Taiwan is actually a newly adopted officially name(was used before 1949, but not as common as Formosa).

@ slimjbs1: Well considering your poor grammar and incorrect word usage, you must be from the mainland...therefore your comment's value is 0...lets take china's most "developed" city (which ironically is still undeveloped) and compare it to taiwan...we dont have to think about it and we will know that taiwanese streets are much cleaner...and still much more developed than what you would consider your "developed" garbage dumps (cities). Thank god i dont live in china.

@TheCentralasian That's because Taiwan's population is. Taiwan's official name is the Republic of China (RC, to be distinguished from the People's Republic of China--PRC, which is Mainland China). Some Chinese in the RC wants independence from the PRC but it doesn't make them any less Chinese in terms of culture and identity.
