I can't explain it. I virtually have every Rosenwinkel recording there is (including lots of bootlegs), but somehow this low quality clip is my favourite kurt solo! It's so organized and logical that it almost sounds written, but at the same time it swings so hard in a way that only pure improvised solos can do.
@ThisIsACleverName i feel exactly the same way! i've seen him live seven times, listened to albums, bootlegs, but there's just something about the way his ideas flow and flow and keeping getting better... and how he makes this old bop tune sound new... it's incredible. this is definitely one of his best recorded solos.

Lots of good notes that say so little...Where are the motifs? The themes? The form? Alas, the melody? The one good line that speaks? What is Rosenwinkel trying to accomplish? I'm just not sure...(btw: don't hate on me for making less than glowing comments).
I guess I'll bite though this seems weird. Kurt has a variety of things happening in every solo and one of them is unbelievable development in his solos which to me is evident in this video and more than evident in his recordings. Of course I dig the chops he has but also how he doesn't always have to use them. Also his chordal language is ridiculous, one only needs one listen to east coast love affair to see that. I don't expect this to persuade you. If its not your thing its not.
i a gree his chordal thing is amazing. the intros he plays live really shocase it. in everything he does actually one great guitarist! i saw him i sat first tabe right in front of him and was floored to put it mildly. east coast love affair is great.
The motifs, the themes, the form, his melodies, the good lines, everything beutiful that he accomplishes (improvisations, songwriting, his work as a bandleader). There you have it :)
I hear you talking man but.. I do respect Kurt and will always come back to his music(which says it all)..he's amazing. It's not the motifs, melody, form etc that missing. To me, what's missing is Bop N Blues and some meaty funk to add to his sophistication. But I am a simple kind of guy, so all these ideas are inspiring me to THINK.. not to dance. I am sure KR wouldn't mind it..that is what is missing-but it wasn't meant to be there.
he uses Moffa guitars as well. He even has one signature model. Check it out on their site. They sound good as hell. I've heard it live. But there's the 'finger factor' as well :)
Onomastic discussion: Rosen means roses, Winkel mean angle (A Winkel means a a small spot... a place). Now one could guess, that Rosenwinkel means something like someone who resides by some roses... most likely this isn't the case. Ros could aswell mean something like horse (h'ros). So his ancesters may just lived near some horse stable and maybe even took care for the horses. So, now that we are all much more educated, we can fully concentrate on this awesome bebop lines Mr. K.R. is playing.
You can always sense when he's heading towards the end of his solo. Especially true when he's playing standards. Check out his other bootlegs - for example with Dario Deidda - Brilliant.
ilikeike87 - agreed. He has set the new standards for modern guitar. For me personally he is the best guitar player that has ever walked the earth. But that's just my opinion.
His name doesnt have to be german, the name Rosenwinkel could also be from Holland, or maybe a polish jewish name? Dont know. He is from Philly, but I dont know about his parents, were they are from. Ask him when you meet him...
His wife is Swiz, at least what I can recall (man, is this a trivial discusion, haha) and I think that was brought up at his former forum. She is an a architect I think. His ancestors might be swedish, but I dont think so. Think he said something about this on some of the bootlegs with him from the Netherlands, cant recall it now though...
Oh yes!
This is a tough tune too!

what kind of pedals he use?

He only uses delay and reverb.
that chorus-y sound is his voice, he has a mic on his shirt usually because he says the singing is part of his sound

Hey there fans. There's another take on old Milestones in audio. Just search for Kurt's bootlegs and it will pop up. It's also great! I recommend it.
