That`s one of the reasons I like repairing my car more than I like repairing my bike. You need a special tool for everything. Either you need a special bike shop or you need to be Batman. "I`ll just take my special crank puller I allways carry with me."
@joeyc5446 i used my wrench and some WD it took a while its very tricky but it is worth it rather than i tool like that ... also depends on your bike study it before its always different
@BallerSkier Same with me, I'm having the same problem right now also, I removed the crank bolt, but my crank arm is literally stuck to the Bottom bracket spindle & I am unable to remove my crank arm (Drive side), I wonder if this crank puller will actually work if i buy it. ):
@1ShyAzn i tokk thewm of easy remove the bolts half way and go and pedal like there is no tomorow push hard on the hardest speed and the crank arms will fall off, when u put them back put some grase so they come off easy
why would these fuck heads make so need a crank puller jus so u have to be another useless specialty tool. what a pain in the ASS! ima go back toriding a bmx
If a crank nut like the 14mm one in the video is really stubborn, I recommend that you use the crank arm as leverage by putting both the wrench and arm in one hand, and squeezing them together to loosen the nut. This also goes for the pedals.
I just recommend this, so other people don't have to spend four hours waiting to get their knuckles stitched...
Guys, the pullers are only like $5 at your LBS. Not to mention, the pure satisfaction from pulling the crank off of the tiny bottom bracket is just undescribable, but it's worth more than $5. :)
@ilikecoco Sometimes they are wedged in instead of threaded. At least that is the case for the plastic covers on my unicycle's cranks. I've used a flat head screwdriver to pry them off.
@mrwrestler its not based on sized but rather the style of spindle you have from your bottom bracket. many bike shops sell "universal" crank pullers so it's just a circle sligltly smaller then the squared spindle, and the splined spindle, so it's just right. they are worth it btw:D
@trimmytrab Depends on what kind of bottom bracket you have. If it is a more current bb it might be splined or an external bb which would require different tools. If it is a square taper bb like the one in the video, then yes, same principle.
@thebiketube Yep looks pretty much the same,BB is only a couple of months old - just that a couple of minor repairs at my LBS have cost over £20 a time and it would be cheaper (and more satisfying) to actually do the job myself - thanks for advice.
You can, maybe with a hammer and a flathead. Then you'll end up with something looking like a horror film. Honestly, just go to your lbs and get a crank puller. Most shops will let you put a deposit and borrow one, mine just lent it to me! Take the time and do it right!
@Vista0009 yes mate but its a bit heath robinson you need a good solid bit of wood( not pine or you can use hi density plastic sheet) cut to a wedge shape then cut a v shape in to the wedged end make it thin enough to get between the frame and the crank and strike with a hammer. not as easy as this the proper way but saves you buying one off tools.
@Vista0009 Yes. You losen up the nut quite a bit and slowly bike with normal pressure but keep checking to see if the arm is loose otherwise it will drop and your pooched because cranks are bloody expensive!
My opinion is to always use the tool for the job, the puller is SOOO easy to use I wouldn't even spend money on replacing a crank when the job can be completed correctly.
Also a lot of bike shops will pull the cranks for you for a nominal fee.
@Vista0009 If the threads are smooshed, there is a thread chasing tool. It's an expensive tool but your local bike shop should have one, and should be able to take care of it.
If all the threads are totally stripped, you'll probably have to use brute force and some heavy duty tools. BEWARE, the brute force method usually results in one or more of the following: destroyed crank, damaged bottom bracket, damaged bike frame, ringing ears, lots of swearing, and blood.
@Vista0009 I've done it before, but i'm pretty sure the only time that is possible is with a newer bike, where the crank connecting point isn't fused onto the main shaft itself from all the years of that constant radial load.
Was wondering if there's a way to get them off without that puller, it's impossible to get any decent leverage on the crank itself. Would heat or penetrating fluid work for those ones that have never had the crank tooken off of them?
And lol you're not a pussy if you can't get those nuts loosened. Sometimes they're seized on there, or the stupid bolt cap will break while you're trying to take it off, so all the material from the cap is stuck in there and you can't get the socket over the bolt head deep enough.
i used 2 ride bmx and build my fit s2 from fram up,, i know every thing about bmx bikes cause their so simple. i went 2 fix my dads scott moutian bike thats ben sittin in the garage for like 10 years now, cause the bottom bracked used 2 click and make sounds, it was loose and it just needs bearing matinence and shit. im used to bmx cranks and dident know why the crank with the sprocket wouldent come off, lol, i thought it was rusted on.. fuckin crank puller is what i needdd/thanks :)
Thankyou for this video, very informative. I have been trying to pull, hit, yank off my crank for ages! if only i had known that you need this bloody tool. lol
Hey guys, anyone got any good tips for removing the bolt if it is very used and the socket just slides? I just wanna get it off doesnt matter if it gets broke. Great video by the way was very helpfull!
My crank is so tight we tried a wrentch, extending the handle with a spanner blah blah blah all the obvious things, but it just wont budge.. any ideas?? (the crank is wobbly but it won't come off :/
Thnaks man, i just removed my first crank, a Campagnolo chorus, had tools for years but never knew how to do it until i saw ur video, Happy St Paddys day from Ireland!
alright soo i dont have a arm remover piece that he is talking about and probly need to invest in one but my friend has one that you just screw into the crank and then hit it when a hammer and the arm comes off...but it doesnt screw into my spindle because the part is to big so what can i use instead??
No offense, but it is much safer to insert the crank-puller with a wrench after hand-tight so as to have a much stronger grip on the crank arm. Doing it as shown here can result in pulled-out threads in the crank arm. I do, however, see that this was a very loose-fitting or worn square-taper spindle.
