  • This is great. Seeing Suzuki sensei perform this at full speed is impressive.

  • Pleas Read! Good vid! you really helped me! Today i got a Performance to do Pinan Nidan,Pinan Shodan & Pinan Sandan! I hope i get Gold!=)

  • Note that the first movement is a tettsu uke (hammer block) done from mahanmi-no-neko-dachi, translated literally "half body cat stance." This is different from neko-dachi or your normal cat stance assumed towards the end of the kata. This is how Otsuka, the founder of Wado-Ryu, taught it.

  • thanks this helped me out for my grading i wasn't sure about the end of it but now i know i am right thank you

  • good luck man

  • i learned this white belt

  • In my karate class this is exactly the same except the first move is a catstance and a hammer block. I need this kata to get my third belt (orange)

  • I've just taken up Wadu Ryu.......what video is this taken from? Would love to try and get my hands on a copy.....

  • its' amezing !!!

  • um, in my karate this is pinan shodan, you need to know this for green belt, so I don't think this is a blackbelt kata because I am a Blue belt...

  • @Jeffyboy849 hi itsw alern movie heis teh top in wado ryu karate...

  • I do wado Kai and this Kata is first even though it supose to be after Pinan Shodan, however they changed it because they believe that Pinan Shodan in more techniqually difficult which is true there is more complex moves like Shoto Uke and Morote Uke ( Don't know if spelt it right), and outer blocks, so that is the reason why Pinan Nidan is first instead of second :)

  • Big help! Arigato!

After reaching my brown belt about two years ago I had to finish my training as my parents divorced. I am now intersted in taking Wado Ryu up yet again and would love to brush up my skills and these videos are very professional and helpful.

    Thanks again ^.^

  • what style is this? i'm a balck and white in wado ryu lol.

  • I think this is the best one!

  • pinan shodan our second kata although it suposed to be first, then nidan is our first but suposed to be 2nd, ich ni then san 1 2 3 exuse the spelling of numbers

  • this is our 1 st kata, 2 nd kata is shodan,

  • So you don't do first or second basic kata?

  • i am zebraworld but i changed my account! no my tutuor says it is pinan nidan, but i do wado kai karate, and this is our 2nd kata.

  • This looks very similar to heian shodan in Shotokan. Are you sure that this isn't called pinan "SHODAN?" Pardon me for my lack of knowledge about the pinans. I just want to get it straight. Oss.

  • Never mind. I think I remember reading that Master Funakoshi changed the order. He felt that pinan nidan was easier to learn than Shodan. Thus, he taught nidan first, and made it heian shodan. Good training. Oss.

  • Sorry I ran out of space! SENIOR BROWN is Nai Hanchi - Sei Shan - Chinto!

    Again, thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for posting this I have recently took an early grading to become a yellow belt instead of waiting because my sensei thought I was good, but when I was taught I couldn't remember the kata! I do Wado Kai karate and we have those katas too, I think. My grading syallabus says....

YELLOW Pinan Nidan GREEN Pinan Shodan Pinan Sandan BLUE Pinan Yodan Pinan Yodan PURPLE Pinan Yodan Pinan Godan JUNIOR BROWN Kushanku Plus Examiners choice of Pinan Kata MIDDLE BROWN Kushanku & Nai Hanchi SENIOR BROWN

  • Well done on getting your yellow belt!

Where do you do Wado Kai?

  • very powerfully done

  • hey all, great video.

I'm relearning some karate to catchup to near the standard i was before (brown)

I've forgoten which kata's respond to which belt (aaah!) any1 know the names? or which belt pinan nidan is?

    cheers

  • This is what is written in my garding syllabus, doubtless others will disagree:-

8th Kye (Yellow) - No Kata

7th Kyu (Orange - Pinan Nidan

6th Kyu (Green) - Pinan Shodan, Pinan Sandan

    friendly greetings,

    Jaron Legel

  • oh thank you! :) haha yeah i know! i cant wait for my first yudansha! it sounds awsome! thanks again!

    lewis :)

  • he is almost stumbeling at one point lol

  • This is really cool! :D

I see alot of how my sensei has taught me in this. The person did awesome! :]

  • ths the second 1 i learned sick i didnt think people ould put stuff like this on youtube

  • it's bad perfomed

  • Well... show us YOURS.

  • Todays Special Effects :p

  • BEWARE DHARMA INITIATIVE

  • Sorry. You've 'lost' me.

  • omg people call it pinan shodan at my class D:

  • t be honest i stopped caring that you guy are wrong a long time ago. arge amonst yourselves and keep me out of it i know i am right and that is all i need to know.

  • Your a fuckhead. Do some research.

  • you are so imature just admit im right

  • Yeah, that was pretty immature of me. But seriously man, do some research, different styles call the first two pinan/heian katas by different names, its really thay simple, theres no "right" or "wrong" one to practice first to call call "shodan" or "nidan" its just a preferance of the style and teachers.

  • IM not saying that all types of karate are the same i am mad that people are telling me my style is fake. How would they even know? I understand that many katas are given different names and I can respect that. I just want them to do the same

  • Fair enough. People say my style is fake too. But thats because it mostly is. Hahahahaha, self tought karate really isnt looked to highly upon. Yet when I show my techiques, katas or fight people, they always wanna know how long and in what style i've trained in. So long as you understand that nothing is ever set in stone I guess...

  • Not done this in ages. quit wado ryu after 2 and a half years :/ ahwell lol

  • very interesting. at my school(adamsons karate studuos if you are curious,) this is pinan shodan and pinan shodan is pidan nidan. very intersting. the also taught me to lift my arm upwards on the chops.very interesting

  • you must be mistaken pinan shondan is a later cutter, check with your instructor, if he gets this wrong he is a fake.

  • well mabye this guy is a fake, mabye your instuctor is a fake. pinan shodanis the beginning as far as i am concerend. i am not trying to be an ass or anything but my instuctors father was named owner of his own system and they have been around since 1977, so i think they know what they are talking about

  • tatsuo suzuki is not a fake!

  • 14 year olds should not be allowed to comment on masters!

  • The correct way to teach Katas is to do Pinan Shodan first, then Nidan, but some styles choose to teach Nidan first, as it has no kick's so therefore is 'easyier.' So the way you have learnt it is proberly correct and named wrongly.

  • this isnt pinan nidan though, it is pinan shodan. people have reversed it

  • Shodan means first, nidan means second. Don't put so much importance in the words. This kata is actually the second (thus 'nidan'), but some styles choose to teach it as the first kata (Wado, for example). I guess sometimes it's also renamed to fit this pattern. Traditionally it's still called Nidan in Wado, though.

  • "Pinan Nidan: Trainees of Wadoryu karate generally start with this kata before Pinan Shodan. The number of techniques in this kata is fewer than Pinan Shodan and the movements in this kata are more fundamental..."

Pinan Shodan is not an easy kata for beginners, so it is often taught second because the techniques are mainly based on "dobule moment" principle.

-From Karate Katas of Wadoryu by Shingo Ohgami

  • I am 4th dan black belt and have been doing Karate (Wado Ryu) and both pinan nidan and pinan shodan are the starting katas. the one that is introduced to you first is whatever one your sensai choses to teach first. I came second in a kata competition using pinan shodan as my kata of choice. this is NOT pinan shodan but pinan nidan. good vid btw :)

  • i beg to differ friend i am a 4th dan black belt (shore kai) as well. and I am a two time midwest karate champion. and this is atually pinan shodan. pinan nidan is a novice ranking kata and is with pinan godan and one more which i believe is pinan sandan. the beginner katas are pinan shodan and kehon i agree though good video

  • this is pinan nidan. pinan shodan starts with a double square block. in korea this is called pyung ahn nidan. in shotokan it's called heian shodan. funakoshi switched them.

  • no it doesnt this is pidan shodan. im sorry but i am right and you are wrong at as far as my schools way of teaching.

  • yes it does search for it, plenty of videos of it. yours is the only school that does it that way, because to everyone else this is pinan nidan (wado, shito, shorin..pretty much everybody). yes it is taught first, but it is called pinan nidan because originally it was 2nd. thats why funakoshi changed the names, because pinan nidan is easier and began to be taught first. what style do you study?

  • there are 5 pinan kata. shodan, nidan, sandan, yondan (or yodan), and godan.

  • shorei kai/shorei kan teaches goju ryu karate from the Toguchi line. if that's what you study you should'nt be doing any pinan kata. the only other "shorei" i know of is kosho shorei ryu kempo, they do the pinan kata, so they may have changed the name. because every japanese/okinawan karate style that teaches these kata call this pinan nidan. sometimes it is taught first however because it's actually easier than pinan shodan.

  • I think this video will really help me. I'm going for 7th kyu soon. But I'm training for Wado Kai and not Wado Ryu. But there aren't any different in styles....I think. And for ambora. we have the cat stance, I can agree with the kicking but it can also be used to avoid a hit by blocking(mainly) it and then a kick to the groin ;P

  • karate is an technique you learn to defend your self ok thank you!

  • the nukite is a simultaneous block-strike to kidney.

XoxK and ambora, you are idiots and certainly not qualified to even comment on someone of Suzuki Sensei's stature...

  • Master Suzuki is the man responsable for bringing Wado to Europe some 40 years ago. Those idiots who are making bad comments about him are being very disrespectful. I am second generation European Wado student (38 years) and like many instructors of wado today I began my training in a dojo which was headed by him. Altough I have trained with many others over the years 'One never forgets one's roots'. To his credit, he is still teaching and training today.

  • I'm quite flabbergasted to read some of the comments here - this man is Tatsuo Suzuki - one of Hironori Ohtsuka direct lineage students. One of the finest karateka in the modern era

This is the man who taught my teacher's teacher. And you could probably add a few more "teacher's" in there for most people reading this - maybe he's right and you're wrong - that seems the likeliest conclusion.

You seem to be ignoring the superb kime. And kime is what it's all about.

  • Hironori Ohtsuka - isn't he the guy in 'Heroes' LOL!! Just kidding - there is very little respect going on here I agree - I used this video to help me learn the kata and I often won the kata comps so it can't be all bad.

Then again in Karate there are always people who 'know better'. Let them delude themselves is all I'd say about that.

  • At the very end, with the low knife hand moves, can you tell me what the bunkai is? Are these strikes or blocks and against what sort of attack?

  • dropping into short cat stance with hands together I see as block/grab/off-balance of a striking hand, the follow-up nukite strike as a kidney strike. But that is just one bunkai of many. I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts.

I wonder if the nukite is actually an arm across/through the throat, arcing them backwards whilst you pull the arm you grabbed at the short cat. In both cases, I'd be pulling that arm

  • Wado has no bunkai in kata. Only kaisetsu which is the physical explanation of the kata's exact movement.

objective: opening up of the body / taisabaki change of enbusen, moving the centre of gravity away from the opponent (backwards seen from torimi). thereby inviting ukemi to change direction and enter. Realise that the nukite is inasu principle. don't assume shiko dachi to suddenly, as one can't avoid the upcoming attack properly. forward movement using shiko dachi always suggest avoidence

  • Great reply WadoNeil. Well said.

  • cool000222 in Chito Ryu which i take pinan shodan is this one, but in many other styles the pinan kata are different.

and kimimaru there isn't even a cat stance in any 5 pinan katas..lol and why would you use cat stance while performing a hammer fist? it's supposed to be done in forward stance..cat stance is more for kicks because the weight is on the back leg..not meant for hammer fists...lol

  • omg this is so so so poorly done he dosnt use 2 hands to block and he dosnt go to cat stance wen he does a hammer fist and wen he is gonna go to the horse stance he dosnt go to the same height that he was bfore.

  • I bet you'd run rings round him in a dark alley, eh?

  • thats pinan shodan not Pinan Nidan !

  • In Wado Ryu style it is Pinan Nidan. Can't say what it is for other diciplines.

  • I've learned to move my head end look at my target before I move. In my dojo I wouldn't have passed my test this way. What Style is that?

  • The style of this video is Wado Rhu - a very early kata aimed at beginners. Turning your head to the target prior to moving is a practical technique but not all moves would involve doing so.

  • i dont think any kata is actually aimed at beginners, when u actually look at it and get down to it in the later stages. I love suzukis style, so fluid and the stances so short and strong - gorgeous

  • Depends on the school I suppose, the very first lesson I had I was thrown into this kata. Some might consider this an unfair technique but it does force you to learn quick.

  • You must be very proud.

  • nope :D not at all : )

  • Well its a very arrogant comment. Post a video of you doing this Kata, then we can judge who is better.

  • When you become half the dan grade this man is then you can coment!

  • no. you cant.

  • Thanks... i was searching that kata for my "belt test" or whatever it is...

  • That would be 'grading' exam.

  • Ok its Grading exam. and i failed it :(!

  • Never mind. Better luck next time.

  • Ok thanks for luck ;) and i'll go try it again in few weeks

  • Going to do it again Tomorrow.... Im so Excited....!!!! :)! I Hope your Luck Will Help Me...

  • Nevermind. Next time better and don't forget to enjoy practice :) Once your getting older you won't bother anymore. (I'm a veteran and started karate at the age of 45)

  • that helped me alot i just learned this kata and i was practicing and couldent remember wich hand went on top on wich turn.thanks alot.

  • why you dont have a draw hand (a prepare hand)

  • I'd answer that question - if I knew what the hell you were on about!
