u could get real creativ on this but sorry to say every thing u done so far sound real shit u say u can make some music on it well fuckin do it cos the shit u cumin out with just reck my head u look like u not know what ur doin ever time u get a good sound u loose it nd look like ur freakin to get it back
damn i wish i could make it, i'm busy on my casio SK-1's bought 2 for 1,50 euro's xD i'm repairing 1 because it's broken.. I want to excercise on them, and then make some beautiful noises! ~ This vid is also inspiring!
@mooseums - Most instruments that you buy now tend to either have a long learning curve or make the same category of sounds. Now that goes without saying that there aren't good instruments out there or that musicians aren't capable of learning to use them; but this offers some sounds to build music off of; dependent upon one's style of playing. Personally I would have turned some of these sounds into a techno song on their own! Great upload.
@eddie23a hi, i am a keyboardist. recently i join with a reggae band. i have korg pa 2x pro. so, just want to know , that can i connect this to the keyboard? please reply me. thanx
ahoy, i've got a similar karaoke echo box from gpx, looks a bit like the barbie A board, bashed it a bit getting it out, but will wire that up... i wanted to ask on the tape input bit, are your input wires & body contacts on the same 3 connects? looks a bit like a plug in the back of a pc cd-rom/dvd-rom audio cable, standard i think... cheers!
the suspense is killing me... amidst the semi-precious sound is the subliminal yet ultimately climactic crux of this film... what the hell is the unused gadget in the upper-left corner?? you artists and your unresolved tension... sequel!!! i want to see "attack of the killer upper-left corner monster (bride of echo destruktor)"
It is a creative technical repurposing of an otherwise useless piece of junk. In this case an electronic toy was modified to create a device that can be used to perform new and unexpected electronic sounds.
It is a great example of rethinking traditional electronic engineering and user interfaces, and doing so in an artistic way. Also it is recycling what may otherwise be waste, so it is green to.
Eddie,I know you said dont have time to do the actual build so I was wondering: Do you share/sell your schematics? If so, I would be very interested in borrowing/purchasing them. :D
he he! Thanks for the support, I appreciate it. It'll take more than a few haters to stop me, in fact I kind of see them as a challenge, makes me want to build something even more obnoxious :) after all ASMO stands for Anti Social Musik Ordder.
it has an echo circuit in it, the bends make it feed back on it's self, some of the body contacts are connected to where the tape play head connects to the board which makes a buzz when you touch it, like right at the start of the video.
Great machine. It's got a very unique sound that stands out somewhat from what a lot of bent gear produces. I think i'll be hunting down a barbie machine to send wrong some time in the future. Keep up the good work :)
no, it's all self generated, it's the echo circuit from a barbie karaoke machine, it does have an audio input but i'm not using it in this video, just feeding back on it's self. you can do some pretty mental stuff with it, highly recommended bend.
That is amazing man. any chance you could give us a look inside at the setup? if not it's completely understandable, but i'd love to build a parallel.
well I haven't electrocuted myself or blown anything up yet! I only use adapters when the original toy used one, and give the circuit a good going over with a meter just to check there's no stray current being routed the wrong to the dc socket on the instrument. If you're not sure it's best avoided. Generally I use batteries as it's less cables
yes, just the karaoke with the tape mechanism removed, I've added jack inputs connected to the tape in point on the board, although I'm not running anything through it in this video.
Have a look at casperelectronics dot com, there are schematics. I used them as a guide and found some of my own bends, there are loads of possibilities, i'm gonna build another with different bends. I gigged with it at the weekend, it's great for live improvisation, huge variety of sounds, this vid only scratches the surface of what it will do.
ASMO, I will honestly do anything to get one of your projects. Ill make you guys music, movies, design a homepage, anything in exchange. But I dont have cold hard cash. My services for yours?
I'm flattered, thanks, my time is quite limited for bending, I wish I had more time for my own projects, and I never make the same thing twice, however I'm always happy to share tips and tricks. I'm working on a web site to document my work more fully with selected schematics which I hope to have online mid September.
How much would you charge to make me one?
I bend myself,...but just do not have the time.
I'd love to use this at one of my shows.

That box is total sickness....
I just received all my parts and am waiting on the Plasti-dip to dry on my enclosure before I start piecing one of these together.
Which Barbie IC is this? Gumdrop style or the other one you mentioned on your site? Sounds glitchy but also kinda pulses a bit too.

Tyler11440 3 years ago
just bends, I completely removed the tape mechanism.
eddie23a 3 years ago
where do the sounds come from?
Tyler11440 3 years ago
it has an echo circuit in it, the bends make it feed back on it's self, some of the body contacts are connected to where the tape play head connects to the board which makes a buzz when you touch it, like right at the start of the video.

it picks up radio in certain configurations, you can hear a bit towards the end of the video.
BBC Asian network mostly.
