Wow! FIrst time hearing this band and I'm floored that I've never found them before, and that's from a guy that's played in bands, loved heavy music, has old friends in very successful musical careers and liked to think I knew something about music. These guys have proved me wrong, and the "markets" for fools. I'm not a death growl fan in the least, but this works on a level I've only previously enjoyed in bands like Pain of Salvation and the original thrash band style. I'm sold after one song!!
I love cynic, but I really don't like his vocal effect at all, it just sounds like TPain autotune to me, and I was pretty disappointed that they (as far as I can see) use recordings for the growls. The performances would be 100x better if the vocals (scream/growl) were actually "real" and he laid off the vocal effect occasionally
@Stigma1990 well, there's no vocal effects on the new ep, and they don't use any when they perform it. i've never seen them live, so I don't know whether they don't use it on other tracks nowadays also.
@FranLesPaul I'll have to check it out! Like I said, I love their music I just wish they didn't use the vocal effect. I'm sure I'll like it a LOT more if they don't use it on their new stuff
Apparently Paul Masvidal was diagnosed HIV positive today. This is very tragic. Please donate to the fund on his website to help pay for medical treatment.
@PinkPantherPunk Dude he hasn't done the growls since their demos. The got a guy named Tony Teegarden to do the growls on Focus. This concert used recordings of Teegarden for the growls.
why does everyone who listens to this style call screams growls?they are screaming words.not simply growling which is making a noise that doesnt consist of words.this music sucks.its shitty songs sprinkled with solos and a horrible vocal effect.go listen to memphis may fire.thats a real band.now everyone hate on my comment because ill never see it.
@bloomcry Man you got me good!I feel so dumb now...Not really. You just sound like a fucking dumbass that has no real argument against or for the music you do/don't like.Just like every other moron who listens to this shit.Paul masvidal is awesome. This band sucks. Now let's see if someone is intellegent enough to mount a descent argument...Rhetorical question.
@treacoffill Did you bring some logic arguments ? you are just a gay in love....just engoy your barbie metal and don't waste too much lipstick.just be natural!
@treacoffill Dude, you like Design the skyline... Tells me enough about your musical taste and it makes me wonder how you know of the existence of a band like Cynic. What else do you know? You know Death? At the gates, Monstrosity? Carcass???? But anyway, I'm impressed that you know of these bands, not often do you see posers/hipsters know about bands like Cynic. I don't care if you dislike them or not, I am proud of you
What a mature and detailed opinion you have there. On the contrary, Cynic do not suck. They are my favourate band. Paul Masivdal is a fucking beast of a guitarist and Sean Reinart is the best drummer alive in my opinion. I've listened to they're album "Focus", non-stop for a year now. Highly technical, thought-provoking, soulful, skillful, intelligent music. They may not be to your taste. But just because you don't like them doesn't make them bad.
What? What a stupid argument. How far do you want to take that. Is no band in the world good then? Just because people like other bands doesn't make them good does it amirite? The simple fact is. The music is good. I enjoy it. Thousands of others do. This automatically makes it good music. However if I didn't enjoy it, this wouldn't make it bad, because other people do enjoy it. There isn't really such a thing as bad music. Only bad music in someones opinion.
Hey, you've listened to Focus for over a year, I started to listen to Traced in Air and the sound quality is so much better that I just can't enjoy Focus anymore for some reason... You got the same problem?
Oh and you know Steve DiGiorgio? Also an amazing fretless bassist, I really like his jazz project Dark Hall and his band Sadus with the album Elements of Anger!
@ChainsawVsGod Totally agree, any person who thinks Cynic "suck" just have no knowledge of real music, they certainly are one of the best metal bands around. Creative, interesting and unique. Not to mention, Seam Reinart is a beast of a drummer.
music for the mind, not for the feet. Also the "Veil of Maya" is a philosophical concept: what we take for granted as reality, is merely a facsimile, an illusion, seen through the "veil" as if it were a pair of sunglasses. The dualistic nature of the universe. Check it out on wiki, it will be an interesting read.
@Cauflores1 I believe that;s Kriss Kringle. No, he doesn't deliver toys to children around the world on christmas. lol, I swear that's his name though, he played with them on the Portal demo and he played live with them (obviously) for a while.
I cannot blame the crowd for not cheering and shouting... I myself was amazed and astonished by this pseudo-death/jazz/fusion metal band when I saw them in Istanbul several years ago. WOW, this is amazing! The drum part is the coolest, their bass player rules, jaw-dropping guitar playing, and I really like the weird robot vocals! Getting this album asap.
I just started listening to these guys and theyre really good! They reminde me alot of BTBAM. Also, can anyone download the studio version? I cant find it anywhere! Not saying the live version is bad but id just be nice to listen to the studio version yknow lol
@Metal4life0102 Just search for "Cynic - Focus" online, you can download the whole album. And, if anything, BTBAM should remind you of Cynic and not the other way around, these guys are legends :) If you like BTBAM I can also recommend checking out Gojira, Septic Flesh, Opeth.
I spoke with Paul Masdival once and when i asked him what genre this music was, he said "cynic." I was amused first but then i really realized that no other band on earth had such uniqueness !
It absolutely amazes me how guitar players can be such a conservative old fogey crowd when it comes to guitar design. This is the same restrictive mentality that opponents of the "electric guitar" itself had. Without doubt, the Steinberger has superior engineering aspects, namely ergonomics (balance is PERFECT ... sure you CAN balance a heavy headstock traditional guitar, but why not progress?) Never mind rock solid stable tuning/bridge system.
Cynic isn't really the band you would go crazy to, like mosh and stuff. I say it's a more 'sophisticated' death metal. It's the kind of music you just get lost into, and just think...
@HayabusaNoTsuchi Yeah, sure but you will ALWAYS have a counter-balance to the guitar's body weight. This means you have to keep it up or strap up REALLY tight. Whereas, with Steinberger, the fretboard stays in the same place the whole time.
@LessthanJake14 I'm nowhere near ready for on-stage performance, so that doesn't matter to me. Either way, I can't get over the lack of a headstock; I've just always disliked the look.
@HayabusaNoTsuchi Fair enough, Steinbergers are a marmite (love it or hate it) situation. And it's also true that the headstock is sometimes the defining piece of a guitar.
@Hellhammer498 Well this is when Cynic had first reunited, so they just had a recording of the growls being played in the background, but now Cynic found a member that can play guitar (fucking amazingly) and do the growls, his name is Tymon...I got all of their autographs back in August, they are all really cool people
i kinda dont want them to make another ablum because you are gonna here the same thing like the robot voice, the open chords and all of that stuff. im not saying that cynic is bad. i fucking love cynic. but they should stick with the 2 albums...or 4 albums
@jpuma13 Yeah man, I don't see any overt elements of Jazz, though I'm not a rhythm player. I did however notice that they bass and guitars play in a more Jazz and Legit positioning of their instruments. Also the drummer is more thoughtful, usually drummer dominates and sometimes overpowers the rest of the voices of the band, but this guy plays with the band not over it. The solo and general feel of the piece has a lot of well placed space rather than a nonstop musical scream.
there is a really shitty band called veil of maya and they sound nothing like this.

There were two models in the 80's which DID have headstocks, but they weren't received very well.
Surely it makes sense, though. Having no head stops it from being top-heavy.

@LessthanJake14 Bleh. I can hold a guitar just fine with a headstock.
HayabusaNoTsuchi 1 year ago
@HayabusaNoTsuchi Yeah, sure but you will ALWAYS have a counter-balance to the guitar's body weight. This means you have to keep it up or strap up REALLY tight. Whereas, with Steinberger, the fretboard stays in the same place the whole time.
Also, it's incredibly portable.
LessthanJake14 1 year ago
@LessthanJake14 Wouldn't know personally, but that seems like a pretty insignificant amount of weight.

@HayabusaNoTsuchi Just makes it that little bit easier.

@LessthanJake14 I'm nowhere near ready for on-stage performance, so that doesn't matter to me. Either way, I can't get over the lack of a headstock; I've just always disliked the look.
HayabusaNoTsuchi 1 year ago
@HayabusaNoTsuchi Fair enough, Steinbergers are a marmite (love it or hate it) situation. And it's also true that the headstock is sometimes the defining piece of a guitar.

@LessthanJake14 I appreciate the understanding :)

@Hellhammer498 Well this is when Cynic had first reunited, so they just had a recording of the growls being played in the background, but now Cynic found a member that can play guitar (fucking amazingly) and do the growls, his name is Tymon...I got all of their autographs back in August, they are all really cool people

@007Pogo like cynic? Check out exivious. It has two cynic memebers in it. Their music is death jazz/fusion instrumental. Its amazing.

@Jakster840 Thanks dude.

@Jakster840 I don't want to sound like an asshole but what elements of jazz do they have?
jpuma13 1 year ago
@jpuma13 Yeah man, I don't see any overt elements of Jazz, though I'm not a rhythm player. I did however notice that they bass and guitars play in a more Jazz and Legit positioning of their instruments. Also the drummer is more thoughtful, usually drummer dominates and sometimes overpowers the rest of the voices of the band, but this guy plays with the band not over it. The solo and general feel of the piece has a lot of well placed space rather than a nonstop musical scream.

Wow, the autotune sounds like 5 times as gay live. How is nobody throwing stuff at them?
Shadowconscious 1 year ago
@Shadowconscious maybe because it's not auto tune (Vocoder)
