  • The beginning of the Lombardo "Sweetest Music This Side Of Heaven" style.

  • Can't understand you guys think Carmen was a good singer. Kenny gardner was given the job to sing. Carmen played in the band. Winchester Cathedral, a hit in the 60s, shamelessly stole the song "Coquette." If you listen to Cathedral, you will notice it is very similar to Coquette.

  • @BornToLate I don't think it's a matter of who's the better singer. Carmen was THE ORIGINAL vocalist with the Lombardo orchestra and Carmen's voice set the style of many other vocalists in the 1920s and 1930s. Certainly Gardner was an excellent vocalist, but he didn't join the Canadians until 1940. I think by then, Carmen was quite content to let Kenny do most of the vocals.

  • This has got to be My very favorit version of this song! As well as one of Guy Lambardow`s Best ever.

  • @roybo1930 I agree. This first version of Coquette is better than any other they did later on.

  • @bsgs98 I have heard the later version, and it can`t even come close to this!!! Much more of the sound I love in this version indeed!

  • Kenny Gardner made the best recording of this. Kenny was married to Lombardo's daughter, but was not with the band at this time. Carmen did most of the vocals and although a great musician and composer only barely adequate singer. I do not believe this is carmen. Do not know who it is?

  • @BornToLate Carmen was the composer of "Coquette". He is the vocalist as well.

  • @BornToLate It is indead Carmen and to be correct Kenny was married to Guy's sister

  • I'm certain now that you are correct on this. As you said, Guy recorded his hits many times over the years, so we'll probably never know exactually when the later one was recorded...but I'll need to take it down...but..... the better one will still be up....and I really love it !!

  • Thanks for posting this. I had posted a different version, but after hearing yours, I'm thinking that mine was not really recorded in 1928, but later. Anyway, I much prefer yours. Being a fan of the 1925-35 era, the smoother one just doesn't quite fit with me.

  • I just watched your video and I think your version is from the 1940s or 1950s. I think it's Kenny Gardner doing the vocal. Lombardo did augment his band quite a bit in the later years, but his style remained true to his roots and he reissued the old favorites many times.

  • @bsgs98 Hello there bsgs, your version was from the first Capitol LP Recording Guy did with them, circa 1956.

  • @NoelGuyALfan Well, actually the 1956 version was probably based on the original 1928 recording.

  • Dear bsgs98...One thing this Band hardly ever did,was update many of their original arragements,in one of his books it was stated that "if the public wanted to hear it over and over thru the years the same way, then the Guy generously obliged lol" or words to that effect :-)

Thanks so much for your wonderful work !!

  • This always makes me think of my grandparents, they are long gone, but were avid fans of guy lombardo, super,ty,,,,

  • Lombardo's band remained very popular for over 50 yrs and their style never changed much over the years.
