Is this really that much better than an inverted diamond/SPUI? I really dont see ATL drivers really getting it...and what is the through flow on these intersections?
I really wish more cities would put these in. DC is a nightmare--either regular intersections with very few left turn lanes anywhere or else roundabouts, which are (except for the small ones) much more complicated than this (not that I ever imagine DC would bother getting these in...they can shutdown roads for weeks for movie shoots, political events, and construction on anything except said roads, but God forbid they'd do it to improve commutes).
I just think its retarded how society didn't go with this in the first place, just like how we decided to run ophone lines instead of cable lines, or use gasoline instead of electric in the first place... what a sad excuse for an intelligent race
Ya the first time you ever come up to one of these I think everybody has the same reaction "what the fuck", now I'm used to them and it kinda makes sense, especially if your are turning left onto I44 or James River Freeway.
We're getting these in Atlanta and I like it. The regular, sequenced way, of doing this isn't very efficient and I think most people will nix the new ideas mainly because, "Change is bad!" Get past that.
I also like the idea of round-abouts. They're common in the UK and, while most people would find them confusing, at first, over here, if you sit down and look at it it makes a lot of sense. The concept of right-of-way is simple too: Person in the round-about always has the right of way.
A terrible attempt at doing something different to get this place on the map. I think the overpasses they are building are a bigger deal than this mess.
I love ideas like this. We just started putting in round abouts in place of 4-way stops over here in my suburb of Atlanta. Now another county is looking at doing these diverging diamonds. It is amazing that simple little ideas like this can have such drastic positive impacts.
It's really EASY to get though, as long as you figure out if you want to turn LEFT, you obviously need to be in the LEFT lane. Less traffic backup during rush hour. Can't wait til they get the one on National & James River Freeway. You should see it around 6:45am & 5pm now, what a mess.
Wow, I had never seen any interchanges like this before. Did MDOT choose this intersection for the diverging diamond, since it had more traffic than other interchanges?
Thanks for posting this video, since I read about this interchange on another site, and was only today reading up on how this type of interchange works.
