@FerretLolly actually there where no fiddles in first century Rome , on top of that he wasn't even in the city when this fire was started. And after he returned to Rome Nero personally helped dig people out of the ruble with his own hands and then opened his palace to now homeless Romans. Talk about not doing anything ... read a fucking book dude like the histories of Tacitus...... you know somebody who was alive then

Not in the mediaeval sense (although the word 'castle' comes from the Latin 'castellum'). The Romans were, however, quite reliant on forts. These were made largely of wood with a ditch dug around them and could be constructed by an army in a day. Each soldier carried his own tools for building his part of the fort. You may be interested in reading up on the fortifications at the siege of Alesia.

Anyway, the whole 'Nero fiddled while Rome burned' is a myth (except for the part where Rome burned).

@FerretLolly I was just watching a documentary about Nero not long ago and that is what they said. Also Suetonius and Plutarch mention Nero's horrified reaction to the fire. Also Seneca mentions how it was his determination to fix it that lead him to bankrupt Rome.
