U2 inspired me to learn guitar and I loved their music for many years. Alas I think U2 lost their way, they are a now a brand and the band members are now tax dodging greedy bastards.
I saw U2 at a small theater in Buffalo a few weeks before they played this show. My friend and I went with few expectations since we were only familiar with a couple songs from "War". We basically saw the same show they played at Red Rocks and were blown away. You could have heaqrd a pin drop as everyone filed out. Truly brilliant.
- my sister like's the rest-of 'em yes,the edge is over-it,here like never before or after. he can stand next to pagey&jack on this track on this night.
FLAT OUT..best concert in the early MTV daze..the ambience of the show..with the misty weather...seeing their breaths..was a magical night..wish i couldve been there..
this is close to the full version. There is a line cut out when he is singing while raising the flag. I have one of the 500 vinyl albums with the line "la la la la la America, la la la la la America" before he sings 2, 3, 4. This is good stuff though....fantastic line band back in the day. Just crazy good.
@tsch38301 Oh you're right, if you download an old under a blood red sky cd, they have the full version of electric co in germany, with the snippet of send in the clowns (la la la la america), fuckin sondhein and his fuckin royalties, besides, they paid him or the company with the rights 100000 dollars for damages...
@gdub454 ....wow brother.....wow ...so much fun....every time I see this I just want to explode with a smile on my face ....this is what rock is all about....in its live form....raw and fun
You're right, this version is only on the movie "Under a Blood Red Sky". The version from the mini album "Under a Blood Red Sky" is shot in Germany at the Rockpalast festival, Loreley in 1983 and can be seen here:
The U.S. with our 307 hundred million population has been unable to produce anything like this and Ireland has under a 5 million population. Every U.S. state should be producing "U2"s.
My favorite U2 song, still gives me goosebumps. They had a bit of that rage still. Searing guitars and the abandon of youth. I remember shuddering my dorm with U2 in 1982 with "Like A Song", my second favorite U2 song. They lost me a bit in the 90's but won me back by playing Where the Streets Have No Name at the Superbowl after 9/11. Didn't expect that and it was truly epic.
As many times as I see & hear this show, I cannot imagine what it must have been like to actually have been there in person..before the hype, when their music was still developing... the crispness of their sound. Still so close to Punk.
This album was my first exposure to U2 when it was released.
2...3..4.......2..3...4 Why must I hide from myself.... Where are the crowd? I love the corwds.
This's the version that they can no longer release on the EP because of the send in the Clowns reference.
the odds that these 4 group of kids overcame is just astounding. they never had formal training, religion almost separated the group at one point. just incredible. u2 was really meant to be.
i've never seen any musician put so much work into a song like the edge since pete tonwsend. Before i saw this video i used to listen to it and wonder how one man was making all that sound.
@tannazia this is one of the most retarded comments by far on here. Number one the sound of a band ALWAYS changes. Bono's voice obviously can't stay the same it was 20 some years ago. As far as the rest of the sound goes, its all edge from there. Edge's sound at that point was his guitar through a delay pedal with a little distortion. you cant have the same sound for 30 plus years and expect people to still want to listen to you.
@tannazia you know what? thats pretty funny that you mention the Stones. i was going to use them as an example. In my opinion the stones are a boring group. every album its the same sound. they have no creativity. yes they're a legendary rock group BUT they have never gone out of their comfort zone and done anything rediculously new. o and by the way u2 will pass the stones for highest grossing tour all time pretty soon. u2 is averaging 65,000 a night !!! which is double the stones audience.
@u2MRtheFLY They go with what works bud. Much like other bands like AC/DC and even Rush. But you'll probably end up saying they are boring to. Everyone know's you're a U2 fanboy but realize that there are some who don't care for the 'new U2' sound. So if you're into the Zoo era or the 360 with Bono relying on Autotune because he lost his unique voice then what's the point of it all. U2 is a pop band, not rock. Get over it
@tannazia lol. bono doesnt use auto tune. ac/dc and rush are not boring they're actually great bands. if u2 was a pop band then why arent they anywhere in the charts today? i consider u2 'soft rock'. just because they dont play hard rock doesnt mean they arent rock.
Also, All That You Can't Leave Behind - The Present is definetly more pop-y (especially ATYCLB), but U2 is a rock band. Boy - Pop (funny, its called Pop, but it's rock) is defineltly, without a doubt, rock.
@BaseballPie Autotune is used at the Producer level when the singer's off key slightly. It's not just for that bullshit t-pain crap. There are some who like the old U2 and there are some who like the new U2 and then there are some who love it all. You people really get defensive. Sit back and enjoy the music. The rest, is history... Cheers
Proving once again that the coolest member of any band is the bassist. Clayton just fucking killing it. He pushes this song along like a guy with a nail gun driving roofing nails through your chest wall.
This is when U2 WAS TOTALLY COOL..now they blow..Bono full of himself..all the politic nonsense.... but i member this was on Sat Nite concerts MTV...MAN SEEMS LIKE A LIFETIME AGO...
@woutereppink Oh come on. It wasn't that bad. Some songs on there were decent for sure. Still, it wasn't nearly their best, but when they played all the Horizon songs during the 360 tour, they all sounded awesome. They were 50 times better than the album versions.
@woutereppink Aha. I hadn't even heard of that album, and I consider myself a pretty up to date fan. Though I guess there's a reason I hadn't heard about it.
This song is much better live than on the album. U2's earlier years were the best. They had soul and raw energy. As Brian Eno once said about them: "They come from strength and limitations". For me it went down hill after The Joshua Tree. I'm sure a lot of bands will be influenced by their music and it's already starting. For me, they will remain a cult band forever.
Esta fue la mejor epoca de U2 lejos, sonaban bien poderosos, la guitarra de The Edge era descomunal en estos shows, definitivamente este es el mejor U2 en vivo de todos !!!!!!!
This is U2 at their best. I think it went downhill from Live at Red Rocks. The raw energy they had descended into a spiral of pop schlock starting with The Unforgettable Fire and ending with whatever drivel they have lately cranked out. When they were telling everybody about their lives and Ireland, they were cool. When they started posing to save the world, they started sucking.
@dncstevens , what a load of bull. you repeat the same old crap that is been said about U2 by people who don't like em. Did they become too popular, not an indy band? Can't seperate the music from what Bone does outside U2?no small hall but a huge stadium-big (multi-national) band? it's still the music, here they only show a fraction of what they had in them. still learning. If you can't see that and just repeat what has been said over and over, stick with the next Indy band.
i was just at Rush concert at Red Rocks...it truly is a special place...Denver you are lucky to have it!...Just curious..does anyone know the attendance of this famous U2 show? i heard capacity is 9,450
@RawheadRex72, blonde afro and black hipster attire is way more entertaining such as from 1980-1982. Pedestrian 'down to earth' clothing is for....'pedestrians' at the pub and sushi bar.
2 years before the performance at live aid that propelled them into superstardom. So much energy and desire. Saw them in Cardiff on the Joshua Tree tour 87 and have to say it was one of the best gigs ever promoting the best album ever written in my opinion.
Red Rocks had a capacity of 7000 but since it was pissing rain the day of the show and the one before (and stopped about two hours before the show), very few people showed up.
I am reading their book right now (U2 by U2) and they say only about one third of the capacity showed up and this is the main reason why there is so few crowd shots in the video.
P174 and 175 of the book for those who need it it...
I was a walking advert for these guys back then, i was quite sad really, but i was only 15. Despite the massive live productions they put on these days nothing can compare to this concert. For some inexplicable reason everything just happened that night to make it so memorable...the venue, the lighting, the crowd, the atmosphere, the sound system & the rain. They nailed it, & i dont think they ever managed to achieve anything near as good since. Quality posting! love it!!
I could care less how popular they were in the early 80s- this version of this song with a snippet of "send in the clowns" is amazing. When they played it in the Vertigo tour it was still great.
To me, this concert always represented a high-water mark in their performances. They may have become more popular, but they never surpassed the magical quality of this show. A magnificent, soaring song! Thank you very much for sharing.
@NsteveA At their peak?? sorry, don't think so! This was a classic concert from 1983's War tour. Four years prior to their hugely popular Joshua Tree album and subsequent tour. Their true peak came during their 1991-1992-1993 Zoo TV era.
Probably my alltime favorite U2 moment, and come to think of it, watching Red Rocks on MTV for the first time in the early 80s is what first made me a U2 fan, this part in particular, when he climbs to the top with the torches in the rain and fog and the helicopter searchlight and he goes "SHHHHHH" and then "two three four", I was just totally blown away by it and still am.
Definitely at their peak....they were absolutely amazing. I thought it was just because i was a little kid, but this is The Edge and all of them at their best.
I love U2 and there's no doubt that this music is incredible, but are you suggesting they peaked in the 3rd year of a career that's spanned 30 years and still going strong?
for me, take away all the success, just look at the performance and it looks to me like they had the most passion then. They were really jamming out in this and feeding off the crowd. Often times the ride up....trying to break out of the crowd of new bands and make your mark is when a band is best. They are fighting for everything and they were awesome then.
Although they have great concerts and are amazing live I am just not into stadium shows. These youtube recordings/dvds are better sounding than what a live concert sounds like unless you are one of the fortunate ones to be within 100 ft of the stage.
U2 inspired me to learn guitar and I loved their music for many years. Alas I think U2 lost their way, they are a now a brand and the band members are now tax dodging greedy bastards.

Quality posting! love it!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, U2..

The 80's was their absolute height as a live band.
Didn't see their last tour, but from what I heard (from even the most devoted fans)
it may be time for them to walk away :(

They should get Krusty to sing the bridge.

I could care less how popular they were in the early 80s- this version of this song with a snippet of "send in the clowns" is amazing. When they played it in the Vertigo tour it was still great.

They look so young!
If they only knew what was awaiting them from this live onwards,
from a small Irish political band to worldwide fame as a POP band.

To me, this concert always represented a high-water mark in their performances. They may have become more popular, but they never surpassed the magical quality of this show. A magnificent, soaring song! Thank you very much for sharing.

@rocketman63 Very well stated. Magical, so true.

U2 at their peak.
NsteveA 1 year ago 2
@NsteveA At their peak?? sorry, don't think so! This was a classic concert from 1983's War tour. Four years prior to their hugely popular Joshua Tree album and subsequent tour. Their true peak came during their 1991-1992-1993 Zoo TV era.

This song was written about a school friend of theirs that went off the deep end and had electro-shock therapy. No joke.

Under a Blood Red Sky established U2 as the best live band in the world. When you see this its easy to see why.
Absolutely Brilliant.........

I was at home for X-mas and my dad was playing one of U2's recent live DVDs and this song was on it....
It sounded so massive and sinister. Amazing how they could mix a song from 30 years ago into a recent set list and make it sound so good.
Its the true power of this best band on the planet.

I thought it was just because i was a little kid, but this is The Edge and all of them at their best.
klars2000 2 years ago
I love U2 and there's no doubt that this music is incredible, but are you suggesting they peaked in the 3rd year of a career that's spanned 30 years and still going strong?
Just asking.....
JB4375 2 years ago
for me, take away all the success, just look at the performance and it looks to me like they had the most passion then. They were really jamming out in this and feeding off the crowd. Often times the ride up....trying to break out of the crowd of new bands and make your mark is when a band is best. They are fighting for everything and they were awesome then.
klars2000 2 years ago
Although they have great concerts and are amazing live I am just not into stadium shows. These youtube recordings/dvds are better sounding than what a live concert sounds like unless you are one of the fortunate ones to be within 100 ft of the stage.
