He was born with the capacity for empathy, he lost it after witnessing his Mom strangled in her own bed sheets when he was three, that spurred a twisted sexual fantasy and desire for bondage that haunted him the rest of his life. Serial killers are not born, they are manufactured, they know what they are doing is wrong, but they do not care. His actions are his responsibility.
