People saying that there's only three types of a British accent?? What about people up in London, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, etc? All sound quite different.
There isn't a BRITISH accent. Britain is THREE separate countries and they all have different accent. I don't get why people say British accent because you're either English, Welsh or Scottish!
Yes, Wales is in Britain so it is regarded as a British accent in national terms, but Welsh in regional terms. I know as I am Welsh and was very surprised to learn Matthew was too. He's awesome!
Wales may be a country in Britain, but there's no such thing as a British accent! It'd be like saying 'oh you live in Europe, you have a European accent!'
there is a distinction between nationality and ethnicity people! He's a British National. He's Celtic-Welsh and they don't consider themselves English. Everyone should watch the interview when he's on Craig Ferguson show. English people are Anglo-Saxon. Welsh are native to the British Isles. The ancestors of the English are local and invaders from Northern countries intermixed.
British Accent is correct. I have an English accent, but that doesn't inform you what type of English accent I have. It just informs you that this is the area where my accent derives. It doesn't matter which area of England I come from, my accent is generally English. As is the fact that it is British, regardless of whether I hail from England, Scotland or Wales; my accent is still British.
@cashernandes1 well yeah but its like saying so and so has an american accent and america has a vast number of very differnt accents. there's no such thing as a british accent. britain includes wales england scotland and northern ireland in which are completely different accents.
@cashernandes1 I don't deny that it is 'correct' to call his accent British, but I think it would be better to refer to it as a Welsh accent. The whole movement to revitalize the Welsh language in the 20th century stemmed in part from a desire of the Welsh to assert themselves as an independent and unique nation within the British hemisphere. I like to think that they wanted to avoid generalities such as the one we are commenting on. You are right, but let's give the Welsh their proper due.
@stefabang Yeah, agreed. I'd say he's got a Welsh accent rather than a British one, just as one is more likely to say that someone has got a Scottish accent (even though it is still British). What I meant is that it is incorrect to state that he HASN'T got a British accent!
It may be correct that he is from Britain but there is no such thing as a 'British Accent'....Funny for someone from Brazil to comment on British accents and to assert what is and isn't British....
Theres English, Irish & Scottish - We all differ greatly but one thing I can tell you is if you approach any of these groups and compare there accent to there neighbours you wouldn't of made a great start making friends!
@Kuunz420 I know there is no such thing as "British accent". But you can call it British. As I said before, it's much more appropriate to call it Welsh of course, but it doesn't mean it's not British. Following the same lines we could never say someone has a Brazilian accent as opposed to a European one. Or take German and Swiss German. Ignorance? Funny for a BRITON to assert that whatever comes from Wales is not British...
@Kuunz420 And that fact that you're from Britain and I'm not doesn't make me any less capable of discussing this. Otherwise, how could we describe something that comes from Africa as "African" even though we're not from this continent? "African Portuguese" doesn't help much, we'd rather say someone has an Angolan accent. Still, it doesn't make it wrong. And you guys are saying that a Welsh accent is not a British accent, and THAT's incorrect, though it's not as clear as saying Welsh.
@cashernandes1 At which point did I actually state that Wales was not part of Britian? Silly of me to assume that seeing as the video was based on a Welsh man you would of realised they were included in my comment but unfortunately I had run out of room. Again - dont tell me what is and isnt British as I have 20 years more experience of it then you EVER will. Now ask yourself this, are you chatting shit or eating bricks.. Either way your gonna get your teeth broken ;)
@Kuunz420 Funny for a person whose mother-tongue is supposedly English to constantly make spelling mistakes, such as the ones in "there accent to there neighbours". THEIR accent and THEIR neighbours, silly. I guess if you can't even get THAT right you're not in the slightest qualified to debate this ultimately irrelevant subject. And it doesn't seem an awful lot of people disagree with me, quite the contrary... lol
@Kuunz420 The Welsh accent is not the same as an English accent. They are separate countries. Wales is not part of England and he may well be offended. I know I would be as i am from Wales.
@cashernandes1 Um, no. Actually there is no such thing as a "British" accent. There isn't even really a such thing as an "English" accent. There's cockney (spoken in the London region), scouse (spoken in Liverpool), geordie (spoken in Newcastle), and a whole range of very different accents, which sound wildly different from each other and are very distinct. Matthew Rhys is Welsh, and speaks with a South Wales accent. It is NOT correct to call his accent BRITISH.
@ldsc3652 oh for god's sake. and you expect all the people in the world to fucking know all that shit? who the fuck even cares. gosh. you just wanna show off.
@ZacHeartVanessa no, I don't expect everyone to know details of accents. But I also don't expect people to casually lump people, languages, identities, cultures, histories, etc all together and pretend like they are the same thing and interchangeable. And how is it fair that you get to show off your ignorance of the ethnic cultures of the British Isles but I can't show my knowledge of it?
@ldsc3652 yes. because that's EXACTLY what i wanted to accomplish. admit that im a stupid ass who doesnt know everything. just the thing i wanted to " show off " ? there are millions of thins more important for me to acknowledge in this world then that. so please, my apologies.
@cashernandes1 its like saying he has a european accent. all the parts that make up europe are so diverse and different the same as the differences atleast in accent as scotlannd wales england so.. whilst it would be right to say he's from britain there is no such thing as a british accent
Welsh is just one of the accents that are spoken in Britain. The united kingdom is made up of Welsh, Scottish, and northern Ireland, these are all British accents because they are a part of Britain. England is also a part of Britain, each country has it's own accents but they are all British.
So Mathew does in fact have one of many British accents, the Welsh, Scots, and English are all proud of their individual countries, but are all British!
@nessapaige The Welsh accent is not the same as an English accent. They are separate countries. Wales is not part of England and he may well be offended. I know I would be as i am from Wales.

geez whats wrong with people. you could call it welsh, british or european. they'd all be right!
and yes, a brazilian has a south american accent because brazil is on the continent of s. america.
and someone from the usa has a north american accent because they come from the continent of n. america.
the fact that the usa decided to make the word 'american' just apply to them is another argument altogether!
