It has served to convince people to not save for retirement because Social Security will take care of them when in reality they will never see their money again. It has caused far more harm than good and people are poorer as a result. Had they been able to keep their money the economy would have been more stimulated and they would have better retirements as a result.

We were told by the government we would receive a retirement from them and then proceeded to give 12% of our wages to the government for retirement. Many decided not to have a private retirement because the government was going to take care of it. Fast forward to today and social security is broke, the money the people put into it is gone and now no one has a retirement. It's all very sad indeed.

@trustboy77 There is still money left in the trust so first we need to give the promised funds to the people who don't have a retirement otherwise. Hate to say it, but it is going to have to be income based since we can't afford to pay everyone out. Next we need to partially privatize the money being paid into social security. Simply letting people have access to it and choosing where it is invested is sufficient to me. We do need to maintain benefits for mentally handicapped etc.
