@19thSFGA That 74 year old pilot was one of the best airrace and warbird pilots in the world, after all he could land he most dificult to land mustang in the world with stall speeds equivilant to modern jet fighters- the Ghost! equipment failure is to blame here, in my opinion it was elivator controle cable, trim tab fell off becouse of stress from loos elivator. RIP loyal fans and race legend jimmy leward.........
@19thSFGA Try to find a young pilot as skilled at flying these planes at low levels AND very VERY high speeds as these old timers are. There's NO substitute for experience, especially in GA. This is also the reason RBAR has never had a champion under 42 years old.
The coldness of some comments I've seen on these threads are appalling. Jimmy Leeward, and many others, race these planes because this is their passion. Along with many spectators which share that passion. Just as some folk's passion is football, or baseball, or NASCAR, whatever. Is it potentially dangerous, HELL YES, is it thrilling and exciting to watch , no doubt. The pilots know the risks, the spectators understand the risks. These people are following a passion, simple as that. RIP Jimmy
The biggest tragedy is the death of the spectators and the pilot. May god be with them and their families in this time of grief.
Then second tragedy is the loss of an historic aircraft.
The third tragedy is that the FAA will take this opportunity to increase their stranglehold on aviation by adding more redundant and confusing regulation to the F.A.R.
Aviation is one of the safest sports and forms of transportation known to man. Everyday, there are more car related fatalities than aviaiton related fatalities. With your reasoning, should car travel or car races "be forbidden?" How about making anything where there is a risk of injury or death from participating or observing is "forbidden?"
If you dont like the air races, dont attend. Nothing is 100% safe in this world.
@iiijg26 You claim that Aviation is much safer than Cars, but the Ratio of People Using car transport to air transport is totally off balance . it would be like a 100-1 Just a pure bullshit estimate, But everybody else here knows what Im saying, the amount of people who drive cars Compared to Pilots or People using General Passenger Planes.
@dpier10 look at the amount of fatalities in air racing as compared to nascar, indy, or most other high powered motor sports. air racing IS more safe on that basis.
@dpier10 oh it is safer... look at the annual eaa fly-in in oshkosh wisconsin.. over 10,000 aircraft attend and how many crash a year? oh maybe 10 at the most on their way or on their way home. now how many out of 10,000 cars would crash in a week? you tell me
@dpier10 Aviation is inherently dangerous, that is why it is filled with redundant safty precoutions, comunication, and training. that is why all aviation has such an impressive safty record- if they let everyday idiots like some here fly it would be aplorable! Aviators and air crews make flight safe, if you think air raceing is to risky then fuck off land lover, we will tame the skys for you!! you sit inside your sterill buble dont get hurt OK!
@iiijg26 Those are the airliners with the great safety record. General aviation aircraft have a shocking record. That said these pilots knew the risks and did everything they could before hand to limit that. Let's just hope that the lessons paid for with their blood was heeded.
@iiijg26 Fallacy in your argument: Far more people drive everyday than their are flyers in civil and commercial aviation around the world. Still aviation is incredibly safe when you look at transportation statistics.

air races like reno are pure bullshit. Remember a little town in germany called ramstein, where in the late eighties nearly 90 men, women an children died. Pimped warbirds in a highspeed run have to lead to an tragedy like in reno.
I was there last year. It is so great. I even got free pit passes to go and talk to the pilots. My uncle had raced there years ago. Most of the pilots are very old now. There are some younger pilots too. They are all very talented. Many have years flying military and commercial aircraft. I really enjoy it all and is a must see for everyone no matter how old or young you may be.

@19thSFGA the crash had nothing to do with the pilots' age. it was a structural failure, if he'd been 25 he would have faired no better.

@19thSFGA 74 year old pilots may not be cool, but they sure as hell are good pilots with a lot more experience than most.

The next will be forbidding the horseride because they are byting and kicking persons.
But, seriously, I would be for a total ban of the cars from the road. They kills definitely much than every arabian dictator in a year.
