haha its a lot easier when you start at 2 years old like me. i am perfect i want to be a pro and hope that the olympics will add dance (ballet) so i coulkd win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my dream would come true!!!!!!!!
@xXSkrillexLoveXx im also twelve and i just started ballet yesterday :) i was lucky that i was able to go into classes with girls my age! i wish u luck and agree with u to prove them wrong why let them tell you its too late when they dont know what your capable of!
hi, I started dancing ballet when I was 4 and I´m now 14. I wanna be professional dancer some day and I would like to know what I should do next, I had a chance to get a professional dancer some day..? :) I apologize for my bad english
I am 12 (almost 13) and I started ballet 4 months ago and my teacher said I am the most hard working girl in the studio! And I take 6-9 classes a week and help teach the ballet 1 and 1/2 classes! My parents never thought that I would stick to it but here I am in the splits! Never give up if you love it!
I'm starting my FIRST ballet class on Monday.I'm 14,at first I thought I was to old and I felt embarrassed. Now,I have confidence from watching girls on youtube make their dreams come true! I want to be like them some day,I can't wait for my first class! I realized this when I was dancing,I felt so FREE.All of my negative thoughts were gone and I never felt so happy,it's so relaxing and free.It opens up your heart,I'm going to take it 3-4 times a week so I can get better! Practice makes PERFECT!
@xXSkrillexLoveXx - That's right. I don't know where you live, but you only get ONE chance in life. You need to follow your heart. It's not just a poetic thing, it really is the truth: once you've found your heart's calling, don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. It's not an easy road but have patience and it will come. I promise.
Actually it's very common to start at that age. Classes where I am usually start lyrical at age 7 and modern at age 10. Don't ever think it's not possible because you will NEVER know if you don't give it a chance. You might have a hidden talent you never had a chance to discover.
I am 13 years old, and I have never danced before but a few weeks ago I did start ballet, and loved it, at home I don't do anything els anymore, but my 3rd lesson on ballet my ballet teacher told me that she thinks that in my life before this one, I was a ballet dancer, And I hope, that once opon a time, I will be a real ballerina! :)
I'm 17 and have no intention of becoming a professional. However I would like to know if I have any hope of doing points if I start ballet this year knowing that I have danced modern before and am currently doing gymnastics. Anyone?
@alittlebeatle like going straight onto pointe shoes? if thats what your asking, than no. to go onto point you need TIMEEEE in regular ballet class, it takes a huge amount of ankle, and toe strength to be on pointe
@alittlebeatle It is more than just having strong ankles that you would have from the gymnastics and modern isn't going to teach you the technique that is needed. Once you learn enough technique, on average it takes 2-4 years and when your teachers think your ready she'll let you know.
Oh you guys get all of your dreams i get none. Iam 12 and Ballet is my passion. I always love ballet and ballet always be in my heart since i was 3. I keep on begging and telling my parents but they dont take me seriously. " Oh you wont reach their level, You are too old." this isnt like you guys! You guys dance ballet. Your dream was accepted by your parents but mine wasnt. I want to cry everyday because i want to dance! I tell my parents but no its always a negative. I want to go to Juliard.
@xLoliChiDesuu aaw sweetie xx if your parents listen, show them proof, or if they dont and are like mine!!! If they seriously dont listen get after school lessons for 30 mins every few days, if you get pocket money, then you can pay yourself cus they can be as cheap as £4.50 in the uk, good luck! x
I'm 15 and I first did it for only two months before stoping when I was just 11 years old I regret it, and want so bad to do it again. My parents don't have the money anymore and I'm afraid I'm too old. I know Michal Flantly a tap dancer started at 14 and no one told him he could go into it profissinaly, but now he is the fastest tap dancer in the world. I agree with KateKDance. I don't need easy I just need Possible. I don't want to go the rest of my life saying "I wish I never gave it up."
I definitely agree - don't let age stop you! I'm 39 and after a break of more than 23 years I joined a ballet class 3 months ago (4 months after giving birth to 2nd substantial baby I arrived at my first class in a maternity dress feeling fairly ridiculous). I'd forgotten how great ballet feels and I'm addicted. Although it's just for fun I'm now doing 2 classes a week and starting to focus on technical detail here and there. So, @KateKDance , @Ayosandra93 , @sarahjuliia et al, just go for it!
@Aldosfuturewife1 You are such an inspiration!! I have wanted to do ballet all my life (When I was a kid I would walk on my toes because I wanted to be a dancer...it kinda stuck like that and now I have to make sure I keep my heels on the ground XD) I had to quit for financial reasons but have just started up again because I can pay for it myself (for now at least XD). I'm 19 now...but I hope that I can do what you did!! I'm so passionate about ballet, thank you for the inspiration!!
Also, I find Anaheim Ballet's videos very inspirational, for those of you wishing to start ballet at a late age. One of there dancers didn't start until she was in college, an you can see she's an amazing dancer when you watch the videos.
I started ballet when I was 13. I'm 16 now, and I love ballet. I don't plan on pursuing a professional career, but my dream is to some day be able to dance pointe roles in shows. I'm trying out for my studio's company next year, and I hope I get in!
I'm 28, and I started ballet last year. I develop every day a lot, and there isn't no other thing in my life with so much pleasure :) So don't worry about your age, if you really want, just do it!
Hi. I'm interested in neither extreme (ie - I don't want to be recreational and I don't want to be professional). I just would like to be great at it. I'm 26 and I have strong musicality (from piano my whole life) but little training... Any tips? Thanks!
Ballet is seriously something I would love to do professionally, and I know it will take loads of dedication, but I was wondering if I started dancing next Wednesday, would 11 be too old to start and make a career out of it? I really hope not because ballet is one of the most beautiful things anyone could do. Please let me know asap, because I don't want to be a recreational dancer.
@justineclarissa it's really not about the age you start. I know people who started when they were 3, and are just as good at peope who started at 9. It's all about your persistence. Do NOT get me wrong. Ballet is not easy. but man does it feel amazing when you get into it, or when your teacher compliments you on something you've really been working on. If you're reallyyy determined, and get your practice in plentifully, you just might make it! :) good luck! oh and do make sure your skl is good!
bull i started at 22. was on pointe in a year doing center work. if you have the will there is a way... even to become pro. dont let anyone tell you you cant.. prove them wrong!
. i dont dance now but I was well on my way, Had previous jazz and modern training though from when I was a teen.
I just started ballet last week. I'm eleven years old and I was put in a class with seven year olds. I worked and concentrated really hard and around half way through class the teacher came up to me and said that she wanted me to move up to a more advance class. Now I'm in a ballet, tap, and jazz class with kids my own age :D
I started dancing at 19. I'm 29 now and I've auditioned (and attended) both The New World School of the Arts in Miami and The Ailey School in New York City. I now dance in seasonal dance roles for the Florida Grand Opera. Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. If you want it bad enough you can make it happen!
@Aldosfuturewife1 I'm 18 and you have inspired me in so many ways . I thought it was impossible to start now but now knowing that you have been successful It gives me so much encouragement to begin classes :D
@Aldosfuturewife1 You have no idea how inspiring your comment is to me. I'm 17 and I started ballet a year ago. I love dancing more than anything in the world and I want to be a professional. You gave me hope today.
@Aldosfuturewife1 That's so awesome to hear! I just started ballet at 20 and I love it! I'm looking at more classes and summer intensives, I hope everything continues to go well for you(:
I'm a dance instructor, in burlesque, jazz, lyrical, hip hop and pole fitness. As a child I had taken intense ballet from 4 years old to 10. I kept dancing in jazz, majorette, gymnastics until I was 18.
Taking an intro ballet class here and there and to perfect my lyrical choreography I decided to throw myself into intermediate ballet and I surprised myself at how much my body remembered! I thought the whole class would leave me behind because I thought I developed a rather sloppy form and for
i'm 18 ! i'm going to start the next year in a ballet university! i have a year of ballet class when i was 16 year old.... this year i'm go to training to be in form next year...
@nahii93 How did you get in? I started about 4 months ago and I am 16 and its become an extreme passion and I want to pursue it as possibly a career someday (hopefully doesn't seem to silly)
@xNumbHeartx iis a teacher:) before you take a placement test and performed a tract of formation of a couple of years ... I do other kinds of dance for 6 years where you use a lot of mid-level ballet .. and trained enough ... I hope I do good haha:)...
@xNumbHeartx Don't let anyone put you off. I started when I was 16 and listened to the people who told me I was too old. I should have ignored them and just got on with it. I am in my 50s, too old to be a ballerina now, but not too old to dance for the fun of it. Don't let anyone smash up your dreams.
@realzoomy I'm going to try my hardest to prove all those who say it can't happen and for myself and those who didn't follow this dream (My mom as an example). I guess its just going to be a hard journey
I don't see why you couldn't pursue a career. When people watch a performance they don't know when you started, how long you've been doing it etc, they know what they see. If you can reach out to people emotionally with your dance, people would pay to see you - thus you'd become a professional dancer. I know that there are people who started after their teenage years and are going en pointe, if you can do that, you can also attract audiences. It'll take you longer but that's not SO important.
I started dancing when when I was 14 and now 3 years later I'm on pointe. I plan on pursuing a career in musical theatre and dance will help me get there! It's never too late to start!
I'm starting pointe classes in January. I'm extremely excited, because I haven't danced since I was 13 and now I'm 15. I don't care how hard it is, I just want to dance. :)
Tights for men is a reality for many year. Men wear the tights once more around the world. Just a pity that many of them to hide but once more the men ventured and bulge out from the truth. w-w-w-hkey1-weblahko-sk
I'm a balletteacher and to answer your question: i'm not sure. I guess you can when you're healthy and when you have had some years of ballettraining so your technique is strong.
i'm 15 and i started ballet last year, because i'm doing figure skating and my coach said that ballet could really help me. now they say i should quit figure skating and do ballet seriously. i have been doing figure skating since i was 4, and still love it, but i love ballet to.... i really don't know what to choice.
I'm 14. I have never danced before, but I believe I will start in January. My parents keep telling me to save the money, and put it to good use. I know in my heart, that I couldn't put it to better use than using it for my ballet classes. My parents say I have no potential for it, and maybe I don't, but that won't stop me from trying. I know I have a long way ahead of me. Just like the quote, I don't need easy, I just need possible.
That is the perfect attitide to have! But you must be warned of what is ahead. This is going to be a very slow start. You will most likely be in a ballet school with girls who are a lot better than you, and a lot skinnier than you. This MUSN'T put you down! It takes years before you become naturally good, where someone can throw a move at you and you automatically know what posture to hold. But you must never ever give up. Trust me, its hard and at times horrible, but so worth it...
@soph811 - Thank you. - The trouble with being a late starter is not being able to start with the same skill as others. - When you're young, you all start off the same (as you get older, some people will advance, some people will stay behind). It's funny how nobody takes me seriously when I tell them I want to dance! Practice just makes better practice! I just hope that the students at the studio accept me with warm hearts :) And I know it's going to be worth it!! Thank you again!
@KateKDance I started when I was 14. I'm 15 now and I'm en pointe. Never give up hope because you never know you could be the next prima ballerina if you just believe in yourself (I know that sounds soooooo corny XD)
@KateKDance I'm 14 too, and I always wanted to be a ballerina, I started ballet when I was 3 but I got scared when we had to do somersaults so I left the classes. At 7 I started with gymnastics just for fun, and at 10 I started ballet from the beggining but I couldn't finish my instruction. Now I'm pretty flexible because of that but I always thought I was too old to be a ballerina. You've given me hope, this summer I'll make my dream come true and I'll start ballet classes. We'll be ballerinas.
@CattPatheticPanther I'm so glad that I've given you hope. It's comments like these, which tell me to keep going too! I hope you excel in ballet, and overcome your fears. Keep your head high. You are a GREAT dancer and don't let ANYONE tell you otherwise. And yes, we will be ballerinas. (:
@KateKDance So nice. I'm absolutely sure you can do it well. I'm 18 and i have danced it before when i was a child, but i can't keept with. But now i'm thinking to get it back! Never too late!! Good Luck Kate.
@KateKDance I was in the same situation with you once. I took my first ballet lesson when I was five and continued till fifth grade. Then I quit. I never wanted to, but my parents didn't like the teachers. I started to do ice skating and continued it for two years. I bought skates and loved that sport. But then, I realized that it wasn't the right thing to do. Deep down, I knew ballet would have to take a part in my life. Now I take ballet lessons and I have pointe shoes.
Thats awesome im 15 now and have been doing ballet for almost a year now. They said i had the correct body and very hypernobile ankles for it so yeah i hope to become professional i was nervous she was going to say 5 ot 6 the latest lol.
@TheMaraMassacre That's amazing I'm fifteen and I love all the classical arts, which includes wide ranges or everything, I very much wish do be a professional ballet dancer and I was nervous it was too late. Thank you!
I want to back into ballet for the past 2 years. I was in ballet from 4 to 7 then I quit because of my shyness. I probably won't make it professional but I want to do it for the love of dance. But I really can't afford it right now. I want to tell my mom but I am scared she thinks I am going through some sort of fad. Nervous I guess
I did ballet probably in year 3 or 4 at the age of about 7 or 8 and then I quit because of my nervousness. I also had the chance to do gymnastics. I was also too nervous to do. I was 2 at that time. I really want to do ice or figure skating or gymnastics and maybe ballet., but I am really too scared of the age limits. I don't want a full-on career, just pleasure and a few trophies. I did taekwondo which involves high kicks and achieved a red belt which is 3 away from black. What shall i do? Help
@tjgirlygirl707 Started at 3 ;D But I nearly quit many times along the way, not bcuz I didn't like it but because it wasn't my choice - however I love it unconditionally now and I'm trying to get on pointe!
I had about two years of ballet when I was really small and I got bored then I practised several daces and sports last year I went back to ballet and I love it. I'm 15 now Am I too old to actualy get good at it?
I'm 12 and I started ballet just a month before i turned 12, so I haven't been doing it for a long time. But its fine even though i got put in to a class where everyone is around 11. But it's fine. You don't have to take the RAD exams the first year :) and I'm not. Probably wait til next year when I get to Grade 6
What if you would like to teach ballet in the future, like as a part time job, instead of dancing with a company, do you still have to start as a child? :)
I am fifteen and was wondering if I am too old to start ballet and to maybe pursue a professional career. I took ballet for a few months when I was twelve but I had to quit due to a commitment but I do know the basics of ballet. If I was able to pursue a career what would I need to do to reach that level and when could I begin en pointe?
@unefilledeballet i started dancing a year ago and i'm supposed to go on pointe this month. if you start later you have to be ok with being in classes with kids ayounger than you who kinda look down on you for being so old and at their level. you have to be willing to work harder than any one else because there is so much more you need to catch up on. you also can't get discouraged that there are people at your age that are much better than you... just keeping working hard and you'll get there.
I'm 16 & had 2 years of ballet when i was 4 & 5. I also had 3 more years of different dance like jazz/hip-hop & tap. I would love to take pointe but i waited so long. Is it too late?
@tzuczek I'm 14 but nearly 15 and I just started ballet again having quit when I was 10. I re-entered classes at associated board grade 4 and I've done street and modern dance for 4 years. I'm starting pointe again and I think that if you train your ankles and feet are flexible and strong enough then you're fine to start pointe! Good luck x
Honestly, if you are ment to be a ballet dancer as your career then it is never to late to start...Vanessa Sah from the Anaheim ballet didn't start until college...and she is a professional.
ohhhhhhh great !!!!! that is wanderfull i'm 15 and i'm not really flexible and i thought that i't was late for me to start ballet but now i know i was wrong thank you
I want to start ballet again like for fun, I use to do it when I was like 7, and I been thinking about it for like a year, but I never had a good turn out or arch >< So I don't know if I should... Can you develope arch and turn out with practice or you have to be born?? :(
Alright i just turned 12 this june, and i want to persure my career as a professional dancer, but i am afraid of asking my mother, and i really want to go. Thumbs up if she should let me!
hi im 14 and live in the highlands of scotland and am at a grade 4 (out of 5) in scottish country dance, I understand that there are similarities between the two and am wondering if it is advisable for me to start ballet, given my age? thanks
I've only recently turned 15 and am naturally reasonably flexible - able to do the splits, etc. - and was wondering (if I've no dancing experience whatsoever), could I ever master the art of ballet if I were to start now?
Even if your 16 or 18 or whatever age you are right now you shouldn't be afraid. If you practice hard enough you might be able to skip a few levels like I did. I remember getting into the advance class when I was around 9 years old and now I'm getting my pointe shoes cause I practiced until my bones would ache for 3 days. So don't give up. Just keep practicing for that level which has your age or maybe even higher!
I started dancing when i was 11 years old, a few months from me turning 12. I did an intro to ballet class and they said i was too advanced for that class so i moved 2 levels up. i was in a class with a bunch of 8 year olds and i thought i would never be a professional dancer. My mom, though, had faith in me. I just turned 14 a few weeks ago and this im on pointe and i am a competitive dancer now. i am so happy i had still had faith in my self and still do today :)

@LimeGirl08 Yes there is. You just need enough technique and good ankle strength, it takes UP to 3-4 years of classes.

I started ballet when I was 13. I'm 16 now, and I love ballet. I don't plan on pursuing a professional career, but my dream is to some day be able to dance pointe roles in shows. I'm trying out for my studio's company next year, and I hope I get in!

Please let me know asap, because I don't want to be a recreational dancer.
justineclarissa 1 month ago
@justineclarissa it's really not about the age you start. I know people who started when they were 3, and are just as good at peope who started at 9. It's all about your persistence. Do NOT get me wrong. Ballet is not easy. but man does it feel amazing when you get into it, or when your teacher compliments you on something you've really been working on. If you're reallyyy determined, and get your practice in plentifully, you just might make it! :) good luck! oh and do make sure your skl is good!

Trust me, its hard and at times horrible, but so worth it...
soph811 2 months ago 2
@soph811 - Thank you. - The trouble with being a late starter is not being able to start with the same skill as others. - When you're young, you all start off the same (as you get older, some people will advance, some people will stay behind). It's funny how nobody takes me seriously when I tell them I want to dance! Practice just makes better practice! I just hope that the students at the studio accept me with warm hearts :) And I know it's going to be worth it!! Thank you again!

You know what to do.

jojozeeify 2 months ago
I did ballet probably in year 3 or 4 at the age of about 7 or 8 and then I quit because of my nervousness. I also had the chance to do gymnastics. I was also too nervous to do. I was 2 at that time. I really want to do ice or figure skating or gymnastics and maybe ballet., but I am really too scared of the age limits. I don't want a full-on career, just pleasure and a few trophies. I did taekwondo which involves high kicks and achieved a red belt which is 3 away from black. What shall i do? Help

unefilledeballet 3 months ago
@unefilledeballet i started dancing a year ago and i'm supposed to go on pointe this month. if you start later you have to be ok with being in classes with kids ayounger than you who kinda look down on you for being so old and at their level. you have to be willing to work harder than any one else because there is so much more you need to catch up on. you also can't get discouraged that there are people at your age that are much better than you... just keeping working hard and you'll get there.
