People should have faith like this in God. A lot of people are like amphibians, all nice on Sundays, but notorious crooks the rest of the week. The USA is drowning in scams that have robbed people of pensions and life savings & the economy is failing. I believe in leaving wild snakes alone. It is that serpent spirit that the saints shall overcome and emerge victoriously in Christ's Name. I wish I lived in a strong Christian community that have faith like these people.
I belong to a Catholic Charasmatic Church...yes it's a Catholic thing too....depends on how close you want to walk with God....and I can tell you first hand.. The Baptism of The Holy Spirit is real. We speak in tongues, heal, get slain in the spirit..prophesize..everything except handle snakes. And afterwards you are so happy because you are in love...with Jesus. It's like the lady said everyone looks good.
Sweet, precious children of Jesus. My brothers and sisters in Christ. Speaking simple truth, no ceremonies , no rituals; just pure joy and praise in song and worship. Courteous, calm and kind.
To "crjetpilot"'s comments: No, no need to worry about these people "seizing" political power. They are not entangled in politics. They are merely humble servants of the Lord. And I've never seen the power of God disturb a small child or even wake a baby. There is true peace in these gatherings.
@1skinnyguy I agree. It amazes me that so many " Christians focus on the snake handling part, but totally miss the main aspect of humble , clean , sanctified Christian living. I was raised this exact way, accept we didnt handle serpents .These churches claim to have a pentecostal fervor, but are Holiness in belief- which makes them different from mainstream charismatic Pentecostalism.
Funny how Christians marginalize and judge these humble people. I am an Atheist but if I was religious then I would probably find a church like this.
Snakes, poison, tongues - its no crazier than believing god impregnated a 13 year old virgin and that after a man died he came back to life three days later.
One dude is playing a sweet Gibson acoustic, looks like a J-250, and the other dude is playing a Fender Strat, and since this movie is from 1967, I bet that thing was juicy! Sorry - I'm just loving those guitars!
I have been obsessed with this church since moving here. This is the street where I now live. The House of Prayer was abandoned and burned down last year. Luckily the church had relocated to a new building a few hundred yards nearer to the town. They may no longer handle snakes but they certainly create a loud rockin' sound for their Lord.
@thevirgo9 They still do handle snakes and hold services once a week but its not on Sunday. There is another Holiness church in Gauley Bridge that is very similar , but they are not snake handlers. You can hear the loud music coming out of the church but it isnt the same church was was pastored under bro, Preast.
You must be sent by the divine, would you like to come in my cave with me and sacrifice some children over animal skins? I make my own clubs out of dinosaur bones.
"Dinosaur bones"? That sounds suspiciously like that evolutionist heresy! You ain't one o' them "intellectuamal elites" I been hearin' so much about, are you? XD
No, my friend. I'm not one of those blasphemous evolutionists. The only book I've ever read is the Bible, and the only lectures I've attended are the sermons at my church. I believe that dinosaurs walked the Earth with man and am confident that they were aboard Noah's Arc. And yes, I really do live in a cave.
...if I bring my own dinosaur bones and some hors d'oeuvres may I please visit your cave for some good ol' fashioned baby-sacrificin' and Bible-studyin'?
"...Every individual soul is a creation of god. Makes no difference where they're from, who they are, or WHAT COLOR THEY ARE. They're god's creation because by one blood he made all nations. By one blood he does. It makes no difference where the man is, or what part of the country of the world it is, it is god's creation and god's nation. Thank the lord. He fills the whole universe and it's the same god in Africa today, it's the same god as right here on Scrabble Creek in W. VA....
There's no difference in people, it's just how people act, that's the only thing that makes a difference. It's just how they act, how they live, that makes a difference. Because they're all people...just everybody's just people..so, we hope god will bless you tonight."
I dunno...doesn't sound very ignorant to me. Rather progressive and tolerant really.
I Happen To Live In Southern WV. Mercer County To Be Specific. I Attend The Church of God. I'm Not Familiar With Snake Handling or Poison Drinking and I Don't Doubt They're Bad People. But I Know For Sure Speaking In Tongues Is Something Indeed From God. =]
I'm from southern WV and I'm familiar with these kinds of churches. You should be slow about criticizing them and saying it's not scriptural. These are good people and what they are experiencing is real to them. There is scripture to back this stuff up and what is order and disorder is relative to whom you ask/open for personal interpretation. There is order. It's just different than what you are accustomed to.I know it's different but still try to be understanding. Best Wishes -Amy
I believe these are good people, no argument there. I do think exposing children to this foolishness is dangerous to their physical and mental well being. If people all of a sudden started believing in human sacrifice (claiming that Abraham was going to offer his son as a sacrifice, until God stopped him), should that be allowed too? It's a slippery slope. God forbid if groups like these ever seize the political power that Baptists or Evangelicals have in rural America!
I can see where you are coming from crjetpilot. I also understand that when you say that exposing children to such beliefs is dangerous to their physical and mental well being is just a statement of your personal opinion, which is fine. I would say that churches like these offer children good things as well, such as hope, social networks, and ethics. (Let me make it clear that I'm no longer a part of such services, just grew up in them.) Would definitely agree do not want to run the country.
hmmm... Sarah Palin is/was a Pentecostal. But I don't think groups like these are really concern about ruling America. There really isn't a strong push for politics in these groups. Really isn't much to worry about these folks. They just love to worship and have church.
@aimeeirene agreed. Other than the snake handling and all that--that's just another Sunday in any black church, like mine--presence of the holy ghost is a reason to celebrate every Sunday!
@aimeeirene .........People can do anything and attach a scripture to it in an attempt to justify what they're doing. This is what happens when uneducated people of blind faith interpret scriptures. Picking up poisonous snakes is religious stupidity, it is not true spiritual practice.
very sad. I am a Christian and believe Jesus Christ to be my only Lord and Savior,Amen. but this whole speaking with the tongues ordeal you see today in pentecostal charismatic churches is just ridiculous.
Be careful what you say. Despite any weird churches, the infilling of the Holy Spirit is real and happened all through the book of Acts and has not been done away with.
i understand that but the fashion in which these people "claim" to have the spirit is false. the Bible also states that everything is done in His name and in order, something a lot of these so called "christians" lack. God bless.
poor children, these people are blinded. The scripture doesn't mean to go try it. I am a Holiness preacher, but we do not believe in snake handling, its not Biblical, its dangerous.
I do believe this woman somehow had the good Holy Ghost. hallo-ma-shulda-muh-didi-eye-sayah. I have heard this very quip in many pentecostal churches. wonder what it really means?
lol, does it ever. Actually, I am born again. Thank you for your left field quip. Now, if you will apply understanding since the Holy Ghost would not give such a message without an interpretation to follow. Is that what God truly put in your heart to tell me? If such Christians gave themselves full authority to backmask and burn records in the past (kinda like Nazis), etc. then the general public is equally entitled to examine the reverse content of their Snake worshipping services. Virago, your comment is brilliant!
Lol,folks like the ones on this film comprise over half of my family. I could never say that anyone of the sort has a bad heart. In fact, often the simplest people are the kindness and most loving. Nor do I negate their spiritual walk but it is a phenomena worth examining. I was very familliar with and, otherwise, touched by what part of this ladies testimony I could understand. I can assume the other part that was in "tongues" was a learned addition the likes of "oh, boy!" or "let me tell ya".
The ones I knew were the least judgemental folks I ever knew.
Their feeling was that an individual's relationship with God was between that individual and God and that God was the judge of that relationship and not them.
I didn't like the church services though.
Once they got caught up in the "Spirit" it got downright spooky.
It could take on a rather evil character to be honest.
I happened into a prayer meeting at a church beside my house as a child and they were groaning and moaning with the lights out. I thought it was creepy and sounded sinister or , at least, sexual. The deacons wife could see nothing but demons and she was all pilled out most of the time. The pastor and his family were all morbidly obese. These are not good examples for children or weak minded adults and is nothing like the Church that Jesus established. It is a rogue minded and unreasoning beast.
I was raised similary and that crowd would have handled snakes if any of them were fast enough to catch one. I definately remember the great Olivia Newton John/ Smurf record fry of '82. My area has never been as clannish as these hill folk's, though. And there is only a slightly higher literacy rate. The sad thing is that while people were busy omitting the small things, like TVs, and women wearing pants and make up, they remained ignorant to the pagan idolatry of their snake handling practices.
As some have pointed out there is an admonition in the Bible against tempting God.
I am an atheist and except for a very short period during my late thirties have been since I was nine so their services looked different to me than they would to a believer.
But I have grown less and less tolerant of religion over the years.
Fundamentalists in the U.S. are threat to progress and it's shameful that they corrupt the minds of children demanding that they reject science.
I agree, for the most part. If God is all powerful He needs no help from fundamentalists. I can see why you would choose Atheism when shown this spectacle in real life. I can say "God Bless you" because I know He has already. You have common sense and that is something many lack in this age of blind faith and televangelism. I believe Jesus' death and resurrection has overcome every aspect of this world. Including the lives of those who follow Him. Science to me is proof of God's ingenuity.
I love the Pentecotal/Charasmatic worship very much. I don't believe in handling snakes though. We got a lot of people who don't pray for wisdom and understanding of the word of God. God will give it if we ask.
I am sure these were some fine people. They mean well and believe in Christ.God loves them very much. They are mislead however when it comes to handling the snakes. The Bible says not to tempt the Lord Thy God and that is what they are doing. This is why they get snakes bites and many of them die from the bites.
Alternate explanation: they get bit by snakes and sometimes die because they are HANDLING POISONOUS SNAKES.
I don't believe in God and I've never been killed by a snake either. See, what I do is - this may sound weird - when I see a poisonous snake, I *leave it the hell alone*.
(Non-poisonous snakes, on the other hand, I like to give little skritches between the eyes. They seem to enjoy it.)
what's odd is the evidence of such cults in ancient times. i.e. the prechristian statue of a lady in a long skirt, bun hairdo, with a perplexed look on her face holding snakes above her head with both hands. Google "snake cults". The resemblece is uncanny. Also, notice that glossolallia (speaking in tongues) is most prevalent in areas that have mines or oil wells. Poisoness gasses seep up from the earth in these areas and affect people in about the same way (disorientation) i.e. Oracle of Delphi
My church was exactly like this. Its sad how churches are now...people rarely even testify about how God changed them. Anymore people are more worried about sowing seed and seeing how much money and prosperity they can get. These people were willing to serve God no matter what.

shawndalakiddio 3 years ago
Actually I grew up around folks like that and have been in churches where such things happen.
(No snake handling though).
They were and are some of the, kindest, most gentle and wonderful people I have ever known.
They pretty much leave the world to itself and wouldn't be the kind to burn records or books.
In general one has to look to the citified types for that sort of thing.
One group did invade a bookstore here once and forcebly take books they didn't like without paying.
virago1776 3 years ago
The bookstore decided not to press charges which was sort of irritating.
But the Southern Baptists are the worst imo.
If they were allowed to they would be burning witches and stoning us all to death for misbehaving.
I suspect it irritates them to no end that the law won't allow it.
Thanks for the compliment.
