  • Tomoko deeess!x9001

  • Akemashite omedetō gozaimasu, Victor and Tomoko!!! Blessings

  • Hi Victor! Hope you're having a happy New Year. :D I took a sushi making class awhile ago and the woman who taught it was Japanese and she asked if I knew any and I said, "Akemashite omedetō gozaimasu!" and she looked startled and pleased and said I did very well, but if she were saying it to someone older, she would have bowed when she said gozaimasu. So, if I ever have that opportunity again, I will try.

  • @minjonetminna

Good story! And great to hear from you!

  • あけましておめでとうございます!今年もよろしくお願いします♪

  • @nanairomiso

Happy new year, please be kind to me this year too ^^

  • Happy New Year Victor! (from Sydney!!)

  • 新年明けましておめでとう!今年も宜しくお願いします!

  • Oh no I just wrote a message to someone from Fukushima that said あけましておめでとう! because I didn't know about this >_<

Should I apologize to them or what?

  • 喪中はがき?初めて聞いた!勉強になりました。ありがとうございます。

  • Happy New Year, Big V :D

  • "Akemashite omedeto gozaimasu" to both of you and thanks for the useful information. I'm glad I just found your channel on YouTube and am sure it'll help me in growing more related to Japan and the japanese people.

  • I hope you are okay, Man. I just read about an earthquake hitting japan.

  • A very interesting custom! Thanks for sharing!

  • Happy New Years (Akemashite omedetō gozaimasu)

    Victor and Tomoko

  • I thought I read "JEWS!"

  • @Greenwithevil your not alone DX

  • CHUCK NORRIS IS A HUNTA!!

  • Happy New Year Tomoko and Victor! Have a great 2012! :D

  • Thank you for the insight! Instead of Akemashite omedetoo, I wished Ii toshi ni naru yoo ni! I hope it's more correct, and makes me sound like an expert :)

  • Happy new year :) glad i discovered you guys, gonna be seeing lots more of you next year too ^_^ best wishes!

  • Happy New Year Victor and Tomoko, have a happy and peaceful 2012.

  • Call me stupid, but what is akemashite derived from? When I try to look it up, none of the words seem to suit the context here and/or I can't seem to find it at all.

  • Thank you for the video, hope you both have a happy safe New Year.

  • Thanks for informing the news in Japan. Wish you two happier, healthier, and richer. :) 明けましておめでとございます!

  • Hallmark Japan should introduce a "Hope Next Year Is Better Than This Year Was" card. Must be damn embarrassing to forget who lost a loved one and wish them a happy new year.

  • 明けましておめでとございます!

    Happy freakin' New Year, Victor!

  • 明けましておめでとうございます!

  • Happy New Year, you two! :)

  • Is it just for those who have had people die within the year, or just around New Years/late in the year?

  • @PLURRtasticKandiKid

Within the year. So even if you lost a family member in January of 2011, it counted.

  • トモコでええぇす

  • Happy New Year Tomoko and Victor! Hope its FANTASTIC!! :D (And everytime I hear or read the name Tomoko, I hear 'Tomoko desu"... I've been ruined lol.)

  • Happy New Year guys : )

  • This is what I really like about the Japanese culture. They are very considerate with the ppl around them. They really have empathy for their neighbor.

  • 明けおめ! as the younger crowd is saying.

  • mr kazo sent you.......hey you lip my stockings lol.

  • Thank you for 2011, Victor and Tomoko.

  • 良いお年を!

  • my grandfather died this year.

I didn't know him well but I feel I would like to partake in this Japanese tradition. it seems a very good way to pay respect.

  • SHE IS SO CUTE!!

  • Akemashite omedetō gozaimasu! :) Yea it's been years n years now but I remember loosing a family member on a Christmas eve and crying so hard at opening presents from them. Can understand that sometimes the last thing u want is something saying everything is fab and great for new year when u really don't feel it at all. My heart goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one this year. XxxX.

  • feliz navidad y prospero año nuevo.

  • youtube doesnt have a LICK button sorry, I did Like the video though lol.

  • I think I'd be more inclined to send a "Happy New Year" card/letter/etc. if someone did have a death in the family that year.

  • happy New year ~ lol I'm just going to party like usual.

  • Hmm, that's a strange concept - to me at least. I'd think you'd want to have stuff happening around you to distract you from those emotions...Interesting nonetheless, gotta add this to my ever growing list of do's/don'ts lol

  • Hey happy new year Tomoko and the Moron King!

I find that kinda bad, considering that wishing a happy new year is wishing things to get better, giving positivity to people who indeed lost someone or had a bad year.

  • Happy Holidays Victor & Tomoko!

  • @ericsurf6

Hey, Erik! I still can't do that 1-8 puzzle! I'm not gonna look at the answer until I can do it.

  • this is great always learning something new thanks Victor.

  • 明けましておめでとうございます or あけおめ or 新年おめでとうございます or whatever is appropriate to say after midnight has past and its the new year but if you are wishing someone a new year while its still 2011 the better thing to say is 良いお年を(お迎えください). I'm sure you know this already but some foreigners are not aware of the distinction so figured it'd be worth pointing out :-).

  • reading an article today about all the web services like Yahoo and Mixi that will mail a card for you from your "friends" list in Japan. And they were advising alternate messages other than akemashite omedetou gozaimasu, in deference to the tragic events of 2011. In tomorrow's vid, can you mention some good alternatives to Happy New Year? Thanks!

  • My condolences to those who had a member pass away and a Happy new Year to all and wish that you all have a much better 2012 :D

  • hmmm if you play with the pitch settings on your computer and put it on -4...you can make tomoko sound like a man...who talks like a girl. Sadly it doesnt work the other way around if you put it on +4

  • I licked the video.

  • Happy 2012 to you and Tomoko! Hope to see more of these vids in the new year!!!

  • Bleck! My screen doesn't taste very good! Happy New Year Tomoko-san, Victor-san! 明けましておめでとうございます!

  • I like how she imitates your hand jestures at the end.

  • Tomoko-san, you get cuter and cuter every year! 明けましておめでとうございます。

    Victor, happy new year too.

Have a good year, and a good health (that's what we say in my country, which is Belgium).

  • That's interesting...so would it be offensive to send someone a card in the event that you forget they're not celebrating this year?

  • @meaphe

As a gaijin all will be forgiven... but you should do your best to remember that stuff. Yoko puts those cards 喪中はがきaside so we don't forget. This year we didn't send 2 people cards.

  • I never know that, thanks for the heads up.

  • But what happens if you do send a card to someone who has a family member that has died? or wish them happy new years?

  • @Degenskonto

If you didn't know, it's forgiven. If you did and you knew, you'll be considered inconsiderate. (And you'll be beheaded.j/k)

  • Happy New Year my friend!

  • Akemashite omedetō gozaimasu!

  • Have a happy new year Tomoko and Victor! Looking forward to seeing what things will be brought up in the new year on your channels.

  • i hope you both have a great new year :)

  • tomokodes is like a living emoticon haha that's cute. sorry if i misspelled her name

  • 明けましておめでとうございます! ^.^)v

  • Notice the mistake at 3:04 'youtub.com'

  • @Danoftouni

DAMN! I never pay attention to the English. I always concentrate on the Japanese. But I blame the jetlag. Now in New York City.

  • @Danoftouni - or is it a mistake? #conspiracykeanu
