@TomGreenUK I found a live version of this song on an album called "100% Rock". Blackmore's sound and Gillan's voice sound like 80s but I think Gillan hits all notes without playback. But I don't know exactly when it was recorded. That's why I asked. You can find it on my channel...
At least he didn't wimp out & downtune or anything, he still went for it, & I give him props for that. Most singers his age would be too afraid they'd fail & wouldn't go for the high part.
Is not that the Birmingham concert on Nov. 9, 1993, during which Ritchie Blackmore left the scene? Because everything seems to indicate are that this concert. If so, this is the last concert of the best composition of the group. A week after it Ritchie go away. From the Deep Purple of course.

Good song and a good performance BUT....... This is definitely not one of Blackmores most inspired solos. @Toottycat I don't disagree, Blackmore is in a class for himself no doubt about that. My point is that he is also VERY temperamental and his playing varies a LOT. When he is good he is awesome but when he is bad........ (i have heard him with Rainbow - CRAP). @ovemunk Sure enough, I fully agree, Morse is more of a pleasant guy whereas Blackmore was temperamental by nature. At any rate, I think that if we look objectively we have to judge artists (of any art or discipline) by their career output rather than their character.
@Toottycat Certainly and imho Blackmore is on the top 5 of guitarists. The way he combines classic motives with sheer artistry and lightning speed is awesome to listen too and his dabble with other harmonies is something quite unique. "Gates of Babylon" f.inst with it's middle east inspiration (melodic minor). He also had his very own distinct sound which is what i REALLY miss in DP. Morse's sound is way to "digital" for my liking. BUT i can fully understand why they prefer Morse. ;-)

Última apresentação com o grande Blackmore, solando muito, como sempre. Já o Gillan, tá mal nesse show. Mas vale como o último registro do verdadeiro Deep Purple.
These people are true artists in the very sense of the word: trying out new things without worrying about eventual commercial success, taking risks, surprising people, opening new gates, defining a whole new kind of music. In my country this song was elected best of the 100 best songs of all time during nearly 25 years and rightfully so: this is the masterpiece in rock's history.
@ZelenaBananaa yo, banana KID! 1st of all try to measure your attitude towards one of the greatest bands that defined the rock industry and pay some proper respect.
2nd of all try to sing like on the original record the let's see you after 40 years if you'll keep up with the voice.
If you think you can do better, prove yourself. But until then stop being a spoiled brat.
@ZelenaBananaa You didn't get smacked enough as a kid. Show some respect. It takes a hell of a singer to sing like that, especially after almost 50 years.
A milestone in hard rock: There was nothing like this before and nothing like it ever after. This composition is radically different than anything else that has appeared either in Deep Purple's own recordings or in other rock musicians' repertoire. This track simply stands out in a class of its own - a 'one-off' musical experience never to be repeated again in the history of rock. It was launched almost 40 years ago and its indelible 'punch' without compare still towers today as ever before.
@Toottycat Agreed, the structure of the song is incredibly complex (or rather plain unusual) compared to its similiarity in chords and time signatures. I doubt anyone will ever top this, it was even better live back in the day when they first performed it, which still can be relived (to some extent) through the DVDs.
@paragraph7 Yes, I too believe that the earlier versions are best. When you replicate past glories after a span of time they lose their original spontaneous quality. As you say, we can fortunately relive the experience of the past through DVDs.
@Toottycat escpecially when Gillan can't even hit the lowest notes in the chorus : ) Still i think the fact that he can't sing it correctly anymore creates the legend that once was Mk 2, that once was one of the most original band of all time. And in that legend it still lives on, probably forever.
@paragraph7 Rightly so, Mk II are the topmost line-up, and, I would add, also Mk III offered some remarkable compositions, but ever since, their overall musical production is, by comparison, declassed. Now Steve Morse may be a talented guitarist (though to me Blackmore remains definitely superior) but Morse has to date not produced one single riff that has become immortal, unlike Blackmore, whose riffs are indellibly etched in musical history.
@Toottycat That's what i been thinking for sometime now, how musicians sometime think that the point is to be mainly skilled with their instruments. I have seen loads of covers on youtube covering Deep Purple songs etc. perfectly to the note, but that's only copying. It may be fun to play covers and see if you can play the same songs as the masters but the pure musicianship and talent, in my opinion, should show in what you create out of nothing. Which is what Blackmore and Co. did.
@paragraph7 You are 100 per cent to the point, and as you say, it's not all about how fast or skilled you may be with your instrument but what you create with your instrument, what you invent and compose. Unfortunately many people fail to grasp this fundamental issue and peevishly harp out how fast is Mr X and how cool is Mr Y and how flashy is Mr Z. It takes much more than that to be a master and Blackmore proved himself to be in a class of his own - his track record of works are living proof.
It took almost 15 years for him to realise that he doesn't have the same vocal cappabilities as he used to have and that he just can't sing Child in Time like it's meant to be sang. But he anyway gets my applause for just trying to sing it.
I can't understand why some people don't like Ian Gillan the man has serious problem with his voice and you can compare him like he was in 70's!!!! the man is a great artist and vocalist with powerful talent!!! This song is an anthem and Gillan he stand's very good for a better version you must watch india '95!
You missunderstood. We know, there was some concerts where Blackmore did not play beacuse of fights with Gillan. Lord said that it was better playing olny with Ian and Roger, than playing with offended Blackmore. This song is damn classic since it has been written. But to my mind it would be better if it was played with flow. Blackmore didn't show any feelings just moving his fingers without any idea.
Yeah, but when he was even a little enthusiastic to a concert, it was great performed show. Dialogues between Hammond and guitar, fantastic improvisations. Here I can't hear a sing of good improvisation. But anyway Ritchie is Ritchie. I still think, his the only guitarist, who fits DP. Notice, he never plays any rythm guitar part. This task is played by Jon. Other guitarists a little changed this "style". That's why Blackmore can't be replaced if talking about real, classic DP..
I have been watching more versions of this song on YouTube, and now I think I agree with you somewhat. I was already a man when the first version of the song came out, and that is what is in my head all these years. But most of Ritchie's other takes during performances were not even close to the spirit of the original riffs. See next post...
I am always one to give some license to slight variations, just to makes things interesting and give a slightly different twist, but his riffs didn't even make the song recognizable at all. I could have listened to just the riffs, and not even known what song he was playing.
Actually organ plays parts, which could be somehow named "riffs". I am not as lucky as you. I "became a men" when Jon Lord turned grey ;p I had to discover hundrets of records of PD, LZ, PF, BS step by step, actually playing it as well on el. guitar as on organ.
What is more to this concert I don't like sound of percussion, especially foot (dnt know if it's correct word). There is much less power in the drums than in f.e. Made in Japan or other 1972-74 csts. 1984 was better too.
futebalmakedonia, simple! Get a Strat and replace the bridge and neck pickups with twin coils with coil taps. Hey presto! A Strat that can sound pretty close to a Gibbo.
Brilliant frontman Gillan, one of the best ever, always talks to the audience, always a sign of a great frontman, and explains the songs, and the stories behind them.i love that.Brilliant vocalist too and very pretty..God bless you Sir..
I have to take some of what I said back. The tune is still dramatic and and an excellent live song. Ian does a fine job despite his aging inability to reach 3 octaves.

Última apresentação com o grande Blackmore, solando muito, como sempre. Já o Gillan, tá mal nesse show. Mas vale como o último registro do verdadeiro Deep Purple.

Poor Gillan. Someone should have been squeezing his balls when aiming for those high notes.

But until then stop being a spoiled brat.
richardhalo 1 year ago

Toottycat 1 year ago 78
@Toottycat Agreed, the structure of the song is incredibly complex (or rather plain unusual) compared to its similiarity in chords and time signatures. I doubt anyone will ever top this, it was even better live back in the day when they first performed it, which still can be relived (to some extent) through the DVDs.
paragraph7 1 year ago
@paragraph7 Yes, I too believe that the earlier versions are best. When you replicate past glories after a span of time they lose their original spontaneous quality. As you say, we can fortunately relive the experience of the past through DVDs.
Toottycat 1 year ago
@Toottycat escpecially when Gillan can't even hit the lowest notes in the chorus : ) Still i think the fact that he can't sing it correctly anymore creates the legend that once was Mk 2, that once was one of the most original band of all time. And in that legend it still lives on, probably forever.
paragraph7 1 year ago
@paragraph7 Rightly so, Mk II are the topmost line-up, and, I would add, also Mk III offered some remarkable compositions, but ever since, their overall musical production is, by comparison, declassed. Now Steve Morse may be a talented guitarist (though to me Blackmore remains definitely superior) but Morse has to date not produced one single riff that has become immortal, unlike Blackmore, whose riffs are indellibly etched in musical history.
Toottycat 1 year ago
@Toottycat That's what i been thinking for sometime now, how musicians sometime think that the point is to be mainly skilled with their instruments. I have seen loads of covers on youtube covering Deep Purple songs etc. perfectly to the note, but that's only copying. It may be fun to play covers and see if you can play the same songs as the masters but the pure musicianship and talent, in my opinion, should show in what you create out of nothing. Which is what Blackmore and Co. did.
paragraph7 1 year ago

For those as old as I am, this song was DP's anthem, even though most people consider it to be "Smoke on The Water".
I still have my original "Shades" LP released in '68..... but it isn't in very good shape.

comunistarock 1 year ago
@Gryszaq You have absolutely no clue do you? Better stop getting high. This song is a classic since probably before you were born.
TXranger55 1 year ago
You missunderstood. We know, there was some concerts where Blackmore did not play beacuse of fights with Gillan. Lord said that it was better playing olny with Ian and Roger, than playing with offended Blackmore. This song is damn classic since it has been written. But to my mind it would be better if it was played with flow. Blackmore didn't show any feelings just moving his fingers without any idea.
Gryszaq 1 year ago
Okie Dokie @Gryszaq
Blackmore was always more the unemotional stoic kinda guy. :)
TXranger55 1 year ago
Yeah, but when he was even a little enthusiastic to a concert, it was great performed show. Dialogues between Hammond and guitar, fantastic improvisations. Here I can't hear a sing of good improvisation. But anyway Ritchie is Ritchie. I still think, his the only guitarist, who fits DP. Notice, he never plays any rythm guitar part. This task is played by Jon. Other guitarists a little changed this "style". That's why Blackmore can't be replaced if talking about real, classic DP..
Gryszaq 1 year ago
I have been watching more versions of this song on YouTube, and now I think I agree with you somewhat. I was already a man when the first version of the song came out, and that is what is in my head all these years. But most of Ritchie's other takes during performances were not even close to the spirit of the original riffs. See next post...
TXranger55 1 year ago
I am always one to give some license to slight variations, just to makes things interesting and give a slightly different twist, but his riffs didn't even make the song recognizable at all. I could have listened to just the riffs, and not even known what song he was playing.
TXranger55 1 year ago
Actually organ plays parts, which could be somehow named "riffs". I am not as lucky as you. I "became a men" when Jon Lord turned grey ;p I had to discover hundrets of records of PD, LZ, PF, BS step by step, actually playing it as well on el. guitar as on organ.
What is more to this concert I don't like sound of percussion, especially foot (dnt know if it's correct word). There is much less power in the drums than in f.e. Made in Japan or other 1972-74 csts. 1984 was better too.
Gryszaq 1 year ago
PD - I ment DP ;p I hope I don't have to explain other letters :)

I knew what you meant, on the rest of them. And a JH back at ya. I saw him once.
And an SRV.... saw him 5 times.
Foot.... foot is something you feel by being there, not hear through recorded media.

I have to take some of what I said back. The tune is still dramatic and and an excellent live song. Ian does a fine job despite his aging inability to reach 3 octaves.
