It actually appears a number of times throughout the movie. The original movie did not have the song with the singing at the beginning of the american version. This was the main theme/melody for the movie.

You can watch the whole german version of the movie here on Youtube. The movie is about 10 minutes longer in this version. The musical score is in large parts totally different than in the american version.(Don't forget that it is actually the original version) Also the intro and ending sequence is a little bit different.

@mirushka23 :) People forget how awesome of a visual spectacle this was back in the 80s. It was truly magical on screen. I know that it influenced my imagination throughout my entire life and I'm sure it did the same for many many other people as well. On top of the film's visuals the music has completely influenced me as a musician throughout my life. I still have the cassette tape that my Mom bought for me in 1984. It is warped and distorted from so much play time! :)

Yeah Das boot was a German movie, I remember renting it but dont really remember the music. The director Wolfgang Petersen is really good I wish he directed the other Never ending stories.
