who cares about the recording quality. The quality of the artist shines like a light. Doesn't matter if he's playing on an old school box!!. I'd rather listen to this recording than to any modern one.

very fast, very commercial. Personally Sylvia Marcovici is rock steady in her technique, for me, and much easier on the ear. Maybe she has a superior violin. It has a more luxorious tone.

Heifetz was known for his incredible sound. What I hear is just a mush. No offense, but is this really him? I don't want to insult anyone, please. Heifetz is the best but clearly not in this recording.
I think that Heifetz is the best, but not the best at this movement. It is a great sound, but the notes are all jumbled together! NO offence, people, his sound is CLEARLY the best. But Kogan's clarity makes his sound amazing. Try Heifetz's Paganini Caprice #24, or the Mendelssohn Concerto.
i'm with you; stern was the first recording of this for me, and by far still my favorite. i haven't heard kogan play this piece, but kogan's attention to each individual note should make for a classic performance

Err no, the best players ever are alive today. Listen to Leonidas Kavakos, Leila Josefowicz, James Ehnes. Heifetz was amazing because he Kogan, Oistrakh and Milstein were the first modern virtuosos.
Sorry, but this is by all means an unqualified statement, with all due respect to you and the mentioned violinists and many more-like Anne-Sophie Mutter...
You cannot put anyone beside Heifetz as far as pure ability is concerned-anything else is a matter of personal preference. Maybe Paganini would have to come up to push him off his well deserved throne-:)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Actually my statement is not unqualified, I'm a professional musician who gets paid to play this very music. Now I challenge you to listen to recordings of the people that I've mentioned and then listen to Jascha. The people playing today are faster, they have sweeter and more controled sounds, and a greater feel for the music.
@hyeinee Psyche! Kogan, Kremer, Perlman (on a good day), Kavakos, Mullova, Gluzman, Milstein, Hadelich... (the list goes on) all play or played as well as Heifetz or better.
Unusual, five-movement structure the Symphonie has for a de facto violin concerto-like showpiece. As "ideal" as Heifetz (always is), personally I prefer that dimension of soulfulness, apparent that David Oistrakh brought to his performances; e.g., the Lalo w/Martinon and the London Philharmonia Orchestra, 1954. In a mid-century modern sense, recordings from this era were experienced introspectively; without requiring, or themselves being a visual narrative.
the melody part is quite simple but the runs can be quite difficult...if you kno all positions on the violin...you can play this with a 6/10 difficulty...
Yes. When you say that about Heifetz, it's actually true. Except maybe for Paganini, but we don't have any recordings of him, so I'm all for the master, Heifetz.
Hmmm, I'd plump for Oistrakh, but Heifetz is definitely God-like. I mean it's not like I'll ever be able to achieive anything nearly as amazing, so there probably isn't any point in me trying to decide between them.
There is no choice here! The Lalo isn't Oistrach's piece at all. You should try Thibaud for the right style (not always technically spotless, but very personal and with real understanding for the Spanish spirit).
Years ago , his name was synonymous with perfection . You would be called the "Jasha Heifetz " of bubblegum bubble blowers . etc . I can't think of anyone else since that has acheived that level of respect.
has anyone noticed that this video has 51 ratings with all five of the stars shaded? That is something very rare to see on youtube, and is a testament to the quality of Heifetz's playing.
@ztefieh I allways likes to Lalo! Offcourse Heifetz too... This is my favorit. I lesten this sins i was 3! I also have Sibelius! Have nice life with music! Its almost what we need... and there is love!

"Mush"?, "Commercial"? What are you people thinking??
Heifetz is the best at this--by far. And for speed, nobody comes close. He's possessed!
I love how he plays the middle section. He's not soiling the G-string like so many do. He dances and seduces like a Don Juan--which he was.
Magical accompaniment by the great William Steinberg.
