  • there actually mateing i think?

  • the females are green or brownish...i have a male that goes from dark blue to almost a whitish blue and a female that turns green to brown...they are both pretty tho and area always chasing eachother

  • you shouldn't mix cichlids from different continents.

but it looks like u started with a community tank any way, each to his own but the fish are happier without be housed with other cichlids that they cannot communicate properly with

  • I think I have one of these, but he's got a lot more purple to him

  • How can you tell if they're male or female?

  • Well they both have egg spots on their bottom fin, although I recently learned that some fish have this on females, but I think for most fish that means they're male

  • Ok thanks.

  • I'm pretty sure it's a male because it has lots of egg spots and very long anal fins. (charactoristic of most male Cichlids)

  • no way

make shore you no what you are talking about b 4 u tell people stuff

egg spots is not at all a good way to pick male and female

it is true that males generally have more egg spots but it is not a shore fire way

what you can do to tell male and females apart in fish that have similar looking males and females is to look at the end of the dorsal, anal and ventral fins, on males these fins are generally exaggerated this is the best way to tell.

  • So your way of telling by males having "generally exaggerated" fins is better than my way of telling by males "generally having more egg spots". Ok General.

  • fins are a shore fire way to tell most African cichlids except for species that are monomorphic like blue dolphins for example, which really need to be vented to accurately sex them. in some species the sex of a fish can easily be suggested by many prominent egg spots on the anal fin, but this can vary with breed and individual fish, so it is not really a way to sex them at all, males generally have more egg spots than females but not always so its no good.

  • generally exaggerated means they are usually huge, but all males and many very juvenile males will already show a sharp dorsal and anal fin.i breed a lot of mbuna i no what i am talking about,

    cheers

  • @laksman108 WOW! YOU SIR RODE THE SHORT BUS!

  • females are a small dark brown and purple fish

  • I have one of these, it's very active.

  • Crazy how some get rapid growth spurts...I have one of those in my new tank, he's the dominant one, but hasn't really been challenged yet.
