u must have been at a lodge looks like around the east arm maybe it dont look like the mackenzie river i live in the northwest territories i land 30 plus pike before i seen one a friend caught it was 44 lbs good job in the great slave lake back in the 40s they pulled out pike that were 6 feet long
Also, I love the 3" banjo minnow. I bet I've caught a hundred bass on it in the last two years. (i don't bass fish that much either) I just ordered the large banjo minnows for muskie down here. Figured its worth a shot.
Wow, that lake is waaay up there! Do people actually fish that far north?:) How long does it take to get up there? I've read that fish that far north take a really long time to grow that large due to the long winters. Do you think those fish could be 20 yr old? Our muskie down here in Ohio can grow to the mid 40's in five years or so.
hey babe winkle man hows it going im trying to find the video about you interviewing wayne hockmeyer i found it one time but couldn't the next time anyway i caught my second fish lol i was using the blue back clear 3 inch banjo minnow i hope i catch some more at the lake im going to have you heard of claytor lake in Virginia
@FoAxAssassin If you are using a banjo for pike, I would suggest a wire jerkbait leader. There are several brands out there. You can also use any superlines as well. If I am using a superline for bass I use a 10 pound test fluorocarbon line leader.
Most of the time I prefer mono over no stretch. It is just my personal choice. However, if the area is full of weeds, wood or rock, I will change over in a heartbeat to a superline. Hope this helps you out. Good Fishing!
hey thanks ok i was also wondering how do i make the banjo minnow more produceive and how do i keep it from the fall to fast should i find lighter hooks to make them fall more slowly and how to make them float alittle more
hey i like your video ive caught one bass off the 3 inch banjo minnow it was the green back white color wish i can fish more to catch some more bass i like the fall method and the jerk method im going to try to practice the swimming part i probly start off slow to get the rythem right what i wanna know is how to set the hook when the fish gets it thanks
@bluejay148 There are 2 ways I set the hook with a banjo minnow, either let them eat it for a bit and hit them as hard as you can or set the hook to the side rather than up.
@Dave49566 The big thing is you can not fish the bait too slow. However in some conditions, you can work the bait too fast. If you jerk the rod too hard, the bait will not "die" properly. If you jerk too hard, it will not do that. It takes some practice but watch the video again and picture yourself on the rod. 2 to 3 inch jerks with f the rod should get the bait swimming. Then go from there, it may take more or less jerking depending on line type and weight and/or rod type and weight.
@afshaffe We use the 7 and 9 inch minnows using the banjo screws or using the new eyes on the 006 minnow. The screw and the eyes both attach to the hooks that Banjo Minnow ships with the lures.
Hey what size banjo minnows is he using and how is it rigged up. I know he has a steel leader on it but what about the hook system because I just bought a few banjo minnows and was gonna try it out.

Mr. Winkelman, might I say, you are the MAN. My father and I had the pleasure of meeting you at a fishing show some years back, you were both professional and personable at the same time.
I still have your autograph in my tackle box.
I just ordered the banjo and can't wait to get it into the water.
@sinoflord We have specialized cameras that we can mount on a pole that extends out about 10 feet. The camera then plugs into a record source (in this case a mini dv camera) and the videographer can then view the screen and see what he is filming.
@muskie1976 Well sir, even you can see that these pike are visible to the naked eye, and if you are such an avid muskie fisherman, please, go get your scuba certificate and try to find the fish underwater with scuba gear and then try to get them to bite.
BEAUTIFUL Fish.... Favourite Fish is Pike so this is extremely awesome. Babes right about one thing, some people fish DECADES and never see fish like that or even get them on.... Way to Go Babe, Another Beauty added to your catches!!
Considering that these are NORTHERN PIKE and not muskies, I will take your lack of knowledge as your idiocracy. Before you comment, maybe do your research, lmao!
Use quick set rigs with your minnow. You can set the hook quicker and do not injure the fish you wish to release. Sure, with any hook, you do have a chance to deeply hook the fish.
Try to get out of the current areas. Look for small eddy currents, backwater areas, rocks, trees... anything that breaks the current. Use a bobber and a quick set rig with as little weight as possible. Change your depth to fit the general area you are fishing.
Man, I love you master winkleman. I bought the 110 piece set just 'cause you endorsed it. Better not steer me wrong! I got night time fishing for big walleye, so I'm hoping the firefly minnows will give me what I need. What would you reccomend for medium-shallow fishing? heavy or light eyes? I've never been good with jigging, I'm more of a crankbait guy, so this is all new territory for me.
To catch pike like this consistanty, you have to find a lake in northern Canada or Alaska. Sure they do exist in the lower 48, but they are a rarity. And to kobe, I just fished the Mississippi near my home and every fish from 6 inches to 21 inches was caught on a 4 inch white 006. Never missed a fish so I am thinking the 4 wasnt too big at all.
for small mouth bass use the 3 incher for sure the 4 incher might get a little to big so just go with the 3 incher that is what i caught all mine off of! 3INCHERR!
i bought the banjo minnows and i haven't had any luck with them yet i like to fish mostly bass but have not gotten a single hit with the minnows but they will hit the other lures i usually use i must be doing somthing wrong
I have had the banjo minnow and I had the same 38" pickerel hit it 3 times. the first to times he just tore the minnow off and the last time I rigged a trailer hook. and landed my biggest pickerel ever.
keep em comin lad!!! if u want big pike come to ireland!! thats a small pike compared to wat we have in the oaks fishery in northern ireland!! it aint bigger than big buddy ....its way smaller!!! cool vid thou...
It has nothing to with the hook, its just the great f'n fishing in the NWT... I swear that there are some lakes you can pull that out almost every cast
Lac La Martre is a great fishing lake. I was there in the summer of 1999 and will never forget it. Caught a 22 pound Northern in what I think is the same bay as shown here.
Way back when I first saw these on the market, being advertised on TV (I was a teenager then, Im 25 now), I thought they were just a novelty for rednecks to blow their money on. I was DEAD wrong lol. Every time my dad and I went out to the lake or whatever, we always came home with supper ;) Just practice twitching the bait, and you're set man. Whoever came up with these really did their homework on game fish, because holy shit do they work.
good fishing!
