I had a cheaper model, and it would detect random cables/pipes/studs without even moving it. I (wrongly) assumed that a more expensive model would be more reliable.
As my house has random cable/pipework all over the walls, I still have the dilema of not being able to confidently drill holes without worrying about what is behind the wall.
I have heard good things about the wall scanners but they are much more expensive. Someone must make something at a reasonable price for detecting pipes and cables!
OMG ! I have been checking round to buy one of those and i wanted to see some reviews and i got in here to this Video,,,,Im shocked and disappointed,I used to trust Bosch but after this Video i really have to be careful,,those instruments cost quite a lot and they were made for life as in the commercials ...Thanx for the video,, it is really useful.
Yes, this tool is really disappointing and lets Bosch down. I have been a fan of Bosch tools for 20 years and the rest of the tools they make seem to be good quality but this completely lets them down. I have read a few reviews of these detectors on websites and only the people selling them seem to think they are any good, but people that have tried them can never seem to get decent results with them! Thanks for the comment ;-)
Thanks for the review. Sometimes, it's hard to know whether or not to trust someone's opinion (as on the forums) but, with video evidence, there's no doubt; you've just saved me £50 so, thanks! :-D
Have you tried Bosch's GMS 120 model? Can't find any reviews or user comments of it. Perhaps they'd send you one to try if you directed them towards this video... ;-)
I have to say that I was disappointed with the Bosch DMF10, it looked so good in the promotional video. I have not tried the GMS 120, but I would hope that it would be better than this model!
Well then your device seems to be broken, because mine works perfectly as shown in the Bosch Video.. and to be honest.. i have no association with Bosch of any sort.. except, i have some tools from them..
...
the DMF10 seems to have some intelligence in the device, which requires more passes over the area of interest as other tools.. also the static electricity could cause false readings in the start, but once you put your hand on the wall above the Unit, it works very excact..
And does it tell you in the instructions to place your other hand on the wall above the unit? Mine certainly does not! I have tried it several times in the house and it did not work, then I read a lot of posts in forums saying that they were a waste of time, so I went to the trouble of constructing a set up, so that I could test it and it was given every chance to work- but didn't. You must be the only person I know that has one that works!
Sorry, but the video is misleading in some respect, as you not show how to use the device properly as stated in the operators manual.
Not sure, what happened to the device in the Video, because I have the Unit now for 6month and i'm completly happy with it.
In the attached video from Bosch, it is clearly shown how the Unit is operated properly. Make sure, you watch this video - so you can make and educated decision.
I read the manual before using it. I also calibrated it before use- as stated in the manual.
So the video is NOT misleading. I love Bosch tools, but this tool should never of been sold. Have a look around the forums on the internet and you will see hundreds of unhappy people that have purchased this item. The only people that think it is ok are the people that are selling it and making money from it!
I was introduced to this product but decided to check up on the reviews before I buy. I think there's another model that does the same thing - Bosch PDO Multi DIY Digital Detector. Having watched this, I am uncomfortable about their expertise on wallscanner detector now. You could return it to Bosch and see what they have to say. Maybe it's faulty. Pls suggest another model/brand that really works. If not, what are the alternatives in detecting live wire, wood and water pipe?
I do not know anybody that has one of these types of detectors that works and is 100% reliable. For detecting wood you can find the screw heads in the studs with a magnet, I have done a video on this! The wall scanner should pick up a metal water pipe, but for electric cables you have to be careful and make sure you do not drill above or below any electrical accessory boxes.
How can Bosch get away with selling something that so obviously doesn't work?! I got mine today for detecting studs and it detects them continuously, then suddenly it says nothings there, then a minute later the whole wall is electrified... it cant even make its mind up. No point selling it on eBay as no doubt it will be returned as faulty!
A few people in my forum said that they could not locate studs with one, so to be fair to Bosch I rigged up the small stud partition and it couldn't locate a stud through 9.5mm plasterboard!
Bosch sucks

Thankyou for going to the trouble of setting up a test for this tool and showing how useless it is. I was about to waste £70 on one of these.

@arcadeuk
You are welcome.
You are much better off using a decent magnet to locate the studs.
