Thanks, this is a pretty cool place to watch trains. I shot this with my still camera, thus the reason for the lower quality. This line is not very active a lot of the time, but if you go to the Norfolk Tides game, they start cranking them out. Indeed, I have seen eight trains in four hours during the games.
I should clarify also there was a diamond at South Norfolk where the VGN crossed the N&W. The interlocking building is still there but the tracks were taken up some time just after the N&W/VGN merger. This is how the VGN trains got across to Tidewater and points east in ref. to the comment I posted earlier. This would be the building you see when looking west geographically)across the main when standing by the west leg of the wye at Portlock. Ref:(NL25 Backing Up video)
Hey DRG1939, if Bridge #5 is out-of-service at any given time, would NS be able to use #5a temporarily since there's no other way to get from Lambert's Point to Portlock Yard? Just curious.
Im not sure on that anymore. I heard it was used several years ago (before I hired on) when some major work was done on #5. It may be able to move but in the last 18...Ive never seen it.
Item #2: The NPBL does not come east of Bridge 5. The train you see in the evening with a NPBL locomotive is the NS #NL25. How do I know this..? I work it 2-3 days a week. In other videos I have made reference that the Belt Line leases their locomotives from us and NS paints them out. The Belt only has about 2-3 jobs total that work any given time. We can use these locos at the company discretion. So...even if it has a "Belt Line" engine on the head end doesn't mean its a Belt Line train.
A brief history lesson..The Virginian did not use this bridge. The eastbound passenger trains on the VGN for Norfolk came in on the VGN main and made a diverging route at Tidewater Jct. (now defunct). This now giving them trackage rights over the original NS. The trains pulled into Norfolk's Union Station and then backed all the way to the VGN main at Tidewater when clear of passengers. Then proceeded east to the VGN Sewells Point yard for service. Most of this track is gone or out of service.
It takes time guy....the sad part is, what you see today is half of what used to be out there. A lot of stuff taken up...not used or whatever. Have a great day!
My class is in Portsmouth, but this bridge is in Norfolk. That's close to Portsmouth, though. The single track Bridge #5a used to be used by the Virginian Railway before it was abandoned. It is now strung up by steel cables. The one that the train is passing through (Bridge #5) is still used for coal and empty hopper trains as well as NPBL transfer runs to and from Lambert's Point Coal Docks. This bridge is mostly active in the evening, say around 6:00 PM-8:00 PM.
NICE!

All info is appreciated! Thanks so much! I've been a railfan for almost six years, but I still have a lot to learn. ;)
