Yes, Wales is in Britain so it is regarded as a British accent in national terms, but Welsh in regional terms. I know as I am Welsh and was very surprised to learn Matthew was too. He's awesome!

there is a distinction between nationality and ethnicity people! He's a British National. He's Celtic-Welsh and they don't consider themselves English. Everyone should watch the interview when he's on Craig Ferguson show. English people are Anglo-Saxon. Welsh are native to the British Isles. The ancestors of the English are local and invaders from Northern countries intermixed.

It is A British accent, one of many, many British accents so it is correct, but it would be MORE correct and more specific to call it a WELSH accent.

British Accent is correct. I have an English accent, but that doesn't inform you what type of English accent I have. It just informs you that this is the area where my accent derives. It doesn't matter which area of England I come from, my accent is generally English. As is the fact that it is British, regardless of whether I hail from England, Scotland or Wales; my accent is still British.

@cashernandes1 I don't deny that it is 'correct' to call his accent British, but I think it would be better to refer to it as a Welsh accent. The whole movement to revitalize the Welsh language in the 20th century stemmed in part from a desire of the Welsh to assert themselves as an independent and unique nation within the British hemisphere. I like to think that they wanted to avoid generalities such as the one we are commenting on. You are right, but let's give the Welsh their proper due.

Theres English, Irish & Scottish - We all differ greatly but one thing I can tell you is if you approach any of these groups and compare there accent to there neighbours you wouldn't of made a great start making friends!

Otherwise, how could we describe something that comes from Africa as "African" even though we're not from this continent? @cashernandes1 Um, no. Actually there is no such thing as a "British" accent. There isn't even really a such thing as an "English" accent. There's cockney (spoken in the London region), scouse (spoken in Liverpool), geordie (spoken in Newcastle), and a whole range of very different accents, which sound wildly different from each other and are very distinct.  Matthew Rhys is Welsh, and speaks with a South Wales accent. It is NOT correct to call his accent BRITISH.

Welsh is just one of the accents that are spoken in Britain. The united kingdom is made up of  Welsh, Scottish, and northern Ireland, these are all British accents because they are a part of Britain. England is also a part of Britain, each country has it's own accents but they are all British.

So Mathew does in fact have one of many British accents, the Welsh, Scots, and English are all proud of their individual countries, but are all British!
