 2) I didn't get torn-up for expressing what some may consider a "dissenting" opinion. Lord above knows that I esteem her pianissimi (you are correct on that spelling... me americanizing it "pianissimos" I should know better!) while I greatly esteem this ability of hers, you are correct, it can make for a lack of dynamic variations is used too much. Had she used it more judiciously, this could've been breath-taking! :)

Con el primer pianissimi que dio ya me dejó drogada para el resto del aria y no pude enterarme de nada.. todavía tengo los vellos erizados...wooooooo @@
To her heavenly voice Caballé adds a moving and delicate phrasing of utmost beauty. It's heartfelt and also shows excellent taste in the use of dramatic effects. Brava!
I happened to attend a performance in Naples in 1978.. There was a radio live broadcast so public didn't clap after the first aria. After Poveri Fiori the audience erupted! The director tried to restart the orchestra but he was stopper by cheers and claps .. A voice said "Leave us clapping, she is a great artist"!!!!
NO. I was wrong. There´s not a better rendition of this aria, the legato in the last part is impecable, the pianissimi are sublime. brava, brava, brava.

This is not a death aria. She feels fine until after the love duet with Maurizio. The poison takes 15 minutes to take effect.

Thank you puccinislarondine for a more than satisfactory translation. I feel I now I have
a new undersanding of the emotional intensity
of this scene. The deeper meaning, now revealed to the audience before Adriana fully grasps her end is upon her. Grazie.
