This was the first swimming event I ever watched as we got a TV right before it, I remember watching this race and thinking "holy crap, that's incredible". One of the most amazing swims I've ever seen, and it just gets more and more epic as the record gets older and older. Does anyone have the full video from above the water by any chance?
In my view, this is the single greatest feat by a human being in the arena of aquatic sport. This is testified by the fact that the record has stood for virtually a decade, whilst every other swimming world record has been broken. This swim alone puts Hackett firmly amongst the pantheon of the planet's all-time elite athletes.
@seismicevent How about Mary Meagher WR in women's 100m butterfly which stands for about 2 decades until being broken by Jeanny Thompson ? And her 200m butterfly WR which also holds for nearly 2 decades until Susie O Neill broke it ?
@lexsoft I think this particular record stands above all others is because it remained unbroken during the 'suit era'; a period when every other swimming world record was broken, often multiple times. There are of course other swims / records
@lexsoft For me, this particular record is unique because it remained (and remains) unbroken during the 'suit era'; a time when every other swimming world record was broken - often multiple times. It will be interesting to see how long this record remains.
jrbc8 generally, they swim since they are 5 yo, they have a speedsuit, they swim in a 50m pool (you lose time in a 25m pool...) genetics has something to do in those performances, they only train, eat well & enough (nutriments too) and they relax + sleep in the afternoons + they receive massages frequenly, etc...
omg... i was lookin a reference in speed cos i swim 3km in one hour but ooomg haha im like stupi watching this world record.. i mean hes like 5.5 km/hr!!!! thats twice fast than me... omg... human been is just incredible!
he does that only at the middle of each 50 to save his legs prolly. When he pushes off the the wall he's kickin to gain speed. (it's the same thing when he's goin to the wall) That's what i think :)
My guess is he's trying to retain energy for the crazy ass long race, I usually don't kick too hard when I do distance stuff, just enough to keep my balanced and flat on the water, but I'm a sprinter ^^ I hate distance lol
His high elbow is amazing! Seems australians are quite impressive with this tecnique...

he starts with 3+3 off the wall then switches to 3+1 then interpolates a few 3+3 again when approaching the wall

it's to conserve energy, the last 100-200m people usually start really kicking.
