  • I was trying to get my guinea pig out of her cage, she was running around, and she started purring randomly O.O

  • Beautiful coat :)

  • I have the same guinea pig but her name is ruby. :D

  • Penny looks puzzled. LOL!

  • Awwe

  • Your guinea pig is so cute! Mine does that too when he's rubbed on that spot! I think it must be a ticklish area. lol!

  • OMG Mine does the same thing!

  • I can't get mine to not eat my shirt

  • oh my goodness some of the comments here are atrocious and no offense as others have said; ignorant. My lil chewie chubaca makes a similar noise but a bit higher pitched, then she'd stretch out, go on her side, and then sleep. =/ yes ppl sleep. So she clearly likes being petted that way. Though I also advice against stroking against the fur because they dont like it at all. I think her lil baby is purring as well. Angry purr is really different. You'll see them grind their teeth 2

  • yeah, i had guinea pigs and if there scared or startled they bolt.

  • awwwww how cute is that

  • For all the people who obviously never owned a happy guinea pig, this is a purr. I've had three and all of them made this sound when I fed them a treat.

  • Guys, it's a purr.

Guinea pigs chatter their teeth when they're angry, They make what's called a "Weeking" noise when they are "chatting", hungry, happy, or just talkative. And they make this purring noise when they like something. If they weren't happy with this, they wouldn't allow you to do it.

    Now, stop arguing.

  • omg...come on guys! are u really serious about thinking that this poor little piggy could like it? would you like being poked into your flanks? Penny is obviously scared and unhappy... I have piggies for years, and I can tell whether she´s happy or not...I understand that the owner doesn´t want to hurt her or do something bad to her, it´s just a begginers mistake, but I don´t understand, why she doesn´t want to hear advices at the same time...

  • @whitelily939 obviously, owning piggies for years hasn't taught you shit. if when they're happy you think they suffer...i just pray to god that when they suffer you don't think they're happy. i'm worried about your pigs.

  • Penny is sweetheart!

  • AWWW!! THTS SOOOOO CUTE!!

  • omg i just posted a vid of my pig doing the same thing and i thought she was the only 1 who did it

  • She's looking a bit thin you better fatten her up more.

  • I own guinea pigs, i don't do this to my female because she is pregnant and i wouldnt want to risk touching her sensitive spots, on the other hand my male loves it. He puts his rump down and stretches out and spreads his legs and its just so cute. 95% out of 100 guinea pigs squeal very loudly if hurt and its a distinct squeal not like any other, if you pat a guinea pig on the head and it constantly lifts it head up thats a sign of annoyance. When my boy is scared he bites.

  • people! The guinea pig is not being hurt! Mine makes the same sound when I do that. If he doesn't want me to do it, he'll nip at me.

  • This IS a good noise and its is NOT hurting him anymore than a good tissue massage would hurt you. My piggy loves his lower back rubbed hard and I give him a long slow massage and he pancakes on my laps and chills for a very long time. Sorry you got so many bad comments about this many people dont know what the F*** they are talking about...

  • LISTEN UP PEOPLE!!! She isnt hurting it. She is petting it. Guinea pigs like to be petted. And purring is fine! It probly means it likes being pet that way! So stop saying its mean because it isnt!

  • gotta love youtube. watch a video about a purring guinea pig and wind up telling off a sociopathic 16 year old who takes his homosexual frustrations out on animals. sorry that all had to go down on this video.

great vid, ty for the post, and putting up with the people there-after.

  • @uberd0rk1337 I'm a 39 year old bisexual Female, you stupid cocksucker.

  • @fucknametheives I like tree's

  • @fucknametheives and your point is?

  • @uberd0rk1337 NOTE THIS LOSER CLOSED ITS ACCOUNT

  • They make really entertaining sound when you squeeze their necks! I also love the loud shrieks they emit when you slap their fat little butts! They're hilarious when you toss them high in the air and they wave their legs frantically as they flip over and over. They are enertaining creatures, too bad they don't last longer than a few days.

  • @fucknametheives can we say SPHYCOPATH?? how bout I feed you to my snake and hear your sounds? then again, she'd prob choke.

  • @grettagrids

    :P :D

  • @fucknametheives cool a sociopath. how does it feel knowing you can't love or be loved. oh wait you have no feelings hahahaha. sucks to be you. spend your whole life not feeling anything hahahahaha. let's all laugh at the sociopath while he proclaims he tortures innocent animals. hahaha sociopath. tell you what. before you move on to killing people, check yourself into a psych ward and have them pump your brain full of lithium before you wind up locked up for life. idiot.

  • @uberd0rk1337 How about I make you my first "human" kill? Oh, wait, I don't think subhuman can count.

  • @uberd0rk1337 oH, i'M VERY CAPABLE OF FEELING. I know I'll feel great joy and intense pleasure as I pull your intestines out of your sliced open gut and wrap them around your neck.

  • @uberd0rk1337 GUESS YOU CLOSED YOUR ACCOUNT SO I COULDN'T TRACK YOU DOWN.

  • @fucknametheives look just because you got locked up in juvy and some dudes took turns "roughing up your backside" doesn't mean you should do it to innocent animals. do it to yourself if you float that way. you can't force an animal to be gay like you. and if it makes you so mad that your pets wont accept your sexuality...well maybe consider therapy or taking medication. we understand if your homosexuality makes it difficult to exist in society. but its not the pets fault.

  • My male guinea pig made that sound around my female piggy when he was "dating" her. But as a rule of thumb, guinea pigs do not like to have their back ends touched.

  • I had guinea pigs for years and this sound means "knock it off".

  • @Helmutlozzi the low purring is when they're angry. Mine patrol around their home making low purrs. When you get them out and stroke them, they make a higher pitched purr, which means they like the way you stroke them. It can be from just a little chin tickle to a nice brush with a guinea pig brush.

  • I really dont get it.. So the purring is both when happy and unhappy.. Troublesome animal :/

  • @Helmutlozzi Yeah, they are far more trouble than they're worth.

  • Our guinea pig does a reallly long purr everytime we rub her cheeks, or even accidentally touch her face. I kissed her cheek once, so she strecthed out her neck really long, rested her teeth on something and purred! She`ll even out her teeth on us when she is waiting for us to scratch her.

  • Raider and Gizmo do the same thing!

  • Um, this is why I want a guinea pig.

  • to my pig, it means its mad. i have 2 guinea pigs everyone thinks they are girls, but im not sure because they act like boys- but anyways one of them growls at the other and walks around all territorialy and kicks the other one of its hidey house thing so yeah im pretty sure it means its mad it also does that noise when i pet it the wrong way, like from back to front-it doesnt like the feeling so yeah i think your wrong but its just from my experience it could be different for you

  • @miranda111295 That purr from boys to another guinea-pig is like a randy purr, my males do it to other males when they have smelt girls or something like that, and they make the same noise if i stroke him back to front too, probably cause it fells tickley and nice aha.. :S Nice video btw! One of my guineas looks like that and does the same thing on command hehe :) x

  • my pig does the same thing, its sooo cute :)

  • I do that with mine too! Kinda scratch her on the sides and she purrs. And guess what? Her name is Penelope, penny for short :)

  • omg that looks just like my guinea pig. his name is squeaker :D

  • piggies don't like being prodded..get some knowledge

  • @TigerIPanzer My two pigs LOVE being scratched and tickled and rubbed. Get some reality.

  • @TigerIPanzer my pigs of guinea love it when i pet her head and head and back.

  • @TigerIPanzer I don't know where you got that from, but my guinea pig loves being rubbed that way too. If he doesn't like something he'll squeal really loudly. Use some common sense, not all guinea pigs are the same.

  • @emilylengriffin I got that from 35 years of having pet guinea pigs - waaaaaaaay before you were even born!...respect superior experience.

  • @TigerIPanzer Just because the teacher has had a teaching job for 35 years, she only has one year experience.

  • @TigerIPanzer I may have more experience than you think. Don't judge before you know all the facts.

  • @emilylengriffin well I could say the same to you sweetie!...I suggest you take your own advice and listen to people who know what they're talking about.

  • wow you guys take it over board sometimes its just an animal how do you know how it feels i have one myself and sometimes its a good purr or not a good purr

  • That first sound IS NOT a purr. Thats a warning sound. The clicking sounds that comes directly after are their version of a "happy purr". Please learn the difference.

  • @moOswe this is not a warning sound. my guinea pig does this as well when he's happy. If he's pissed he makes a completely different sound.

  • @emilylengriffin Then you cant tell when hes angry or not.

  • @moOswe I have had guinea pigs all my life. I've had enough of them to know if this one was angry or scared and he clearly isn't. Despite the fact that all guinea pigs have completely different personalities, I've never heard one "purr" like that when they are pissed. It has always been a contented sound.

  • @emilylengriffin By saying that you prove that you dont know the basics about their behaviour thus making it hard for you to analyze.

  • @moOswe If you actually read the comments and saw what I had said previously, I know several veterinarians personally that I am very close friends with and several of my family members and friends who have grown up with guinea pigs that I have learned from when it comes to the care and behavioral patterns of these animals. I am pretty sure I know my 2 cents worth with the expertise that I've been around all my life.

  • @emilylengriffin And still you know nothing worth knowing. Amazing...

  • @moOswe Oh, so are you a veterinarian? Note the sarcasm.

  • wow after reading so many posts....ppl are so ignorant....u wanna see a guinea pig suffering or getting hurt?....they SCREAM, FIGHT, BYTE and when they are terryfied or scared they just stay still....whenever u see a guinea pig moving...making noise....jumping...its a NORMAL behavior...so its OK! AND if the pig is confortable they will move walk around you smell your fingers, etc...

I DONT CARE WHAT OTHER PPL SAY! ITS SO ANNOYING! ....JUST BE HAPPY WITH YOUR PIG and he'll be happy with you

  • People stop saying she is being cruel to this guinea pig!!! Yew wernt there!!! Yew have no idea how that Guinea is really feeling so stop TRYING to sound smart, mii Guinea Pigs always does that (in a good way) so unless yew are that Guinea Pig leave the owner alone and quit trying to pretend like yew noe how that Guinea Pig feels :)

  • well my piggie does not make sounds its hard to know if it likes or hate it

only thing he did was squeek when i was brushing it but it was only 1 time but for the rest its really quiet :S

  • haha, it looks like my guinea pig :D

  • its telling u to stop it

  • I love her, she is so adorable and sweet.

  • well i think its purring because if it didn't want to be touched there then wouldn't it just run or nip u.

  • I LOVE when guinea pigs purr, they sound so cute! When I held Sox, my late guinea pig, he'd purr contentedly as I'd talk to and stroke him.

  • That's rumbling not purring.

  • I do agree with those people who are saying that this isn't a "purr"ing noise. It's a noise they make when they hear something they don't like, or if you're touching them in an area of their body they are not comfortable with.

Guinea pigs generally don't like being touched around their backside areas. One of my piggies doesn't, but the other one stretches her legs out so I can massage them. lol.

It all depends on the individual guinea pig. ;-)

  • my guinea pig has 2 different sounds that sound VERY similar. they are growl/purr sounds. one he does when hes rly happy and one he duz when hes rly mad...hard 2 tell them apart.

  • This is NOT purring. Its telling you "Please, dont touch me there." Purring is short bursts of chattering noises, not this. This is a warning sign. You should not stroke the animal's back or rump, only around the ears and cheeks. It is a common, honest mistake, but you should back off when it does this.

  • @darthtater7777 Now the fuck off, You got every fucking thing mixed up......It's not even fucking called purring, it's called cooing.

When they chatter there teeth the means back off, like there scared.

Your a common, honest mistake, and you should back off when your wrong.

  • Mine does that, too. He can sometimes do it when I say hi.

  • im new to it all i hear are squeaks and purrs i have no idea how to tell the sounds apart lol. i got em for my son ima snake guy nice quiet animal lol

  • lol mine does the same thing

  • I put my guinea pig on my lap and he crawls on my neck all the time its sooooooooooo cute abd most of the times he gives me licks on the hand and its sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute i loveeeeeeeeeeeee him soooooooooooooooo much

    <<<<<<<<<<<333333333

  • Lol I was watching this with my guinea pig and she would purr when yours did XP

  • generally my pigs made this noise when they were curious about a noise, when something tickled them and they liked it or when they were playing with each other. my boy pigs used to even do it when they were rubbing their bums on the scratcher - it's totally a happy noise.

  • ah,I know that ^^

  • Look at it logically, this pig's body language doesn't look at all stressed or like what the owner is doing is bad, and my pigs are pretty clear about what they enjoy and don't. They're perfectly capable of moving away if they don't like something, but this one was just sitting there, enjoying it. Even a guinea pig doesn't let you touch it in a way it dislikes.

  • OMG looks a lot like my JImmy!!

  • Such a cutie! :D

  • Okay, the noise is when they don't like something, like loud noises. My guinea pig does that when there is a scratching noise. As, you say, the guinea pig was turning her head, that's because she doesn't know what's going on or which side she should defend.

  • Comment removed

  • No, you're wrong.

the noise this pig is making means she is angry and distressed. If I do this to my pigs they make the same noise with a whine afterwards. if they are happy it is a quieter, softer noise. This one is quite agressive.

  • Comment removed

  • That's because they are trying to get you away. Wow, it's not that hard to use your brain. I have had guinea pigs for over 7 years. I know, and they usually can't escape because your holding them and won't let them. I'm not playing dumb, I'm telling the truth! :I

  • Well, clearly you're wrong.

  • Comment removed

  • there are two different purrs that guinea pigs make - one is lower and longer, this means the guinea pig enjoys whatever is happening to it. A fast hard purr means that they are startled. the only thing ive read about that signifies anger or distress, is teeth chattering.

  • your pig is so cute!

  • when my guinea pig makes this sound it means he's upset. his purr sounds different. he usually makes it when he's settling down to rest or after eating. i read that they dont like to bein petted on their lower backs cuz thats a sensitive area. i think its true

  • It wouldn't let me post everything XD; continuing on... She's never bitten me after making the noise and when I have stopped she will turn and lick my hand until I pet her again. So maybe some guinea's don't like it, but obviously some do. That's my two cents on it.

  • I think it may vary from guinea pig to guinea pig as to what it means. My vet said it's a good thing and she is well respected and degreed in the field of exotics. When my Takara makes this noise she is usually in my lap OR her exercise pen, so if she didn't like it she could move away but instead she stretches her little body out and settles down leaning into my hand.

  • It's a common mistake to assume this vocalization = contentment (perhaps because it sounds similar to a cat purring???). However, every book I've read on guinea pigs is very clear that when cavies make this sound it means they are upset.

  • my guinea pig sounds in the middle of the vid and she purrs rly loud when she gets back to her cage :O

  • the reason your pig is doing this is because he doesnt like it

  • no you dumb!

    purring= likey

    squeeling= no

  • Watch you don't get peed on.

  • The little piggies like "OH YES THAT TURNS ME ON!!!!"

  • Yes, absolute rubbish. I kept them for years and years. I would not have a clue.

When you groom them they will make that sound too.

They will probably squeak when you groom them if you use a wire brush.

  • Tancid :

You are most definitely wrong. That sound is one of contentment.

  • absolute rubbish. that is the sound of fear/ discontentment. contentment is a squeek sound

  • The video lasts 30 seconds and we neither did this before nor again after this video, which was shot almost about a year ago.

Worry yourself not, a video is a moment in time. The events contained therein are not necessarily continuing in real time.

We are not tormenting our guinea pig, and we do not have to justify to anyone how much we love and care for our animals.

  • @AnimalLoversWeb guinea pigs purring means they're happy so i suggest the 1st commenter does their research! what a cute little guinea pig this is :D I used to have one called Poppy, and she as the cutest thing :)

  • No, i asked a vet what it means. It means that she is Enjoing herself and is loves her owners. My baby boy guinea pig did it so i got scared and checked what it means.

  • I would suggest you find a new vet; yours apparently still has some learning to do.

  • Um no, you apperantly have some learning to do. why dont you research it?

  • @Tancid she obviously loves her guinea pig if she makes a video for her. its NOT torture, torment, cruelty, or any other crap you can say about it. every guinea pig means something different when it purrs. for some it means go away for some it means i love you. my guinea pig randomly walks around and purrs all by itself. are you saying im somehow bothering it when im all the way across the room? no. im not.

  • I've had four guinea pigs over tha past 20 years, and I know cavys. That's not a sound of contentment. That's the sound they make when they're not happy with the way you're touching them.

  • My guinea pig does the same thing and she's the same coloring!! Cool! Does that mean they like it? The rubbing?

  • Yes it does, i researched it.

  • New piggy owner here... just brought home a 6 week old baby last night for my granddaughter. As a dog owner, I'm trying to figure out if this darling creature is happy or scared to death.

I found this video so I could play some piggy sounds for my little girl.

The sounds sure got her worked up... so I honestly can't tell if she's excited to hear another piggy or if she thinks there is a piggy in trouble!

Beautiful little creature... but sure is difficult to figure out!

  • Congrats on the new guinea pig, I'm sure you will love having it. They are very timid so a lot of gradual taming and handling is best.

They make an enormous range of sounds and yes it is difficult to tell what a lot of them mean.

  • @skibumette when my guinea used to squeak when i walked by it was because she was impatient for me to give her food, so they squeak when they want food, its quite high pitched so it can sound a little intense but they arnt scared or anything. also my friend babysat my guinea once and put it on a leash (that i never used) and took it outside) it freaked out and made the LOUDEST panicky sounds. youll be able to tell the difference

  • @skibumette Feed the guinea pig to the dog and enjoy the sounds it makes. They sound like car alarms. They deserve to die for that annoying sound alone.

  • My pigs do the same thing if you pet them on the lower half of their bodies. It's NOT purring; it's a sign of displeasure or nervousness. When another pig is trying to mount them and they don't like it, they make that noise and run away or spray urine at them. The only reason this one's not running or biting is because it's being held, and guinea pigs are pretty docile when held. But trust me, this pig is trying to tell you, "knock it off!"

  • my piggy makes that noise when you tickle her too.

and for all of those people that say that she doesn't like it then why isn't she running away or biting? she looks pretty happy to me.

  • They say that because people are stupid and jump to conclusions. My new baby boy piggy does that when i pick im up. It means they love that your paying them some attention. so no worries!! tell a vet.. they laugh in ur face!

  • Yeah my pig makes the same noise when i give her food!

  • lol it just means shes happy!

  • I'm not too sure why, but I found this video awesome!

  • The purring isn't aggression, it's more of a calming noise they make. It could mean they are scared or uncomfortable and make the purr sound to calm themselves down.

  • haha penny try to tell you that she doesnt like you touch her butt :P cute penny

  • mine would bite if I tried to touch those parts

  • That is not a happy piggy sound :(

  • Very cute. My own guinea pig responded with a purr of her own after the last one. :)

  • lol my guinea pigs started chattin and looked around for the guinea pig making the sound :)

  • Pig doesnt like anyone touch their butt....

  • This is the sound of aggression. A happy purr is more of a gentle sound from within. you are rubbing the guinea pigs fur the wrong way and causing it pain. They only like to be stroked the way that their fur lies and a lot of them dont like to be stroked near their bottoms. My guneaa pig only makes this noise when he is being aggressive towards my other male who he does not like, unless he is at the other side of the cage divider.

  • hallielou and morgan231 are right and this is a very important fact WHEN YOU PET THEM FROM BACK TO FRONT IT HURTS THEM if your petting your pig and it makes that noise then that means YOU ARE CAUSING IT PAIN if your not petting it and it makes that noise then it doesn't like something around its play area

  • I want a Piggy like Penny! :D

Do Guinea Pig make good pets?

  • @Il0v3MiiSiS No they're lousy pets. All they do is scream and shit and run away. To get them to stay still you have them smack them until they go into a semi-trance and are too shit-baked afraid to move. Then they usually die since they are only useless feeders anyway. I'm currently dehydrating five guinea pig heads to wear as a necklace. That's about the best use I've ever had for them.

  • @fucknametheives lol Wow, I think you need to go outside more often instead of trying to wind people up about their pets. Tsk tsk.

Oh wait, you probably don't have any friends to go outside with, silly me. Nevermind, at least trolling guinea pig videos makes you feel like a big boy.

  • @Kelenti I have more friends than you could count. Oh, wait, you can't count to eleven with your pants on, can you? Go masturbate with one of those disgusting rodents you think are so great. And when I upload a gp video there'll be no doubt that the fucking thing will be screaming in agony as I rip its fur out and then strangle it.

  • @fucknametheives lol Imaginary friends don't count.

And yea, youtube wouldn't take that video down at all. Not that you'd ever do that anyway since you're only trash talking on youtube vids cause in real life, you're just someone's little bitch who isn't worth shit.

Funny thing is..I'm laughing at you but also thinking you must really want some attention.

Bad troll is bad, and desperate.

  • @fucknametheives Then don't have pets. It's as simple as that.

  • mine purs when i rub it under its mouth

  • I have a piggy and it makes that noise right before she tries to bite me but thats only if you rub her lower back...haha

  • Your piggy is adorable :D

  • And yes you were gentle with it, but gentle doesn't mean pleasant. It's like someone messing up your hair, it doesn't hurt, but you still want them to stop.

  • I don't even understand why people think purring means happy or comfy. Their not cats. And they're annoyed. The fact that a lot of cmoment say that it means happy doesn't prove anything. Obviously, no one wants to believe that their guinea pig is annoyed. It's not about opinion, it's about people wanting their guinea pig to love everything they do for them. B

  • That noise means "I don't like this, I'm scared". One of mine does it everytime the cell phone rings. Absolutely hates it. So everyone here who does something to make their guinea pig make that noise (like "shake him") is doing something your guinea pig hates. Something to think about.

  • A gentle tickle to the side hardly constitutes "shaking" the guinea pig.

You'll find that amongst guinea pig keepers who have commented here more seem to think it means happy rather than scared.

In either case it is certainly within the realms of gentle handling and I don't think falls under the category of shaking, rough handling or abuse.

  • @hallielou Actually alot of guniea pigs like being pet like this. Mine will lay down and stretch out while purring if I pet them like this. I mean she does seem a little rough in the video but doing this motion gently can actually relax them alot.

  • that sound means they love u cause u treat it wright good job taking care of your guinea pig

  • Is that a good noise? I have one and he makes that noise everytime i try to pick him up and he also runs away why does he do that?( and now hes not abused to some people)

  • I think so , but read down the comments, there are plenty of other opinions.

  • aw! i just got to baby guinea pigs how do introduce my self to them or get to the point were i can hold them with out them being scared?

  • D0 THEY BiTE?? iM THiNKiN 0F GETTiNG 0NE BUT iM SCARED i MiGHT PiCK A MEAN 0NE 0R S0METHiNG L0L

  • Guinea pigs are fairly gentle creature and make great pets, they can take a long time to tame but they very rarely bite.

  • THANKS =)

  • Cute ;) My guinea pig purrs on command too, even if you just touch him he purrs XD

  • the reason guineapigs purrr is because they hear loud noises it means there scared

  • actually no, if they purr it means they like something. If they purr and freeze up it means they are scared. Obviously this guinea pig is happy right now.

  • As you can hear on the video there is no loud noises going on, so I can't agree with you there. Check back the comments it seems people are divided about 50:50 on whether she is happy or not.

I'm convinced that she is happy.

  • wow, lots of opinins of purring... i didnt even know they purr..... but i think they purr cuz their happy cuz obviously she takes good care of them and why would they be unhappy???

  • Guinea Pigs ROCK!

  • guinea pigs do that when your touch there back end, it means they dont like that. So dont do that

  • Your welcome to your opinion but if you read the rest of the comments you will see that not everyone agrees with you.

  • Guinea pigs do that when they want to show they like that. They like to purr. not just when you touch their back end. i have had guinea pigs for years, and mine are always purring when they are happy and playing.

  • I'm with the others. The purring is a sign of enjoyment. If they don't like something they simply move out of the way or just rapidly for harsher pain or discomfort.

  • ahh he's bubbling up That what I call it...

  • Hmm So many different opinions on if the Piggie is Happy..or not.

I used to stroke my piggie fur the wrong way

And it would mke that sound...never knew what it means though.

  • OMG. I had guinea pigs when I was a kid, and it's been a few years since I had one. I forgot they purred! oh the memories
