  • there is a really shitty band called veil of maya and they sound nothing like this.

  • Wow! FIrst time hearing this band and I'm floored that I've never found them before, and that's from a guy that's played in bands, loved heavy music, has old friends in very successful musical careers and liked to think I knew something about music. These guys have proved me wrong, and the "markets" for fools. I'm not a death growl fan in the least, but this works on a level I've only previously enjoyed in bands like Pain of Salvation and the original thrash band style. I'm sold after one song!!

  • I love cynic, but I really don't like his vocal effect at all, it just sounds like TPain autotune to me, and I was pretty disappointed that they (as far as I can see) use recordings for the growls. The performances would be 100x better if the vocals (scream/growl) were actually "real" and he laid off the vocal effect occasionally

  • @Stigma1990 well, there's no vocal effects on the new ep, and they don't use any when they perform it. i've never seen them live, so I don't know whether they don't use it on other tracks nowadays also.

  • @FranLesPaul I'll have to check it out! Like I said, I love their music I just wish they didn't use the vocal effect. I'm sure I'll like it a LOT more if they don't use it on their new stuff

  • i wonder if this was an emotional time for paul to perform, it kind of sounds like it when hes singing

  • Why doesn't his guitar have a headstock?

  • @TheAmrator

    Just look up Steinberger guitars.

  • The jazz section of this song is beautiful.

  • Awesome song, but who's doing the screaming???

  • 5:05 ... "ok i've taked the pick now i can go out"

  • I do not like Jazz-fusion cause there's no vocal so i find it boring. But Cynic adds this touch and make it a listening band

  • Damn, Jake Gyllenhaal certainly can make some great music. hahaha

  • why aren't girls taking their clothes off and jumping on stage to catch Paul? XD (this stupid girlish comment had to be done)

  • @AlicePJed Besides this, I love Cynic and can't wait to see them live in Italy on 10th December

  • @AlicePJed So, did you throwed at him all of your clothes?

  • @eche1986 Actually I didn't, but I managed to hug him after the show, during the meet&greet :D

  • Btw can someone tell me what that black thing on the blue Jackson guitar is?

  • i couldnt be more sarcastic when i said slip not is death metal. we all know better than that. read the whole page next time you dumb shit.

  • tampon metal

  • @gogiants668 That's coming from a guy that thinks that "Slipknot" is death metal.

    You sir... you're a douche.

  • 1:20 Oh god! i'm the only one who thinks that sean malone is TRULY having fun playing around? :°D

  • @balthier8989 That's not Sean Malone, guy.

  • @megadark34 Sorry, my bad. Always believed that it was him in this live , and then who is he? °-°

  • @balthier8989 Chris Kringel

  • @balthier8989

And not the dude who think he's Santa, either

  • 0:06

    Love that face xD

  • Sean Reinert fucking rules!

  • Look at that fucking bass

  • Well, the crowd seems as cold as his country Norway

  • 0____0

  • His fucking guitar doesn't have a head!!!!!!!!

  • @0BLACKSABBATH that's because it's a steinberger guitar

  • The audience members that move look retarded.

  • Nice, they audio didnt even pick up pauls guitar....

  • Never thought I'd hear this song done live. Bravo!

  • Man, it's great to see the song live, it's a great song. XD

  • 23 peple clicked the "Dislike" button by mistake with their dropping jaw

  • Yeah you can't really mosh/cheer/shout at a Cynic gig.. the awe is just too paralyzing.

  • If any time I create a band

I will look for a name song of Cynic that I like his name haha

    Veil of maya,textures... hehe

  • @danychi24 there's already a band called "Veil of Maya" :B

  • @InMunhoz

    Yeah I know

Veil of Maya and Textures are two of my favourite bands

  • @danychi24 fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck ! i wanted a band called "Textures" :'(

  • paul cant do the growls anymore?

  • @PinkPantherPunk He never did do them/

  • @PinkPantherPunk Dude he hasn't done the growls since their demos. The got a guy named Tony Teegarden to do the growls on Focus. This concert used recordings of Teegarden for the growls.

  • why does everyone who listens to this style call screams growls?they are screaming words.not simply growling which is making a noise that doesnt consist of words.this music sucks.its shitty songs sprinkled with solos and a horrible vocal effect.go listen to memphis may fire.thats a real band.now everyone hate on my comment because ill never see it.

  • Comment removed

  • @treacoffill Because they're fucking growls. And that "real band" is great...if you're 13 years old

  • @treacoffill memphis GAY fire you mean...!

  • @bloomcry Man you got me good!I feel so dumb now...Not really. You just sound like a fucking dumbass that has no real argument against or for the music you do/don't like.Just like every other moron who listens to this shit.Paul masvidal is awesome. This band sucks. Now let's see if someone is intellegent enough to mount a descent argument...Rhetorical question.

  • @treacoffill Did you bring some logic arguments ? you are just a gay in love....just engoy your barbie metal and don't waste too much lipstick.just be natural!

  • @treacoffill Dude, you like Design the skyline... Tells me enough about your musical taste and it makes me wonder how you know of the existence of a band like Cynic. What else do you know? You know Death? At the gates, Monstrosity? Carcass???? But anyway, I'm impressed that you know of these bands, not often do you see posers/hipsters know about bands like Cynic. I don't care if you dislike them or not, I am proud of you

  • @treacoffill

    "This band sucks"

What a mature and detailed opinion you have there. On the contrary, Cynic do not suck. They are my favourate band. Paul Masivdal is a fucking beast of a guitarist and Sean Reinart is the best drummer alive in my opinion. I've listened to they're album "Focus", non-stop for a year now. Highly technical, thought-provoking, soulful, skillful, intelligent music. They may not be to your taste. But just because you don't like them doesn't make them bad.

  • @ChainsawVsGod And just because YOU Like them doesn't make them good.

  • @VelvetKevorkian

What? What a stupid argument. How far do you want to take that. Is no band in the world good then? Just because people like other bands doesn't make them good does it amirite? The simple fact is. The music is good. I enjoy it. Thousands of others do. This automatically makes it good music. However if I didn't enjoy it, this wouldn't make it bad, because other people do enjoy it. There isn't really such a thing as bad music. Only bad music in someones opinion.

  • @VelvetKevorkian give the man a break, it was not his argument. he said clearly what this band is like and he's right.

  • @ChainsawVsGod

Hey, you've listened to Focus for over a year, I started to listen to Traced in Air and the sound quality is so much better that I just can't enjoy Focus anymore for some reason... You got the same problem?

  • @Brutalyeah

I like Focus much more than Traced in air. I don't think the sound quality is all that much better.

  • @ChainsawVsGod

Maybe I should just buy the CD's instead of download it, lol.

I recently started to buy CD's and Cynic is still on the list.

  • @Brutalyeah

I'd love to buy loads of CDs if I had the money. You should check out Gordian Knot too if you like Cynic. Fucking stunning band.

  • @ChainsawVsGod

    Wow thanks, sounds great!

I recently downloaded Cortlandt, also from Malone and Reinert, awesome jazz album!

  • @ChainsawVsGod

Oh and you know Steve DiGiorgio? Also an amazing fretless bassist, I really like his jazz project Dark Hall and his band Sadus with the album Elements of Anger!

  • @ChainsawVsGod Totally agree, any person who thinks Cynic "suck" just have no knowledge of real music, they certainly are one of the best metal bands around. Creative, interesting and unique. Not to mention, Seam Reinart is a beast of a drummer.

  • @treacoffill you're a fag shut up,

also ironically you come back and reply making your last statement bullshit.

  • music for the mind, not for the feet. Also the "Veil of Maya" is a philosophical concept: what we take for granted as reality, is merely a facsimile, an illusion, seen through the "veil" as if it were a pair of sunglasses. The dualistic nature of the universe. Check it out on wiki, it will be an interesting read.

  • 2:01 sex face.. lol

  • It would have been nice if he did the growls too, but this is still awesome.

  • 4:52 real fan

  • I don't think I could headbang while holding a bass like that..

  • Who is the bassist?

  • @Cauflores1 I believe that;s Kriss Kringle. No, he doesn't deliver toys to children around the world on christmas. lol, I swear that's his name though, he played with them on the Portal demo and he played live with them (obviously) for a while.

  • So this is the main influence of the band Veil Of Maya..

  • @chaotic291 and 100 times better and actually good

  • @chaotic291 No shit, listen to Resistance and then Integral Birth

  • @chaotic291 no the band veil of maya was influenced by a poem not this song

  • Excellent sound, band, music... progresive music.

  • I cannot blame the crowd for not cheering and shouting... I myself was amazed and astonished by this pseudo-death/jazz/fusion metal band when I saw them in Istanbul several years ago. It was... so interesting that I couldn't applaud or cheer because I was in awe, my attention was captured by their sound and songs. It was a legend in flesh and bone before me...

  • defiantly a song to get you through the hard times

  • "I wish it was someone backstage, that would of been interesting. I remember all the crazy ideas Sean and I were throwing around when we learned Teegarden wouldn't do the reunion shows. We considered all kinds of things, like someone in a box center stage, or a projected entity on a video screen......in the end it was literally Teegarden's vocal tracks from Focus, triggered by Sean through a sampler. It was our last resort decision and it did the job I guess."

    -Paul Masvidal

  • Don't get me wrong, I love Cynic... but that's a mighty small backline.

  • Is the crowd deaf or what? lame ass crowd!

  • @shadowdustofficial it seams that they are.... how come no one is moving. grrr...

  • Cynic--Forever Turkey :) Istanbul.

  • paul does the growls with his mind...hahaha! LMAO

  • Bass eargasm :D

  • have they got the screams pre-recorded?

  • I cant even begin to describe how Cynic makes me think and feel.

    Well other than "fuck...."

  • very interesting..

  • How's this for brutal? My guitar is headless!!

  • HOLY MOTHER OF 6 STRING BASS!!! That thing is big! :D

  • @aceenigmax lol you should see the 12 string O_O

  • VEIL OF MAYA!!!!!!!!!!

  • 23 babacas devem ouvir restart e luan satana pau no cu desse trouxa...

  • Cynic: Godly musicians who can write amazing tunes. Not a common combination.

  • Sean Reinert!!!!

  • i really love this band.. the voice for the new album is very creative...

the only thing i dont like is that the old songs HAS TO BE SUNG THE SAME WAY..

    with growls and all that...

  • @guitarralaraja Their new stuff has growls too...

  • WOW, this is amazing! The drum part is the coolest, their bass player rules, jaw-dropping guitar playing, and I really like the weird robot vocals! Getting this album asap.

  • wowww that tanned guy is hot hehe

    i love this song

  • i fell sorry for sean bass drum the all kit is shaking

  • waaaaaaa nonc'è veil of maya studio, sto male!

  • I just started listening to these guys and theyre really good! They reminde me alot of BTBAM. Also, can anyone download the studio version? I cant find it anywhere! Not saying the live version is bad but id just be nice to listen to the studio version yknow lol

  • @Metal4life0102 Just search for "Cynic - Focus" online, you can download the whole album. And, if anything, BTBAM should remind you of Cynic and not the other way around, these guys are legends :) If you like BTBAM I can also recommend checking out Gojira, Septic Flesh, Opeth.

  • Seriously, who the hell is growling? Is it canned? Pre recorded I mean...dunno..

    WHO'S growling?!?!

  • @TubeAmp89 Yeah, pre recorded of Paul, i think someone does them live now though

  • @213213013 Damn, that's Paul's vocals? his growls sound amazing. Much better than Gobel's.

  • @TubeAmp89 it's tony teegarden's vox from the original album

  • veil of maya the band eats this fro breakfast

  • @stovetop67vids ...and I think you're deaf.

  • @stovetop67vids no. VOM would be scared shitless if cynic was on their plate. where u think the young cats got their name from?

  • Comment removed

  • @stovetop67vids 2 different styles of metal

  • like rush's evil twin

  • Paul does the growls with his mind...

  • @huffalmighty Hahaha epic.

  • @huffalmighty I love it!

  • @huffalmighty for real hahaha

  • I spoke with Paul Masdival once and when i asked him what genre this music was, he said "cynic." I was amused first but then i really realized that no other band on earth had such uniqueness !

  • where does the growling come from ? 0_0

  • @dagon940 in studio , it was done by a woman !

  • @dagon940 same question here =s

  • LOL the dude at 0:07 is having the time of his life, like all there :D

  • and to think paul was in death....

  • 4:53 He has accomplished his dream

  • playback growls...

  • 0:19 --> Thomas Haake enjoying Cynic's music ? =D

  • What I love about Cynic is they can take the most disgusting tonalities (b5, minor 2nd) and make them sound fucking beautiful.

  • The vocorder vocals sound really shaky in this... I don't mind the recorded ones but they sounds realllly fragile here

  • Comment removed

  • who is singing growl vocal here?? sorry for my bad englist

  • i wonder how much their sound would change if they used parker guitars?

  • Love that blue Jackson´s guitar, totally thrashy!

Like a lot the instrumental parts

    Not too much the voice

  • It absolutely amazes me how guitar players can be such a conservative old fogey crowd when it comes to guitar design. This is the same restrictive mentality that opponents of the "electric guitar" itself had. Without doubt, the Steinberger has superior engineering aspects, namely ergonomics (balance is PERFECT ... sure you CAN balance a heavy headstock traditional guitar, but why not progress?) Never mind rock solid stable tuning/bridge system.

  • lame ass crowd

  • @WolvesBlesedByACurse totally agree

  • Three solo's at once.

  • Cynic isn't really the band you would go crazy to, like mosh and stuff. I say it's a more 'sophisticated' death metal. It's the kind of music you just get lost into, and just think...

  • @frindle8 philosophical death metal? might be a good term to use to describe this

  • @monochromeEARTH hahaha yeah

  • @frindle8 It's a drinking band for sure.

  • @frindle8 You are correct my friend LOLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  • @BxT4POUTxP Hahaha Hey Daniel.

  • @frindle8 ok so im probly gonna ahted on so bad but i hardly consider them death metal.

  • @claydongreenday Listen to Uroboric Forms.... hopefully it'll change your mind.

  • @frindle8 i'd have a fun time moshing to this

  • @frindle8 The lyrics would take a lifetime to understand.

  • I've never understood headless guitars. I think they look incredibly bizarre.

  • @HayabusaNoTsuchi Steinberger guitars are at the peak of musical technology, fitting pretty much every new piece of guitar tech in to one guitar.

  • @LessthanJake14 Surely the brand's entire lineup does not consist of headless guitars?

  • @HayabusaNoTsuchi Yep, completely. Bass and electric.

There were two models in the 80's which DID have headstocks, but they weren't received very well.

Surely it makes sense, though. Having no head stops it from being top-heavy.

  • @LessthanJake14 Bleh. I can hold a guitar just fine with a headstock.

  • @HayabusaNoTsuchi Yeah, sure but you will ALWAYS have a counter-balance to the guitar's body weight. This means you have to keep it up or strap up REALLY tight. Whereas, with Steinberger, the fretboard stays in the same place the whole time.

    Also, it's incredibly portable.

  • @LessthanJake14 Wouldn't know personally, but that seems like a pretty insignificant amount of weight.

  • @HayabusaNoTsuchi Just makes it that little bit easier.

  • @LessthanJake14 I'm nowhere near ready for on-stage performance, so that doesn't matter to me. Either way, I can't get over the lack of a headstock; I've just always disliked the look.

  • @HayabusaNoTsuchi Fair enough, Steinbergers are a marmite (love it or hate it) situation. And it's also true that the headstock is sometimes the defining piece of a guitar.

  • @LessthanJake14 I appreciate the understanding :)

  • @HayabusaNoTsuchi No worries. =)

  • wow shitty ass cameramen they didnt show the second guitarist at all during his solo

  • The whole time they didn't show who is doing the growls

please someone tell me who is doing the growls?!!!!!!!!

  • @Hellhammer498 Ye? who did the growls??

  • @Hellhammer498 tony teergarden.

  • @Hellhammer498 Well this is when Cynic had first reunited, so they just had a recording of the growls being played in the background, but now Cynic found a member that can play guitar (fucking amazingly) and do the growls, his name is Tymon...I got all of their autographs back in August, they are all really cool people

  • so how does that guitar without the headstock work?

  • @xMallNinjax1 well

  • @xMallNinjax1 It is tuned at the bridge

  • 1:01 i never get over how much feelings thats put into that part, most beautifull thing i've ever heard!

  • i kinda dont want them to make another ablum because you are gonna here the same thing like the robot voice, the open chords and all of that stuff. im not saying that cynic is bad. i fucking love cynic. but they should stick with the 2 albums...or 4 albums

  • These guys are geniuses.

  • @007Pogo like cynic? Check out exivious. It has two cynic memebers in it. Their music is death jazz/fusion instrumental. Its amazing.

  • @Jakster840 Thanks dude.

  • @Jakster840 I don't want to sound like an asshole but what elements of jazz do they have?

  • @jpuma13 Yeah man, I don't see any overt elements of Jazz, though I'm not a rhythm player. I did however notice that they bass and guitars play in a more Jazz and Legit positioning of their instruments. Also the drummer is more thoughtful, usually drummer dominates and sometimes overpowers the rest of the voices of the band, but this guy plays with the band not over it. The solo and general feel of the piece has a lot of well placed space rather than a nonstop musical scream.

  • @Shadowconscious maybe because it's not auto tune (Vocoder)
