I have only refurbished a couple of pipes with screw-on stems accompanied by stingers. I covered them with vaseline just to be sure it wouldn't eat away at it, causing a loose fit. Otherwise, I would simply use alcohol to clean the metal thoroughly.
So, basically, I don't know whether or not bleach would have negative effects on the metal because I didn't take that chance.
Yes you can. But be aware that those will probably leave a flavor ghost after you're done. There are those who enjoy this ghosting and favor its contribution to the smoke. I recommend experimenting with both grain and whiskey. I'd do a little more research with the cognac though...Or at least, experiment on a crappy pipe(s) first.
Great series. How do you know if you are reaming a bowl coating? How do you distinguish between a bowl pre-carbonization layer and the cake? Can you take the coating off too? Is it advisable to do so or not? Thanks. ps: You've used a lot of that Everclear young man...
I've heard of others diluting the bleach. Every time I've used undiluted bleach, it seems to have worked just fine. But, I suppose more caution should be exercised with undiluted bleach.

Unfortunately, I haven't refurbished any pipe stems made of bone. I'll send you a PM with a possible solution.

Any suggestions what will work well for acrylic stems? What about an amber stem?

@TampaPipeSmoker
I've found alcohol bath+lots of bristled pipe cleaners works really well for acrylic stems.
I'm not sure about amber stems...

How can I get Everclear? I don't think it is even sold in New York.

Can you use other alcohols than the grain one, say whiskey or cognac? Thanx for a great tutorial.

I found that if you just drink the Everclear, you will not care how nasty the pipe is. ;)

Greatly done instructional video, Danny. Do you use pure bleach or diluted in water?
Cheers

So far with all of my stems, I've used undiluted bleach.
