Where do you get the figures of 1 million and 10 million? The popularity of tennis has gone up in some countries, gone down in others, and stayed the same elsewhere. In any case, the 80s is considered one of the most competitive eras ever.
Anyway, the real reason why Rios never won even one Slam was because he was inconsistent. Although he was very gifted and could beat anyone when playing at his best, he was hindered by mentally fragility and a lack of dedication to the game.
And you clearly havent watched any of McEnroes matches if you think hes boring. He was one of the most artistic players in the games history. His one-of-a-kind touch and feel allowed him to hit volleys that no one else before or after him has emulated.
They are both talented. Mcenroe had the best touch and volley. Considered prodgidy whgen he reached wimbledon semifinals first time playing. Mcenroe talented. Rios wasted talent.

Rios used to be a very good tennis player, he was ATP No1 in the world and he never won a Slam. Also, for your information he used to go party all night and then fuck retarded idiots like you who ask stupid questions.
This is correct. He was a very talented but flakey underacheiver. Mentally he was very weak, as many of his coaches admitted. He tanked and collapsed in many matches. As a result, he an "almost great". His whole career is a tragedy in that sense. But it's true, compared to the true greats, like Mcenroe, Rios is a total nobody.
Safin ..(who by many tennis Pro believes should of won more slams) even say's Marcelo Rios is a Huge under-achiever. Safin to his credit though metally un-stable won 2 slams..where Rios in 50 years time will be forgotten.
Yep. Safin didn't even come close to living up to his talent, he squandered all those chances but he will at least be able to point to the 2 times he did come through. While Rios will simply be trivial footnote in history, and he will have nobody but himself ot blame. He had the feet and hands of a great but not the head of a champion.

Hey man, this is clear, The best Rios would've beaten the best McEnroe. The thing is that in that time when McEnroe played there weren't many good players who could beat him, therefore he would win any kind of tournament. On the other hand when Rios played, there were too many good players so the competition was harder. At Mcenroe's time only Connors, Borg and McEnroe himself used to win everything, there was no competition, so that's it, the facts are clear.
That is utter and complete BS. Back in McEnroe's time, you had no idea who was going to win because of the depth in the game. Both were about equal in the talent level, but who had more tournament wins and/or grand slams in the end?
What a load of utter nonsense. McEnroe played in the time of Borg, Becker, Connors, Lendl and Wilander, all of whom won multiple Grand Slams. You clearly know very little about tennis.
If you say something like "the facts are clear" you need to supply some. Rios actually played in a time when the competition was less strong. There was Sampras and Agassi, who took two years off the game when Rios was at his peak, and that's about it. Rios was a stroppy choker not fit to be mentioned in the same breath as McEnroe, or indeed Borg, Connors, Becker, Wilander, Agassi or Lendl.
Rios doesn't normally make grunts when he hits the ball. I'm pretty surprised he's doing it everytime he hits the ball in this match. I think he's trying to make a mockery out of Mc Enroe by making grunts to sound as if he's has to "work hard" to play MC Enroe. We all know Mc Enroe, considering his age, is not in the same league as Rios.
you kow nothig about tennis is you actually think that. Mcenroe at his best would DESTRYO rios on any surface. THeir records can't even compare. 19 majors, 77 singles titles,78 doubles titles and over 200 wks at # 1. Rios was #1 for what 3 wks and didn't even play a grand slam final. Get a clue MCENROE OWNS!!!
Your facts are totally wrong. Mcenroe spent 170 weeks at No.1. He won 7 grand slams in total. Doubles grand slams don't count for shit, otherwise Todd Woodbridge would have been the greatest player ever.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you're an absolute moron if you think doubles grand slam titels don't count. That's what makes a player a complete champion. Being able to win on All surfaces and All types of play. Doubles, mixed and singles. So yes he won 19 majors. As for Todd Wooddrige, he only won 78 doubles titles and something like 5 singles. No where near being the greatest player ever. THat's just a stupid argument.
Do you know Leander Paes, or Mahesh Buphati? Those guys almost won all four doubles grand slams in the same year, yet nobody even cares. And if you coult doubles slams, Mcenroe only won 10 doubles and 7 slams. 10+7=17 you moron.
No-one apart from you counts doubles slams when working out who the greatest players are. Doubles is a minor sideshow. Period. If being able to win on all surfaces is so important then Agassi is the best ever as the only man to win Slams on three different surfaces. I'd go for Federer myself and he's never won the French, and he certainly doesn't play doubles.
There couldn't be any question about this from people who actually know tennis. It's a silly premise. Rios is a very talented, "could have been great" player....kind of like an Henri Leconte. Mcenroe is a multiple slam champion. And OF COURSE he's beating up on Mcenroe, he's SEVENTEEN YEARS younger. In pro tennis terms, that's about 3 full generations BETWEEN them! It's an amazing tribute to Mcenroe that he can even play with him!
It's just shows that a guy who was the most hated player on the tour hasn't changed his lousy attitude at all. Mocking a multiple slam champion who's SEVENTEEN years older, when you never even won one is not cool.
Rios made an Australian open final but he then choked it away. He can beat Mcenroe on the seniors tour with his HUGE age advantage but at the end of the day he isn't fit to carry Mcenroe's shoes and the record proves it.

McEnroe is a legend. Rios who is?
Pitonto 3 years ago
Rios used to be a very good tennis player, he was ATP No1 in the world and he never won a Slam. Also, for your information he used to go party all night and then fuck retarded idiots like you who ask stupid questions.
ausrico 3 years ago 3
This is correct. He was a very talented but flakey underacheiver. Mentally he was very weak, as many of his coaches admitted. He tanked and collapsed in many matches. As a result, he an "almost great". His whole career is a tragedy in that sense. But it's true, compared to the true greats, like Mcenroe, Rios is a total nobody.
datacipher 3 years ago
Safin ..(who by many tennis Pro believes should of won more slams) even say's Marcelo Rios is a Huge under-achiever. Safin to his credit though metally un-stable won 2 slams..where Rios in 50 years time will be forgotten.
robinho1979 3 years ago

At Mcenroe's time only Connors, Borg and McEnroe himself used to win everything, there was no competition, so that's it, the facts are clear.
azhazel1 3 years ago
That is utter and complete BS. Back in McEnroe's time, you had no idea who was going to win because of the depth in the game. Both were about equal in the talent level, but who had more tournament wins and/or grand slams in the end?
JonnySV 3 years ago 2
What a load of utter nonsense. McEnroe played in the time of Borg, Becker, Connors, Lendl and Wilander, all of whom won multiple Grand Slams. You clearly know very little about tennis.
freeece1 3 years ago

We all know Mc Enroe, considering his age, is not in the same league as Rios.
garytotti 3 years ago
Rios has never seen Mcenroe's league. Rios can't compare to Mcenroe, regardless of his age.

the best rios vs the best mcenroe
rios win
massorkw 3 years ago
you kow nothig about tennis is you actually think that. Mcenroe at his best would DESTRYO rios on any surface. THeir records can't even compare. 19 majors, 77 singles titles,78 doubles titles and over 200 wks at # 1. Rios was #1 for what 3 wks and didn't even play a grand slam final. Get a clue MCENROE OWNS!!!
tommie66tx 3 years ago
Your facts are totally wrong. Mcenroe spent 170 weeks at No.1. He won 7 grand slams in total. Doubles grand slams don't count for shit, otherwise Todd Woodbridge would have been the greatest player ever.

you're an absolute moron if you think doubles grand slam titels don't count. That's what makes a player a complete champion. Being able to win on All surfaces and All types of play. Doubles, mixed and singles. So yes he won 19 majors. As for Todd Wooddrige, he only won 78 doubles titles and something like 5 singles. No where near being the greatest player ever. THat's just a stupid argument.
tommie66tx 3 years ago
Do you know Leander Paes, or Mahesh Buphati? Those guys almost won all four doubles grand slams in the same year, yet nobody even cares. And if you coult doubles slams, Mcenroe only won 10 doubles and 7 slams. 10+7=17 you moron.
Aodaliyah 3 years ago 3
No-one apart from you counts doubles slams when working out who the greatest players are. Doubles is a minor sideshow. Period. If being able to win on all surfaces is so important then Agassi is the best ever as the only man to win Slams on three different surfaces. I'd go for Federer myself and he's never won the French, and he certainly doesn't play doubles.
freeece1 3 years ago
There couldn't be any question about this from people who actually know tennis. It's a silly premise. Rios is a very talented, "could have been great" player....kind of like an Henri Leconte. Mcenroe is a multiple slam champion. And OF COURSE he's beating up on Mcenroe, he's SEVENTEEN YEARS younger. In pro tennis terms, that's about 3 full generations BETWEEN them! It's an amazing tribute to Mcenroe that he can even play with him!
datacipher 3 years ago
RoseEdw 3 years ago
It's just shows that a guy who was the most hated player on the tour hasn't changed his lousy attitude at all. Mocking a multiple slam champion who's SEVENTEEN years older, when you never even won one is not cool.

Rios made an Australian open final but he then choked it away. He can beat Mcenroe on the seniors tour with his HUGE age advantage but at the end of the day he isn't fit to carry Mcenroe's shoes and the record proves it.
