Mr. Balkam's seemed a bit taken aback by the journalist's information on dropping reading levels. When children are switching from books to SMS messages, they are still reading... but without much deep-thinking., I guess.
I live in Europe, where texting is rampant, but was shocked when I was in the USA (where I saw Mr. Balkam present at JOSTI), and a friend of mine was driving and checking their Facebook messages! I was shocked (and scared).
