@thebeavear1965 Zarkava may well have turned out to be one of the best horses let alone fillies ever seen on a racetrack had she been allowed to run as a 4yo but sadly it was not to be. Zenyatta was the darling of the track and did it longer and better from a spectators point of view and she could dance :0)
I refuse to take side they were both brilliant but this filly Havre De Grace wouldn't have blown wind up their backsides.
i disagree with all of you bashing the quality. the quality is only as good as the training. it's not that these are bad horses... we've got weak sauce trainers. the horses that are well trained and pushed to be good are the ones that deliver. Havre De Grace is a wonderful mare. I love her heart.
@westinniles Tizway had to be in that race. His Met Mile was f***ing awesome! Now there's a beast who could do damage at the Classic now that he showed two turns are no problem for him.
We have bad breeding....these horses couldn't run 10 furlongs that is why there is not a single 2 turn open G1 race @ 10 furlongs in the east....stop for a minute and digest that...
THERE IS NOT A SINGLE OPEN TWO TURN G1 @ 10 furlongs in the whole eastern USA.....those races were shortened to accomodate these pathetic horses.....that is why inferior overrated overhype horses like 9 furlong rachel can run in that pathetic shortened woodward
These females are good but not great and I agree with westinniles.....
THESE ARE SHIT FIELDS and I would speak my mind. These handicap horses have gotten so bad that we cannot even field a true open grade 1 race anymore..
The Woodward and Whitney and the JCGC HAS BECOME A TOTAL F'ING BIG JOKES...........and i wonder why the drf.com and east coast talkingheads are bashing the California horses.....HEY nitwits LOOK AT YOUR BACKYARD, the east coast horses SUCKSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
@duhru4real Yes, Europe is producing better females right now, but I'm pretty sure one of those "sucky" horses will win the Classic. Well, maybe not in that field (except Havre de Grace of course) - Tizway was a monster in the Met and can handle 2 turns, Twirling Candy on his day is a mighty force, and Stay Thirsty is hitting his stride. I'll tell you this: if hyped-up So You Think is entered in the Classic, he will get clobbered by one of these horses, and that's a fact.
They made such a big deal in 2009 about a filly winning the Woodward. Well...Havre De Grace just made that theory look cheap. Both fillies (2009 and 2011) ran against "shit" fields.
I would like to speak my mind, but I'll just leave it at that.
RACHEL ALEXANDRA IS NOT OVERRATED!!!!!!! YOUR THINKING OF ZENYATTA.
RACHEL ALEXANDRA BEAT THE BOYS 3 TIMES, FIRST FILLY EVER TO WIN WOODWARD, AND BROKE 3 TRACK MARGINS, 10, 19 AND 20 AT THE KENTUCKY OAKS, YOU TAKE THAT FUCKING BACK!!!! RACHEL IS THE BEST FILLY I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!
@apachespook71 I agree. Zenyatta is THE overrated racemare, winning most of her races against much smaller fillies and then beating a turf horse in Gio Ponti at 09 Breeders. Rachel is one of the best fillies the US has produced in a while, beating strong male fields several times. I wouldn't put Zarkava or Goldikova above her. Don't forget Rags to Riches' epic win over Curlin at Belmont 07 - another great filly.
@rcschumann You got to be kidding! What strong male fields did she beat? Oh I forgot, she beat Mine that Bird in the Preakness. Are you aware that Mine that Bird NEVER won another race after the K Derby. RA was an average filly at best.
@saveus228 I knew I was going to get blasted for making that comment! I guess Rachel's fields were weaker. Gone are the days of Lady's Secret and Winning Colors, and of Secretariat, Dr. Fager and Spectacular Bid for that matter. The US hasn't produced a really great TB since Tiznow and Ghostzapper, but there are some good horses that are finding their stride now, and that I enjoy watching, like Tizway. The best racemares are currently in Europe - Snow Fairy, Midday, Goldikova etc...
@apachespook71 Rachel Alexandra is the most OVERRATED filly ever. Her owners were scared shitl*** to run her against Zenyatta. She would have been buried and they knew that!!
Name another racehorse who won 19 in a row 17 in graded stakes and just barely came up short of number 20 in a repeat victory in a race only one horse has ever won twice and then get back to me please. There was a reason why no horse had 17+ on a win streak in Grade 1 company in 60 years .Before you diss put yourself in the shoes of the horse and think about just when was the last time we saw this? If you can't answer within a 30 year period don't diss.
The sad thing is people wave Zenyatta's undefeated streak like a flag to prove her dominance, which is actually quite embarrassing. Since 17 of those were against no name horses that have never heard of a G1 race in their life. The only G1 filly she beat in 2010 was Switch, who she faced at 9.5 furlongs; and the filly won at 7 furlongs. Beating up weaker, shorter distanced, younger fillies multiple times is nothing to be proud about.
@queenluciaa If what your saying is true then why didn't they run her against Zenyatta in the Apple Blossom stake?. I know why. They were scared shitless and didn't want to be embarrassed.
Yeah, that's probably it. It's not like they wanted to protect their un-physically fit filly from injuring herself in a tough race against the greatest older mare in the country. That'd be just absurd.
@queenluciaa HaHa un-physically fit filly? Was she physically unfit when she was burying those high price claimers(that's what they were) that she was running against. Look, you have your opinions and I have mine. I certainly don't dislike you for having a different opinion than mine. Let's just agree to disagree because we will never know who would have won had they raced. :))
When the east coasters are too scared to ship west to run against Zenyatta and a "dominate" mare like Zenyatta is winning every Grade I for three straight years (2008, 2009, 2010), it leaves no room for other fillies or mares to be a Grade I winner. Once you understand this, then you can begin to wrap your mind around the concept of how "dominating" Zenyatta was. Also, please explain this to me: Why did Rachel Alexandra duck Zenyatta for 5 million dollars (AKA: Apple Blossom)?
@runwildnfree I have been watching races for quite a few years and love this sport. I must say though that Rachel A beating Zenyatta out of Horse of the Year after all of the terrible horses she beat was the biggest travesty that I have ever encountered in this sport. Mind you now, this is after Zenyatta won the BC classic.
Mind you now RA won this after doing something no other female horse has ever done....Multiple times. She even raced twice more than Zenyatta that year, so how was it a travesty? The biggest travesty I ever saw was giving it to her in 2010 over the horse who completed the most in 2010 just because she was the people's horse. Horse Racing is swiftly becoming a media engulfed petting zoo to give the prom queen the top prize because everyone like her the most.
@queenluciaa Excuse me, are you serious? So what your saying is that only pertains to Zenyatta and not RA. I have a question. Why do you think they didn't run this over rated horse in any BC races? Were they SCARED?
In April of 2009, when the Jacksons had bought Rachel Alexandra the blatantly stated they weren't going to race her in the BC because they had already mapped out a taxing campaign for her. They wouldn't have been dodging Zenyatta either way since she hadn't even started her campaign yet that year. Which is another reason why she didn't deserve it both times, the award goes to the Horse Of The YEAR. Which of course pertains to the horse who raced all year.
It's lovely how you totally disregard all I have to say, then once again yell "ZeNyAtta wud have been better!!!1111" It really speaks to me how I shouldn't take you seriously.
@apachespook71 You are Hysterical. Best filly you ever saw. I don't know how old you are and you probably never saw Ruffian or Landaluce run. If you ever saw either of these two great horses run, you would NEVER make that statement. RA beat absolutely TERRIBLE horses. The three yr old's she beat were just AWFUL. The field she beat in the Woodward were just a bunch of high price allowance horses and not very good one's at that. When she had to meet good horses, they didn't run her.
@thebeavear1965 they both ran against bad horses only time zen ever faced anything half decent was in the bcc and older horses here in america are horrible anymore because if they are half decent they get reitired during or after their 3 year old season.zarkava would have smahed both of them if you want to talk about an all time great there you go.
@thebeavear1965 wow you dont know who zarkava is and you follow horse racing?well ill let you know she is the best mare by far in quite a bit of time.im sure you know who goldikova is well she smahed her twice if that gives you any indication and she smashed any hoprse male or femlale she ever raced against.
Wow,HDG did it! Crazy thing is she isn't the only filly this year who could pull off beating colts! Blind Luck? Zazu? Add any number of others! Fillies are run against colts all the time in europe. It may seem a novelty to us simply because we tend not to do it! It was common here at one time!
Havre de Grace is now the #1 HotY contender. Now let's see if Blind Luck wins the BCC? Although she tends to win by very little, I believe BL is the superior filly. She beat HdG more times and spotted weight doing it. BL is still the reigning champ of her generation but HdG looks to be the leading HotY this year.
I've said it before, HdG vs BL rivalry is the RA vs Z rivalry we never got without the hype. Same age too, so no excuses if one got too old or is too young.
So your saying after 3 losses BL can win HOTY? Gracie has lost once this year, by a nose because Hollendorfer whined like a little bitch so Blind Luck could have her weight advantage. When it's equal weight in the BCLC or the BCC Gracie wins. She's the toughest horse in the country right now, and I think the only horses that can take her down are either Tizway or Stay Thirsty.
Blind Luck has beaten Havre de Grace four times out of the six times they have met. Blind Luck has flown back east (multiple times) and has over 32,000 miles in the air to prove it. Those whining bitches (Larry Jones and Rick Porter) aren't worth the power to blow up. This is why Jerry Hollendorfer is in the HOF and Larry Jones is holding his dick.
That's a good true DB. But you failed to acknowledge that this hasn't happened THIS YEAR. So-cal nuts fail to understand that horse of the year anoints the horse who has done the best of the year. While Blind Luck has one win over Gracie this year by a nose, Gracie has already beaten her by about 5 lengths. And she has pretty much man-handled the majority of the older division of males. Hollendorfer is running scared to the Cali division of the oso prestigious Lady's Secret. Typical.
Havre De Grace had a lackluster performance in the Beldame, only demoloshing Alabama winner and possibly the toughest 3 yo. distance filly in the nation by about 7 lengths.
Blind Luck absolutely clobbered the field by hanging back; way back... for the whole race.
Literally.
Now, while Gracie is basking in her much deserved glory; Blind Luck is getting tested for having a 'bad' day. Tell me again, who won a HOTY with a last place finish under their belt?
@DBJKAJ Actually Blind Luck will be lots of studs' bitch... she's being sold as a broodmare while Gracie is on the table for HOY... sorry... BL had a couple of days in the sun.. Gracie is on track to be a legend.
Typical.
Now let's see if Blind Luck should enter the BC Classic instead of being pointed to the Lady's Secret as a prep. Sound familiar?
HVG-RA = Eastern speed (beat boys first)
Z-BL = Western closers (dirt/synth winners who went on to be champions prior to their female rival)
HVG beat a better Woodward field than Rachel, although RA was only 3, had a better time, and dealt with a faster pace. RA is superior at their peak, but Gracie is better with age.
Classy mare making a big name for herself. Splits weren't crazy, It set up beautifully for her. And a fantastic stalk and pounce ride by THE SLEDGEHAMMER Ramon Dominguez.. Viva Havre de Grace !!!
@Venckman It would be awesome if Gracie wins the BCC & then HOY. When (if ever) has HOY gone to females 3 yrs in a row? And 3 different ones at that...
If Gracie doesn't win, but Goldikova does win her 4th in a row? Gotta be HOY...
You speak the truth, sir, it is a grand time for the fillies/mares! May this golden age continue :)
Actually that is not true....we are in an age of really bad and pathetic male and handicap horses...That's the honest truth....In Havre de Grace we will have another HOY that cannot win at an open G1 10 furlongs.....Zenyatta at least deserved HOY....Rachel and Havre are the best of a weak bunch of horses.....
Congratulations Havre de Grace 2011 Horse of the Year!

Rachel won by head in an optional claimer field in 09 and was never the same.
Havre De Grace easily handled a much better field, then romped by 8 without being asked in her next outing.

Yeah, baby! We're in such a golden age of marvelous females right now, it's just a joy to behold!

@Venckman
