@RunLikeAFilly my friend has that too. he's a TB/Paint and he's mostly black, except for like, 5 or 6 little white spots. he get extreamly black in the late spring/early-mid fall, but when winter hits, he gets very brown. the white on him makes him look even browner too

Someone bought her a horse and gave it to her for Christmas, therefore the horse was a *present*. That horse is definitely black. A trademark for a bay, no matter the shade, is that their nose is always light. This horse quite clearly has a black nose.

Some people obviously know nothing about horses. Sun can bleach horse hair just as it can bleach human hair. My bay TB's tail is horribly bleached and it looks almost light brown in places (causing the barn owner to label him as dun on his stall tag).

I don't know heaps about horses, but I do know about genetics, it makes up a major part of my Uni degree. He does look a black to me and it's not unusual to see red hairs in black animals and its also not unusual for black to appear brown on lightening due to the sun. Also, he has a dark mouth not a light mouth which is where you can properly see he's genetically black . . .

Her horse is black. I ride him all the time. And seriously I don't think the owners would put the wrong color on his papers. Another thing is that where we live the sun is a lot stronger and powerful because we don't have a lot of polution in our air so the UV rays are a lot stronger. The same thing happens to my hait. @023horselvr Don't take people's jealous criticism too seriously, horses just tend to get lighter as they age, Blaze was probably born black and got more "brown" in his coat over time.

I don't mean any offense, but that horse IS a bay. Brown body and black points on legs indicate so, and he wouldn't be sun bleached in the middle of winter. Adorable Appaloosa regardless though. You're a lucky girl! :)
@lilacwinteraire515 i had a project pony in 2010 that was a black and white paint whos winter coat got extremely sun bleached ! when he shed out he was black so there is no denying the fact that the sun can bleach a horse anytime of year. And even sooner depending on where you live in the world.
yes there are true blacks, hence fresians are true blacks, there are true black quarter horses too, not all horses born black fade to gray or bay. Google it lol. Your horse is beautiful, dont let other's non-sense get you down :) What an awesome christmas present!
lol they dont always stay the color there born as ether. my aunts horse was black tell he was 4 almost 5. Then he started to change to gray. by the time he died at 29 his fur was so white you wouldn't know he started out black.

Also, the more you keep a horse out of the sun, the darker their coat will be. yes it is true that horses can change color as they age but when the color change is due to the sun they dont see that as a true color change. if the horse was kept stalled or blanketed the color would return to its natural darker state..

@HorseLvrrx3 As far as you know. I'm ridiculously obsessed with horse genetics. Pure blacks can have white markings (I've known a jet black with a blaze). @023horselvr My horse is a black bay but yeah, the sun does bleach them. :P It looked really finny when he was a baby, but now he looks really nice even if he's bleached. He's just plain beautiful! Just like your horse!!!! I hope you're doing well with him!!!!!
@cazaschobs don't tell people how to ride. It's offending and rude. when your taking a picture on a horse, you don't need to obtain correct riding stance 24/7 on the animal... think about what your going to say before you type it.

@MissEquineBabe tips from me to you is have the original owner ride him first.. !! that was you can see how he moves and if theres any prblems with his legs...then you get on him and ride him. My horse was a complete surprise but we connected instantly.. !! When i ride him its like we r one and thats wat everyone tells me.. !! :) good luck
@MissEquineBabe i think that you should go and see the horse, then if you really like the horse MAKE SURE YOU GET HIM/HER CHECKED BY THE VET my cousin didnt and he went crazy when they took him to their barn. (they think he was sedated when they saw him for the first time at the owners barn) it all turned out ok thnk goodness but u should still make sure you get the vet to check the horse out

the agouti gene is the modifier that causes a black based horse to be bay. Brown is a different version of the gene that turns black horses bay.

No offense but how are you going to tell me what my horse is.. i look at him everyday and hes black its called the sun it bleaches hair my hairs red but its got blonde in it From the sun he registered as a BLACK horse k thanks though

@SkulduggeryVos no, i did NOT say that. I said that if a horse has a black coat but has white marking it is considered brown. I never said he couldnt be bay :/

@HorseLvrrx3 As far as you know. I'm ridiculously obsessed with horse genetics. Pure blacks can have white markings (I've known a jet black with a blaze). It is very likely that her horse is not a jet black and simply fades in the sun like most dark horses. (and your previous post was not clear, which is why I made that comment)

not meaning to sound mean or whatever but why is it that it's always the kid who gets a horse but their family already has horses? what about the kids that didnt get to grow up with horses? i wanna see those kids get horses, cause thats the situation im in. We have the space for one but everyone says its too expensive. they dont see all of the good things that come out of owning a horse. Does anyone else see what im saying?

Learn how to hold a leadrope properly.
Keep your heels down and shorten your reins.

He is a black horse not a dark bay his skin jus gets sun bleached so I've been keeping his fly sheet on him so he keeps the black color

@023horselvr My horse is a black bay but yeah, the sun does bleach them. :P It looked really finny when he was a baby, but now he looks really nice even if he's bleached. He's just plain beautiful! Just like your horse!!!! I hope you're doing well with him!!!!!

Actually, your beautiful horse is a Dark Bay, not a Black. You can tell by the fact that he has brown on him.

@cazaschobs don't tell people how to ride. It's offending and rude. when your taking a picture on a horse, you don't need to obtain correct riding stance 24/7 on the animal... think about what your going to say before you type it.

oh you are sooo lucky, really that is all I was wishing for this year, sadly we can't afford one, but my aunt says in a year and a half that we should be going horse hunting! AHHHHH now I guess riding is the only thing keeping me sane right now, good luck with you and your new horsie! :D

@MissEquineBabe tips from me to you is have the original owner ride him first.. !! that was you can see how he moves and if theres any prblems with his legs...then you get on him and ride him. My horse was a complete surprise but we connected instantly.. !! When i ride him its like we r one and thats wat everyone tells me.. !! :) good luck

@MissEquineBabe i think that you should go and see the horse, then if you really like the horse MAKE SURE YOU GET HIM/HER CHECKED BY THE VET my cousin didnt and he went crazy when they took him to their barn. (they think he was sedated when they saw him for the first time at the owners barn) it all turned out ok thnk goodness but u should still make sure you get the vet to check the horse out
